I miss you Daria

Posted in Other at 7:11 pm by Leopoldo

On my drive into work on Thursday morning I tuned my radio to the local radio station KNRK to listen to Daria’s local entertainment guide only to find neither of Daria nor her co-host Gustav on the air. I checked in from time to time hoping to hear what might be going on, another of the jocks was spinning records and audibly upset. Later in the day I did something I hardly ever do, tuned to KNRK for the evening show hoping to catch some news. The reason I never turn to that station in the evenings is the evening jock, Marconi, is revolting. What I got was the idiotic, misogynistic Marconi bragging about how Daria and Gustav had just been fired and he had been given the morning spot. The news so upset me that I felt sick for the rest of the day.

There are two reasons why this had such an impact:
#1. I like Gustav and I love Daria. I am not big on commercial radio; the KNRK morning show was actually the only commercial radio station I would listen to. The rest of my listening time in the car or hanging out around the house goes to NPR or the local public classical station. Daria and Gustav are different though; they are amusing, lively, fun to listen to and most importantly really great people. Both G&D are people I could relate to, people who were not afraid to just be themselves, have some fun and enjoy a good laugh with others. Daria, in specific has an incredible charisma that is irresistible. If you live in Portland you probably know her. I first ran across Daria when channel flipping past the WB back when she used to do their weather reports. I don’t think I have EVER watched the Warner Brothers network, but I for a while I would click into it at the top of the hour just to see what new wackiness Daria was up to. It was clear that they had abandoned her in a studio without so much as a cameraman to read the day’s weather and rather than let that get her down she knew how to just roll with it and have fun. I still remember one evening when she was using Elvis dolls to represent cold and warm weather fronts… That night I stayed up checking in every half an hour to see what else she would have Elvis do. When I found her on the morning radio (once again just clicking through to on my way to another station) I was immediately hooked. I actually changed my commute time so I would be in the car at 7:10 when her daily entertainment guides would start. I do take solace in knowing that Daria has such overwhelming charisma and star quality that it will not take long before she is on the air again, in TV, radio, back on the stage or who knows what medium. Here is hoping that whatever her next venue is, it includes Portland.

#2: I hate Marconi… as in despise, loathe. I understand the commercial appeal of shock radio. Act like a brute on the air, get people upset, upset people talk about you and you end up making bank. This guy however is not only offensive he is utterly uninteresting. This asshole spends his time talking about screwing ‘bitches and hoes’ and generally being as base and loathsome as possible. Marconi shows no signs of having any respect for anyone, including himself, and especially not for women. I could go on but he honestly does not deserve the attention.

On Friday and again yesterday I was sad driving in and knowing that I will not have Gustav and Daria to keep me company in the mornings anymore. I wish I had some way of knowing how G&D are holding up. I read on Mystical Chicken’s web site that Gustav got the goodbye kiss on his Birthday. He deserves better than that, they both do. I guess all I can do is keep my ears peeled for Daria’s next appearance, and until then:

I miss you Daria!

I know I am not the only one that thinks KNRK put their head up their wazoo by replacing Daria and Gustav with Marconi:

I would be up on that list of people posting their outrage about Daria and Gustav’s departure, but for various reasons I didn’t put my feelings about it up on my Thingie…

I totally agree with you here… Daria and Gustav will be missed and I am hopeful that someone will realize the star qualities that Daria has and will pick her up…

As an added note, it really SUCKS that they axed Jayn (The longtime Late morning/early afternoon DJ), too… Jayn was one of THE best jocks that KNRK had with musical knowledge, intelligence and charisma… obviously, KNRK and Entercom don’t want intelligent people on the air…

    Sad.

  3. Zanny said,

It actually took me a while to get to like Jayn, but by the time she got canned, she was one of my favorites… in the weeks/months before she got fired, whenever Robin Banks was in for her (I’m not too fond of him…), I would be like “Dammit, I want to hear Jayn!” And yeah, I was thinking last night, I think G&D got the boot BECAUSE they were intelligent and witty and ACTUALLY FUNNY. Which seems ironic, I know, but … yeah.
Right now, however, you may know this already but I am boycotting the station, and a lot of other people are too.

