[Movie News]

Well ask and ye shall receive. According to StarWars.com the original Star Wars trilogy is finally getting a DVD release with the 1997 Special Edition versions coming out in a 4 DVD box set on September 21. Each movie is getting it's own disc with Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround sound re-mastering, the fourth disc is for special features and promises a making of documentary and "never before seen footage from the making of the three films".

I have to say I'd be more excited to learn that they were the actual origionals without all the extended scenes. This is one time that I feel purchasing a foreign bootleg wouldn't be a crime.

I'm so glad I still own a working laserdisc player, and the original trilogy in laserdisc format. For Christmas this year, I'll be burning a lot of DVD's of the original trilogy for my friends who are not going to want the Special Edition DVD's. This is not good news. The really intersting issue is that Star War (the version that Lucas fancies as his "rough draft") is on the National Film Registry. If it is only a rough draft, what's it doing there? And is it consistent to recognize a film on such a list when the artist is attempting to make it unavailable to viewers?

How can I get on the DVD mailing list?

I will never buy, as I've said before, the special editions. Even additions or changes that were okay, such as the discussion between Jabba and Han, weren't handled well, such as the stepping on the tail moment. Ugh.

At least I have the originals on video tape, just not widescreen.

btw, is there a boycott web page for these?

Yes the special editions are silly and trite. What fans should really be offended about is releasing these things early when he's already got plans for further tinkered versions, and boxed sets, and more money oh my! With the filth kiddie movies he's produced in Ep1 and Ep2 fans should send him a message and NOT buy these or any other star wars product. The flow of the dollar sends messages much louder than snivelling on web boards.

The fact that these are not the original movies but even further enhansed, changed versions of the special editions is not something that many people know, nor have they made this clear. Many people will buy these thinking they are getting Star Wars but instead they are getting some warped version to tie in with the newer films. Little do they know that this is false advertising and if they do not state this fact clearly on the box the dvds can be returned no questions asked and might even give way to a lawsuit.
