Heading out to Manhattan

The workweek is over. I am very glad to be done with the trip. I believe we accomplished all we set out to do in our business trip. It was very helpful to meet the people I am working with on this project.

We saw Tara off to the airport this morning. Bob took off this afternoon, David and Rich should be leaving on the other terminal any time now. The jetBlue plane that will take me to New York City for the weekend just arrived at the gate; they should be boarding us soon. I am very curious to see what jetBlue is like. I have heard rave reviews of their service. Just now I had my shoes shinned and the fellow performing the service told me that jetBlue is the best way to fly in and out of New York. If they are as good as people make them out to be I think I will be sorry they do not fly into Portland International Airport.

Thursday in Rochester

I am feeling better today and much more rested. I got a good eight hours of sleep last night and am acclimating to the three-hour time shift. It feels much better to be at work meetings and be alert. The meetings are very encouraging as well. We have been very well received and I am gaining confidence in the work team we are partnering with in Rochester.

Second day in Rochester

Second day in Rochester and first night in quite a while when I got a full night?s sleep. I am still very tired, but don?t have a lot of time to rest. The business meetings are going well, we are getting a lot of work done, though being away from my computers is making it hard.

Rochester is very beautiful; at least it looks great buried under a few feet of snow. There is the whole winter wonderland look to the place. I am hoping my workmate David will take some pictures I can share later.

I am still fighting with the airlines to get my team reserved seats for the trip back. I have now spoken with four people at American Express Travel Services. They have been nice and helpful but seem to be oblivious to why I do not find it acceptable when they keep booking us on standby flights.

In Rochester

I am aboard a small aircraft en route to Cleveland, Ohio. The airplane has capacity for about 40 people and is not nearly tall enough for me to stand up straight. Weather report for Cleveland is for sunny, clear and 8 degrees. I had to get up at 4:30 am to be at the airport in time for the flight. That is 1:30 am West coast time for those who are counting. I was not able to get to sleep last night until around 12:30 am so I am running on less than four hours of sleep. I wish I could sleep on the plane but I have so far been unable to do so. I realized this morning that the only mental concept of Cleveland I have comes from the ‘Drew Carry Show’. I think I drove through Cleveland once when I was driving across the country but did not stop.

Stuck in Washington DC

Still stuck in Dulles, DC. I was able to get a hold of our travel agent this morning. American Express claims they thought we were booked through and that it’s United Airline’s fault that they bumped us off the plane. United of course claims that the fault lies with the travel agent.

Still in DC

Posted in Travels at 7:04 am by Leopoldo

I have a reservation to get to Rochester tomorrow morning at 7:00am. My team will just figure out how much we can do from our hotel room tonight. Our bags flew onto Rochester without us, so I am wearing the same clothes I was wearing yesterday and will get to wear tomorrow. At leats I had the presence of mind to put my toiletries bag in my carry on.

En route to New York

On an airplane between Portland and Dulles (Washington DC)
Got up at 5:00 am this morning to catch a town car (cheaper than a taxi from my house) to the airport for an 8:00 am flight. I am feeling much recovered from my cold, though I still have a sore throat and a light cough. I am very glad that the cold lifted when it did, this trip would have been painful to do in the state I was in last week. The trip thus far has been uneventful. Some air turbulence, we are promised winds upon landing in Dulles which should bounce the plane some. I am very glad I bought a pair of ear buds for my laptop and pre-loaded the hard drive with MP3s, by my count I have about 500 tracks to choose from.

Heading out to New York with a cold

Posted in Travels at 1:17 pm by Leopoldo

Sunday morning I will be heading out to New York on a business trip. Last weather report I saw for Rochester called for a high of 18 degrees and a low of zero degrees. I would be looking forward to this trip if it weren’t for the fact that I have a cold that has been kicking my ass.

I will try to post some updated while on the road…

Apple I being auctioned

Vintage Computer Festival has put an original Apple-I in good condition up for auction. This is a very unique auction as illustrated by this description:

Few Apple-1 computers come up for auction as very few still remain in existence. Only 200 Apple-1 computers were ever produced. Most Apple-1’s sold by the Apple Computer Company were traded in when the Apple ][ computer was announced. Of the machines that were traded-in, only one was known to have been rescued. If you’re an avid computer collector and have been looking for an Apple-1 to add to your collection, you do not want to pass this auction up.

Something Positive

Last November a friend sent me a link to the web comic something positive. Since then, I have slowly but steadily been reading the comic since the first episode. I fell sick this week and have had to stay home, which has given me an opportunity to finish reading the SP archives.

It is hard to say what it is about SP that caught my interest. The characters are violent, mean spirited, cynical, and yet lovable. What probably makes us care for the SP characters is the way they care for each other. Two of the main characters, Aubrey and PeeJee make it clear that they thrive on injuring others, but only seem to follow through in their threats when one of their friends is injured. The full cast of SP seems to live rather miserable lives, dealing with regular pain and injury, often brought on by those they love? which is probably what makes them so interesting. I have not seen a series that so honestly deals with such personal issues and manages to keep a macabre sense of humor through it all.