You know, I thought about boycotting the station and eventually realized it does not make sense for me to boycott it since Gustav and Daria were the only thing I evern listened to that station for. When they got rid of G&D I effectively started a boycott. I do encourage everyone else to not only boycott KNRK but also let the station management know they are making bad decisions.

NRK??? What station is that? My radio no longer is able to stop on 94.7. I think someone, maybe myself, should purchase boycottnrk.com and continuously send email to the management with a link to the site.

I have never been this upset over losing a radio DJ.

Gustav, you are the man. Try to enjoy the time off. Spend some time with your many animals and your wife. You will be back on the air before you know it.

Daria, I love you. You an Gustav made the perfect pairing. Get together with Gustav and promote the hell out of yourselves. Any station with half a brain would grab the two of you up in an instant.

I am so upset about the stupid changes going on at NRK. They used to be my favorite radio station, mostly because of G&D. I’m definitly boycotting. Marconi is disgusting, and I could never listen to him. I hope G&D get another show going on some other station, just so they could show how they’d blow Marconi away in ratings.

Yeah, but you probably didn’t cry for five days straight… (I’m a girl, I have an excuse and hormones.)

Haven’t heard anything new lately about G&D except that Daria tried out for a morning show in Denver. Don’t know if she’ll get picked up by them or not though.

We’re mad about the change too:

One of the morning hosts in Denver announced he is going to retire, so that may signal Daria’s arrival. Don’t know for sure, but if it happens, people need to start requesting Streaming Audio.

Does anyone know what happened to Ashalen’s entry about this? It doesn’t seem to be there anymore… when I click on it I get “No items found” and there’s no link on the journal itself. Did she get rid of that entry, anyone know?

Good question… I just searched the site and indeed it seems to be gone.
Thank you Steve about the Daria update. It is odd to realize it but I really do care where she lands / that she lands in a good place. I feel like she gave me many good mornings and I should do something to give some back. Please if anyone else gets any more info post it here or let me know.

Hi, I just found this page after doing a google search for Gustav and Daria, trying to figure out what the heck happened! I can’t believe they were fired! Gustav has been employed by NRK since they first went on the air!

I first started listening to NRK when KUFO fired Bill Prescott and replaced him with Howard Stern. I wrote several angry letters to KUFO’s station management, and to this day I’m boycotting them. I was delighted when he joined NRK, and I loved the Prescott and Daria show. When Prescott moved on and Gustav moved up from the later time-slot to take his place, I continued to listen because I loved Daria so much!

And now I’m boycotting another radio station for its incredible lack of judgment and taste. Guess it’s just NPR from now on :(

I happened to fall across Daria on 105.1 this morning. I, too, have been mourning the Gustov and Daria show loss for weeks. I’ll give the 105.1 show a chance, but I’m a little afraid that it’s a little too Marconi-like and that Daria will be stuck playing second fiddle. I miss Gustov. I miss their stupid Shane Co. adds. Does anyone else think ALL the new DJ’s on KNRK suck? No need to boycott, there’s nothing there to listen to….

  19. Zanny said,

    November 11, 2003 at 5:05 pm

Daria is now billed on the Nelson and Terry show, so it’s now called “Nelson, Terry and Daria.” She really just needs to find her niche in a new station and they all need to get used to working together. I don’t see why people aren’t willing to give them a chance! Yeah, Nelson and Terry aren’t exactly my type of humor, but I think Daria will eventually get used to working with them and they will appreciate her comic genius and brilliant sarcasm, and stop interrupting her when she’s trying to speak. She can’t be funny if other people keep talking over her.

I’m going to keep listening. I may be only one person but I’m fiercely loyal to Daria.

Please, just give them a chance. That’s all I ask.

And Jayn’s gone too? What are they (Entercom, of course) thinking? That Marconi and his suckie army are going to be able to carry that station?

