The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) Extended DVD Run Time

[Movie News]

rotk_poster.jpg

Peter Jackson said at an appearance that the extended release of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) will be 4 hours and 10 minutes long, that is 50 minutes more than the theatrical release. There is still no word on when the extended will be released but the theatrical release is expected on DVD late May to early June.

Only 50 minutes?? I was hoping for another 2 hours! And I mean that only half-jokingly.

Surprised to learn that the theatrical release is slated for May/June. This would break with the two-year tradition of a late August theatrical release preceding the extended edition in mid-November. I hope they got hold of Howard Shore early.

50 minutes?! Oh well...

...hopefully, this extended DVD edition will be released around August-ish, about three months from May 25th when the theatrical version will be released. I, for one, can NOT wait for the extended version until another November released. I've spent almost over two years waiting..!

RotK EE Rumored "longer than 4 hours and 50 min"

Editor's Note: I cannot confirm the accuracy of this report!

Nothing clear yet on the release date, let alone the disc specs for the third installment of The Lord of the Rings, however since both previous films had Extended Editions released on DVD it is fair to assume this will happen again, especially after it is rumoured Peter Jackson said the following at the Copenhagen premiere. Basically he commented that the first cut of Return of the King had a running time of four hours and fifty minutes. When asked why this was too long for theatres but acceptable for DVD, he said:

"It is different with the DVD version. People watch it at home. They can lay on the couch or spread the experience over two or three nights. That is the amazing thing with DVD. It gives a whole new dynamic and I can assure you that the DVD version of Return of the King will be longer than 4 hours and 50 min."

Unless any of our Danish readers have can confirm this then it is still rumour, however if true, this really is interesting news.

My note: Also note that Sir Ian McKellen (Gandalf) appeared on Jonathan Ross Friday night, and he said that the Extended Edition would be over five hours long.

So, it's coming sooooon! I'm getting impatient... I love LOTR movies so much that I would be happy if they released an all-day-long movie :))
