Sin City Movie Adaptation
[Movie News]For somebody as in love with the high-contrast shadow filled look of Film Noir as I am Frank Miller's graphic novel series Sin City borders on the pornographic. No, not because of the busty babes in slinky dresses (though that does help) but because of the beautiful sharp lines and harsh lighting that many have attempted but few films have truly managed (M (1931), The Third Man (1949), The Seventh Seal (1957)). Imagine my delight then when I read on Dark Horizons rumor that Miller's graphic novels are not only being adapted for the screen but "there's apparently going to be a unique tri-colour/high contrast method to filming". Yeah, I know it is way to early to start celebrating but. Yeeha!
Update (2/26/04)
An article at Variety.com confirms the filmic adaptation of "Sin City" and lists Robert Rodriguez (El Mariachi (1992), Spy Kids (2001), Once Upon a Time in Mexico (2003)) as the director.
Robert Rodriguez has committed to direct "Sin City," an adaptation of the Frank Miller graphic noir crime novel series. Dimension Films co-chairman Bob Weinstein has given Rodriguez the go-ahead to begin shooting next month in Austin, TexasPosted by Leopoldo at February 9, 2004 08:36 AM | TrackBack
It looks like another Frank Miller work, 300 is being set up for a filmic adaptation. Details are at: FilmForce: The Stax Report: Script Review of 300
Posted by: Leopoldo on February 19, 2004 04:00 PMApparently Mickey Rourke is signed to play Marv - awful idea. Marv is a massive in size and character. He's an icon to comic fans, not to be cast lightly.
Posted by: andrew rowat on April 3, 2004 02:49 AMmickey rourke should do just fine. it's always good to see that fella get work.
Posted by: rodrigo on April 7, 2004 01:50 PMSome encouraging news about the style of Sin City appeared at Dark Horizons today:
"Rodriguez plans on shooting Willis' sequences in black-and-white in order to pay tribute to Miller's B&W Sin City art, which is itself a homage to the dramatic visuals of the great Hollywood film noir movies of the 1940s and 50s (Criss Cross, The Asphalt Jungle, The Killing, Touch of Evil)._ Rodriguez does plan to shoot some sequences in color, but his choice to film even part of Sin City in black-and-white is courageous to say the least, and testifies to the control he must have over this highly intriguing project"
Clive Owen spoke with Empire Online and had this information on the Sin City movie:
The entire movie, confirmed Owen, was filmed [against green screen] a la the Star Wars prequels and Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, allowing Rodriguez to best capture Miller's singular visual style, which uses blacks and whites almost exclusively to create a world of shadow, deceit, violence and desire. And that's what we should expect from the movie. "The world is going to be put in afterwards, the backdrops," Owen says of Rodriguez' process. "The most striking thing about that movie is how incredibly faithful to the books it is. Frame by frame he's recreating Miller's graphic novels and if there's bubbles on the panel, then we say the dialogue. It's that faithful."
Frank Miller is co-directing the Sin City movie. Somehow, Robert got Miller out of seclusion for this project. Every part of this movie (including cast) was ok'd by Miller himself.
And yeah, Robert REALLY is sticking to the graphic novels. During a few shots Frank wanted to 'tweek' dialogue and appearances (giving a character a hat in one scene) and Rob would always say 'well ... that's not how you drew it'. At one point Frank actually drew in the book and said, 'see, now there's a hat.' Surprisingly good chemistry between these two guys.

Posted by: Leopoldo on December 23, 2004 11:28 AMMicky Rourke is an excellent choice for Marv IMHO, especially if RR instructs his cast to stick as closely to the original series' as possible.
i am looking forward to this movie more than any other, I can't wait for the interviews where Bruce Willis says "yeah, I really identified with my character" etc!
