Live Action Akira Project Dead but Neon Genesis Evangelion and Other Anime Proposed For Live Action Versions
[Movie News]Back in May I reported on a proposed live action adaptation of Akira. It now seems that director Stephen Norrington (Blade (1998), The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003)) has left the project and the film has been put on hold. An article on Dark Horizons though reports that a number of other Anime/Manga live action adaptations have either been proposed or are in production including the haunting Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995). A page with concept art for the Neon Genesis movie prepared by WETA is available. For a full list of what projects have been proposed and their status visit:

Posted by Leopoldo at January 19, 2004 09:44 AM | TrackBackI can't say I am disappointed to hear that the perpetrator of the dreadful League of Extraordinary Gentleman won't be directing the proposed live action remake.
Posted by: Dedman on January 19, 2004 05:53 PMI can.
Posted by: heathcliffe on January 22, 2004 10:14 AMpersonally I was looking foreward to this project, Akira itself was such a visually stunning manga/anime that a live action version would be extremely so. but unfortunately I have no big time hollywood direction credits and so I'll never get to make this or see it made...
Posted by: Araknuum on February 9, 2004 05:15 PMThe live action Akira movie was going to be so completely bad and far from what the anime was like that this project being dead makes me quite pleased. Any time an American company decides to make a movie based off of a Japanese product, it ends up sucking beyond anything that has ever sucked. They generally don't even bother finding out what the original story was. An exception, of course, being The Ring.
Posted by: Ydoc on February 16, 2004 11:41 AMIT probably won't happen anyway and if they do produce nge it will be totaly different to the original series.
Posted by: Pato on February 23, 2004 04:54 PMAnd if they use that usless kid from harry potter it will be crap!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: Pato on February 23, 2004 04:56 PMPersonally i'm terrified that the brilliance of Evangelion will be raped by exploitant hollywood directors and producers. The original creators from Gainix would have to be totally involved in everything from direction to script writing for this live action to win the respect and appreciation of original Evangelion fans.
Posted by: Barry on March 10, 2004 07:56 AMI'm so glad that there holding off akira but its a shame that These directors r thinking bout doing Evangelion and others. Its just not right taking a oringinal anime masterpeice and turning it inot a peice of crap....plus I don't want ppl sayin"Akira such and crapy movie" when they haven't even seen the original!!!!
Posted by: Rai on May 18, 2004 05:04 PMhonestly... it would be easier to make Akira as a live-action movie compared to NGE. I mean, Akira is about 2 hours... NGE with the series and the two remade last episodes it's aprox. 25 frickin' hours, how the hell are they gonna change all those small details into one movie If they don't make like a quadrology(or worse) where every movie is 4 hours.... I mean, they can't remove alla those scenes of serenity, that just makes something dumb, (and american :P). I never thought of NGE first as an Action/meccha-animé... It had soul, man!
But hey, I hope the guys at Weta Workshop know what kinda devil's work they're giving themselves into and that Hideaki Anno and the other people at Gainax who participated in the animé will put as much work as they did to the original and not let it go to ....aroiegorg uuugh me tired
I'm kinda drunk, so i'm going to hibernate now.
greetings from Gothenburg, imorn börjar fotbollen ju för fan o på tisdag blir det hultsfred :)
Akira is only two hours? Sounds like somone only saw the movie ;) Keep in mind that the Akira manga is how many mangas? Six? And the anime movie is only a summary of book one and the very last bits of the last book?
I agree with the general sentiment though. These mangas/animes are great because they aren't well known. Fringe culture should remain just that.
Posted by: seloce on July 28, 2004 06:49 PMif harry potters is goin to be in it it will be rubish. the directer will complete mess up the film and the charactors in it will be crap.
Posted by: chris on August 14, 2004 09:30 AMI think Akira would make a very decent live action film, if it was done by the right people in exactly the right way, but there's no way any american or european film studio could do that properly. some of the most talented and skilled craftsmen of the trade poured hours of painstaking hard work into the lord of the rings movies, and they still pissed off a lot of LOTR fans by leaving things out or making minor changes, I think live action films based on anime would suck for the same reasons... bottom line, Hollywood + anime = ...well, crap.
