Student Driver

Posted in Other at 3:21 pm by Leopoldo

I went out for an after lunch walk in the NW industrial area near my work today and saw something that made me laugh out loud: An 18-wheeler rig with a great big Student Driver sign on the back. The sign was as wide as the truck and almost as tall and I could not help but think that the size of the sign was in proportion to the danger posed by a potential error by the new driver.

What I (will do) Over my Summer Vacation by Leopoldo

Posted in Travels at 10:26 am by Leopoldo

I did not want to say anything until I was certain I would be making the trip, but now that I have tickets in hand (or rather in the mail) I guess it is time to let the cat out of the bag: On March 5th I will be flying to Bangkok and will stay in Thailand until March 17. From the 17th to March 23rd I will be in Tokyo.

The first question that I am asked when I tell people where I will be in March is ‘Why?’ and the best answer I can give is ‘because I have never been there before’. A more complete answer would say that my good friend Nick Zukin announced on PortlandFood.org that he had been gifted a trip to Bangkok and was up for some company. I thought about it and figured this was a great opportunity. I managed to get my work to release me from my contract a bit early (the original contract went until March 17), found out I had the frequent miles for the trip and enough savings to afford staying in Thailand for a couple of weeks. I was a bit sad to loose the miles I have been saving for 3 years now for a trip to New Zealand but I have also been eager to see Asia and figure I will still manage to get to New Zealand somehow.

I think that Nick is mostly interested in eating his way through the North of Thailand while I am more interested in scuba diving around the South, but we are both easy going enough that I am confident we will come up with a travel plan that works for both of us. While in Bangkok I have been recommended to stay at Shanti Lodge - Bangkok, which looks absolutely great to me. Where else to stay in Thailand will depend on when we travel and where we go to. I am not terribly worried about accommodations in Thailand since the US dollar translates very well to Thailand Bahts but I am hoping to get some contact in the country (travel tends to be a whole lot better when you know a local). I am however worried about the prices in Tokyo and hope I make a contact that can maybe host me while I am there. I figure Japanese couches are probably not meant for 6′3″ westerners but I would rather make do than pay $200 a night for a hotel.

I would love to get advice from anyone who has been to either country. Drop a comment or send me an email if you have any info or advice to share.
