TNG: The High Ground

[Trek Talk]

TNG_high_ground.jpg

Oh sure, the bits in The High Ground about the children terrorist and the well-meaning warrior drawing pictures of Beverly are a bit gratutitous, but hey, they are worth overlooking for what is after all a pretty good episode. We get to see a lot of the very beautiful Gates McFadden and get to see her and Patrick Stewart (probably the best two actors on the show) share scenes and dialogue. The question of when do you stop calling someone a terrorist and instead refer to them as a 'freedom fighter' is also an interesting one.

I thought The High Ground was an excellent Trek episode, very much in the tradition of questioning societal issues in a well-thought-out manner. It seems to combine Trek's best facets - action, plot, human interest and moral depth - and comes out with a really well-acted (as you said, Leopoldo), meaningful episode. I thought Riker's line about one boy putting down his gun could have been a hit or miss, but in Frakes' hands it delivered.

Totally unrelated to the episode, but speaking of Frakes, I was just watching through my Roswell Season 1 DVDs and found him playing himself in the episode 'The Convention'. It was hilarious. Has anyone else seen this?

Funny, I actually asked my dad that very question when I was a kid (in the early 80s). I asked why America didn't have any terrorists, and he said "ask a Russian."

Yes, this episode is definitely one of the better ones. I especially liked the way the relationship between Beverly and Kyril Finn developed. Finn himself was one of the best bad guys ever seen on Star Trek. Here is someone who is unquestionably human, who believes in what he is doing. But at the same time, he seems to believe that the ends justify the means, and goes too far. Very, very interesting. I like the part where he gives Beverly the drawing.