Posted by: Lyric on September 4, 2004 07:13 PMSo true!
Akira doesn't need a live-action version! How about a HUGE re-release for the cleaned-up, uncut special edition film with the better translation...or better yet, go with subtitles! Show us the original in all its glory and forget about a tired "re-imagining" starring the latest WB heartthrob (and you know that's just who they'll cast.)
Plus, nothing can touch the original manga. Truly epic in scope and beautifully illustrated, it would take a budget the size of a small country's GNP to bring it to life. Don't drag this through the hollywood mud!!

Posted by: da on October 14, 2004 01:04 PMi agree with u guys, howver i have 2 say it would be interesting 2 see how the uncultured hollywood would re-create such a beautiful piece of art. i know it would never be able 2 reach the standards of NGE and would be an insult to the creators and fans alike, but to see american trailer trash films accept such a thing will be absloutely hilarous
Posted by: some Kid on November 13, 2004 10:34 PMwow, guess you guys havent heared that Hideaki Anno is going to be directly involved in this process. the movie will NOT be following the series, they will be creating an alternate timeline, or so the rumors have said....
Posted by: j on April 19, 2005 10:02 AMFrom what i can see, they are going to use 18 year olds for the actors...
which means, Shinji, Rei and Asuka, will all be 18 instead...
sigh...
Hideako Anno, has said that he doesnt want anything more to do with the series, however, the producers of the film have been talking with him to get in depth views of the series...
The likelyhood of the movie being adapted from the manga is probably more likely, than the series, as the manga has less battles in it.
It will most likely be that Asuka is already at NERV before shinji
and NERV will be in the US somewhere, instead of japan...
So, in all, the movie probably wont have the same effect that the anime/manga series has, and it will prob have lots of things changed, so it appeals to the american audience, not the Eva Otakus out there...
but hopefully, they do a decent job of it...
Im more worried about the Know-it-alls that will show up after, who will carry on about the movie, and wont say anyhting about the series...
and im kinda glad to hear that the akira live action is not going to be done, if they were gonna "Cr@pify" it...
Posted by: Raz on June 6, 2005 06:39 PMI dont think either should be done but I think it would be alot easier for them to create an akira live action movie. Think about it. As far as cast, its going to be very difficult to find the right characters for EVA. Whereas in Akira, nearly everyone in the comic is Japanese. If Hollywood wouldn't be stupid (for example) as to cast an american to fill in Kaneda's role, and rather, actually choosing an asian who can better fit the part, then I'm all for it. They already made a working bike for Kaneda in real life, so thats already set.
So basically...."cmon hollywood, lets give this an all asian cast". : )
And graphically...cmon. Besides creating a realistic armaggedon effect from akira, not much else needs to be done since everything else will be regular camera tricks. And for the destruction of the buildings. Either get the guys who did the 3d effects for lord of the rings or create model structures like in End of Days and do it from there.
And as far as storylines, I dont see what the big fit is about. Yeah, Akira has 6 volumes...so what? Ever since when nowadays have they crammed series into 1 movie? Spiderman? Lord of the Rings? Harry Potter? X-Men?
But then again, I dont know why Otomo actually allowed Americans to even take part on this in the first place considering Japan is good enough to do this on their own. Look how they did the live action Casshern? I wasn't a fan of the anime but the live action wasn't so bad.
Posted by: Carmaine on June 12, 2005 11:03 PMshould we really care if it sucks?
The anime exists, the fans exist and honestly if anyone who sees a crappy movie and wasnt too lazy to do research still doesnt like eva, they dont deserve to.
To explain; are we really so concerned about the opinions of others that true art cant be created anymore?
I personally view art as any work of imagination and/or expression, if the movie is a carbon copy of the original what would be the point?
I say let them do whatever they like and if it blows, so what?
i just wondering how i can be a cast of the Akira Movie??? If any one knows email me
ummmm.... all i can say is; what the hell is keeping that asteriod?
