Zap Mama

I recently attended a concert at the Oregon Zoo with Les Nubians and Zap Mama. While the headlining group Les Nubians failed to inspire me, their opening act Zap Mama was a moving experience in rich vocals over Afro-Cuban rhythms. There was something enchanting and engaging about the energy with which the five female singers sang out to the audience and in turn brought the listeners into the music. Well executed synthesizers, samplers and scratching gave Zap Mama proper techno-backing without ever threatening to overpower the human element.

Maybe a little Afro-Cuban in there but that’s not their primary beat, in fact I rarely hear it in their music. Not that I could name what it IS, but something African. What country is the lead singer from?

Woops, did I say Afro-Cuban? I meant Afropean. Zap Mama is a french group with African roots.

    Hi,

today I heard a song in my gym that I really loved but didn’t know..the lyrics were “you prove it to me everytime”…I googled it up and came upon your blog :-) Thanks for the Dahlia info..BUT

quite a coincidence I noticed a post about ZAP MAMA

Zap Mama is NOT French, they’re a belgian (congolese) group which was headed by Marie Daulne and changed line-up often. Now it’s just her (Marie Daulne) and she’s just got a new album out.

    Cheers