Ah, I was wondering why she was no on the air when I checked in on Monday. Does she have her own show now or is she sharing air time with another DJ? I did not think the mix with their morning DJs was working, here is hoping she finds a confortable spot.

I am a big G&D fan. I don’t work now, but when I did it was a big priority in my life to hear that morning show and no other every day. I usually turn off “talk”, but these two were just to amazing to ignore.

About Daria. If she for some reason is unable to achieve her dreams, whatever they may be, it is an indication of a disturbance in The Universe. She is intelligent but not boring. I love that she laughs at herself, but does not have to resort to typical “morning show” stupidity. Her sense of humor is brilliant; dry, educated and confident. But never does she come across pretentious. I used to actually laugh OUTLOUD in my car. And the interplay between her and Gustav, well, there is a chemistry there that is almost brother/sister with a touch of attraction, and Daria is so smooth, being such a “woman” while also mainting her “one of the guys” disposition. Her creativity and absolute force of charisma should and will be something that will not go unoticed.

I’m sorry to see you go Gustav. And to Daria, you are amazing and my hero. You are the full package-intelligent, fun, creative and gorgeous.

I’m coming to you live from Kentucky…where good radio is hard to find. Luckily, I work in an office that doesn’t mind (well, sorta, they do)that I listen to the radio over the internet. I discovered NRK when Bill Prescott and Daria were still doing the morning show. At that time, Gustav followed the morning show. I enjoyed listening to both shows - and NRK in general - because the playlist was rather eclectic (compared to here) and because I “liked” the personalities.

I was relieved when they gave the morning show to Gustav and Daria, and thought the show just got better. I would often email G or D, based on some comment or other they had made during the show, and nearly always got a cool reply - like the time Daria thanked me for sending her a website that had all the christmas special theme songs (Charlie Brown, Frosty, et al). Or the time I wrote Gustav saying they (NRK) made Portland sound like a great place to live, just for the music alone, to which he replied, “Yeah, it’s nice, but it rains. A lot.”

Anyway, my point is that I missed them a hell of a lot when NRK stopped streaming on the web - which I should have known was portentious of something bad. Until today, I had no idea (for sure) what had happened to them. What a sad end - corporate radio sucks.

I listen to WOXY in Ohio now…catch it while you can… =(

Man you all must be old. Marconi is AWESOME. He does have compasion for girls too. One of his friends in Seattle (he went there for 37 shows:( then came back :) )was stangled by her boyfriend now he’s tring to get a charity in her name to help familes of this type of thing. Sounds just like this quote from above right “This guy (Marconi) however is not only offensive he is utterly uninteresting. This asshole spends his time talking about screwing ‘bitches and hoes’ and generally being as base and loathsome as possible.” yes he is offensive sometimes but i haven’t heard his say anything worse than whats on 95.5 Now he makes fun of Inturd Crisco (inturn chris)and Razin (the new night DJ and, the person that was on Z100 with chet Pukanan before Chet become an ass) NRK has the best morning show because of Marconi. And it has the best music too. They just wanted to change their lineup and get a new type of listener (NOT YOU).

Razin Does the same things as
Jayn: Savy and always privy to the local music goings on. She once did a regular segment called “My Life Sucks” where she would listen, endlessly to listeners complain and request a song. She was clearly devoted.
Razin Has a request hour and listen’s to the listeners and talks to them as much as Jayn did. Listen to Razin at 6 to 10 in the nights his show is called the nighttime joint

I too would like to join the band wagon of those who are utterly disgusted with Marconi and the decision by the staff of 94.7 NRK to put him on the air. I never listen to him and after yesterday’s show, I know why. I just happened to turn the dial to 94.7 yesterday morning and heard Marconi playing the audio of the brutal murder of Nicholas Berg. During this audio, he stated “this is my favorite part” and then I heard the sound of Nicholas screaming and gurgling as he took his last breath. Not only did Marconi say this, he played the audio of this brutal murder along with the song “The Sickness” by Disturbed and compared the similarities while laughing.

I noticed today there is no Marconi show. Maybe 94.7 NRK will finally realize their mistake.

