Christmas in Seattle

Posted in Travels at 10:05 pm by Leopoldo

The last week has been a simply enchanting Christmas in Seattle. On Saturday when I arrived we watched Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring with some friends. I broke down the special effects for people and we talked about the loving care with which Peter Jackson prepared the movie. Afterwards my mother and I volunteered as Users at the ACT Theatere for a presentation of A Christmas Carol. The play was delightful with David Pichette delivering a simply masterful performance as Scrooge.

Get to know new music on launchcast

Posted in Music at 2:00 pm by Leopoldo

As is evident by my CD collection, I have a rather eclectic taste in music. Most of the music I listen to would be classified as ‘Electronica’ or ‘Techno’. Since it tends to be softer and smoother than house music I prefer to call it ‘technoambiance’. Finding good technoambiance music can be very challenging. There is not a lot of information out in the public domain on interesting and complex electronic music. The best way to get to know new music seems to be to find someone who has similar interests and to then compare notes, trade CDs. There is one online tool that is quite excellent for finding new music though: Yahoo Launchcast.

I Blame it on the Betamax

Posted in Other at 9:50 am by Leopoldo

I blame it on the betamax. You see, when I was three or four years old and lived out in the country, my parents got a betamax machine. My sister and I were prohibited from touching the betamax. I think my parents were afraid we would break it. Of course I accosted it whenever my parents were gone. They kept a collection of National Geographic tapes recorded off the TV. I would put them in and watch them over and over operating the machine with as much grace as my little fingers could muster. I remember once when my dad put the Betamax on pause while he checked on the donkey we kept out in the field. The machine started playing again after being on pause for a few minutes. He could not understand why. I thought about it and figured that if the read-head kept moving over the same piece of tape for too long it would wear it out and eventually break it. I tried to explain this to my dad but he did not seem to understand me. I think I was too young to make myself understood.

The advent of the Internet and Electronic Mail (email) has allowed for unprecedented speeds of information flow. Unfortunately with this came a new and impressive pathway for misinformation to flow. Most of you will within the first year of getting an email account receive warnings about email viruses, be offered great opportunities for wealth, and be asked to contribute email to a worthy causes. I would like to warn you about some particularly common scams, SPAM and urban legends that have been clogging our networks for the last few years:
