On Tuesday I went with my friend Sara to see Dahlia perform live at Ohm in downtown Portland. The show was incredibly good. Even though it was a late Tuesday night, it was obvious that the crowd was made up largely of regulars who knew their grooves and could follow along. The band was easily able to create energy and a mood that was deliciously contagious.

Vocalist Jennifer Folker can best be described as spunky. She carries a dramatic energy, which she projects out to the crowd. Her natural sensuality and foul mouthed “I am here to enjoy myself and if you can?t take a joke: fuck you” attitude team up with an amazing vocal ability that makes it hard to keep your eyes or ears off the stage. Perhaps more amazing is Keith Schreiner?s astounding ability to program up a sweet beat then play with it and shape it to his whimsy. Schreiner and Folker?s perfect synchronicity is evidence of either well-practiced artistry or musically induced telepathy. Either way the result is the same: a well-connected audience that is present and enjoying every musical nuance. I am still not sure what sound engineer Jay Bozich was doing in the back booth, but his incessant fiddling with scores of consoles evidentially added to the soundscape the three were painting onto the club.

If you are anywhere near Portland and enjoy quality electronic music I commend you to take the time and experience Dahlia at Ohm.