I hope those two never get another job in entertainment. I say that whoever gets enjoyment out of such stupidity should remove themselves from the gene pool as they only lag down the world’s intelligence. I unfortunately did not have a chance listen to D&G much, but I know that they were the only talent on that station. They both projected the true aura of the NW.

Kurt, your 100% correct! I listened to Daria and Gustav quite alot. They where great. I just dont know why KNRK would fire such beloved DJ’s and hire on those complete and utter MORONS, Marconi and Tiny. I was discusted with their humor as it was. This stupid stunt just afirms my opinion of the two idiots as I’m sure, many. WE WANT DARIA, GUSTAV AND JANE!!! Why doesnt NRK get it?

  33. Kurt said,

I see KNRK put up an apology for the actions of the Marconi show. A little too late I think, but better than nothing. I would like to ask all of you that read this board to send an email to, jhutchison@entercom.com, who is the General Manager of Entercom. Let him know how disappointed you are for them firing real talent, Gustav and Daria, and hiring fools. I think we could get them to change their minds going forward. Just a thought!

I was listening to 94.7 “FM” (no longer KNRK) this afternoon on my way home from work because lately I have caught them playing some good tunes that Gustav used to play. When the song ended and the DJ started to speak my ears perked up because the voice sounded so familiar. When he finally said “this is Gustav” I screamed with excitment! I called friends to share the news. I miss G&D but aside from their show, I missed Gustav’s personal record collection. Looks like the station is going back to it’s roots. About time. I had been an avid listener since 1994 when they started and haven’t listened to them since G&D were let go. Guess I’ll be back now… It’s a beautiful day!

Yeah, well I found this from doing a search. I acutally liked Marconi a lot. I liked him because he never took anything seriously. Mostly himself. I think it’s sick what he did though. I don’t know what he was thinkin. I’ve been listening to him since he was on at nights on NRK.

I really don’t like NRK now, but I still listen to it. It seems to have grown up a lot. All the music seems to be picked by Mark Hamilton, because a lot of it is English. I’m trying to give it a chance, but I really just don’t like it. I also am not diggin the 80s stuff like the cure, and the Killers. I want to hear the old stuff again. I want a lot of Nirvanna, I want new music. I want a lot of Linkin Park and Offspring. Gustave has turned into a robot, talking about the same stuff over and over again. The new DJ, Tara, is really annoying, she’s always talking about how she loves the Stone Temple Pilots guy and her sence of humor is really annoying.

Wow, people are still commenting on this? A year later? Yowza. Anyway, I have to say that I absolutely love the new 94.7, as I love 80’s new-wave and old-school punk music. I hadn’t listened for almost a year and I knew that Gustav was back because of the mass-email he sent to some people (including me), so a week ago I decided to check it out, and I’m addicted now. The only problem is, what the hell is up with that techno crap they play on Friday and Saturday nights (or if you wanna get technical, Saturday and Sunday morning)? I HATE techno.

Hey, I doubt anyone will run into this message but you guys had it wrong as far as I can remember. I used to work for Entercom back when the whole set of “format changes” started for 94.7 and 105.1. And although it was rumored that marconi would be on in the mornings I don’t think he ever got a chance before they kicked him off for making fun of the man being executed. so after he left Entercom needed to save face by changing things up so they fired ALL of their djs and only rehired a few (squid, gustav, etc..) then on 105.1 I think they briefly had daria on in the morning but she was such as strong personality that they put her on in the afternoons with skippy and dr. doug (plus daria skippy and dr. doug have never really gotten along well with nelson and terry). then dr. dough and skippy moved on to mornings on a different station and company leaving Daria by herself…then they got mitch to balance out her show and now it’s daria and mitch in the afternoons on 105.1. it was all very crazy and chaotic and i didn’t last there much longer either because I graduated college then and they didn’t want to pay me a full time living wage so I left. Entercom was a fun group of people but the company, like clear channel is a corporate whore that doesn’t value their employees much as far as job stability and pay goes.
