Len Wiseman Talks About Underworld Sequel

[Movie News]

uw2_6.jpg

In an interview with moviehole.com Len Wiseman, writer and director of Underworld, talked about what to expect in the planned sequel:

"This time we can expect more history about the vampires and the werewolves, which we weren't able to do in the first one. There's going to be a bit of actual battle in the medieval times between the werewolves and vampires, with like army-clad vampires on horses, kinda like "Braveheart". It'll play out a bit like "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" where the first ten to fifteen minutes of the film will be a prequel. We're going to really dive into the dark ages, and then centre some more on the modern day. We will have a lot of the same cast, but also new cast too. It's in early development, so of course we have no idea whom, but yeah, some new people will be involved. Marcus of course will be in the sequel".

Does anyone have any idea if the scientist in the movie is a Lycan? If so does, that make Marcus half Lycan and half vampire?

Posted by: Charlotte on January 6, 2004 10:20 PM

Yes the scientist is a Lycan if you watch Marcus's eyes at the end of Underworld you notice that they turn from vampire blue to hybrid black. Should be very interesting.

Posted by: Jason on January 7, 2004 03:42 AM

I LOVE THIS MOVIE. The only downside is Kraven... He couldn't act his way into a childrens play. Other then him, I loved every minute of the movie. It was a great consept and story that was cleverly done. The wolves in the movie were awsome and I like the fact that the vampires in this movie didn't advertise what they were just based on looks as in movies like "Interview With A VAmpire"
I also see a bit of a hole in the theory. it was my understanding that the only way to start the hybrid chain was through the direct decendant of the original imortal. If a vampire bit a werewolf, are vice versa, they would die. How then could Marcus become a hybrid and survive? They need to clear up that little oops, unless I just misunderstood something.

Posted by: Jason on January 8, 2004 06:54 PM

I believe Viktor told the Lycan scientist that Marcus was a descendent of Corvinus - as is Michael.

Posted by: Stacy on January 8, 2004 07:12 PM

Hey i just watched the movie on dvd. that movie really rocked my invader zim sox! I couldn't stop watching even though my bladder really needed to be excercised. I'm not really an action movie guy but this movie caught me and like held me hostage. i didn't follow along alot of the part where viktor and selene were talking but then again i probably have ADD and i had alot of people talking then but im going to watch it again and probably buy it tomorrow.

Posted by: Baub on January 9, 2004 08:54 PM

I am the ultimate Underworld freak, I have all the figures, all the posters, the movie the day it came out, and I saw it 10 times IN THEATERS! 17 times total...So far.. WHOOOOOOOOOO THIS ABSOLUTLY MAKES MY WORLD SPIN!!! Its my favorite movie of ALLLLL Time! And to know there will be a sequel for sure is like *chorus of angels sing* Whooooot! DONT KILL SELENE, shes the best character. Oh and, DO NOT, cast Kraven again, OMG HE SUCKS SO BAD! He is the worst acter EVER, that whole beginning scene where he first appears and is arguing with Selene and Kahn, omfg...I laugh everytime hes so bad. Phooy, I liked Kahn too. Make Kraven die at the beginning ^_^ He needs it! WHOOOO FOR UNDERWORLD II YES!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Layla on January 11, 2004 07:29 PM

If the hybrid was that much of a match against Victor and he was just born, what do they have to worry about?
Apparently vampires and lykans get more powerful with age, Michael was as strong and fast if not more so than Victor at birth.

I thought the end of the movie was awkward though, with Michael just standing around like a dork.

I'm not jumping to any conclusions about Marcus. His eyes could have turned black just in reflection of what memories he was seeing in the blood. If I understand the legend correctly, Marcus can't become a hybrid because he is already fully transformed into a vampire. They needed Michael's blood because it was the original bloodline capable of adapting to either or both of the bat and wolf virus. Maybe it didn't matter if Marcus was already a vampire, his blood is still capable of bonding with the wold virus.

Posted by: Geoff on January 12, 2004 09:21 AM

Underworld is simply a great movie. I don't think it got the recognition it deserved at the box office. I hope more people go out and rent/buy this movie. Each time I watch it, I find something new in the movie.

I cannot wait until the sequel! I'm pumped.
Just wait 'til Marcus wakes up...he's gonna be one pissed off vampire...lycan...or whatever he has become...
Just a thought (you never see the doctor change into a wereworlf in the movie...so how do we know for sure?)

Posted by: Maureen on January 13, 2004 01:19 PM

ok everyone since your so confused.

ALexander corvinus...He survived a plague that was in his town. His body withstood it and improved to benefit him. He became the first.
He had 3 kids. One bitten by a bat(vampire(marcus)) the second by a wolf (lycan) and the third left to walk as a mortal...Now michael is the decendant of the mortal child...And marcus IS the child bitten by a bat...Still dont understand well his blood was that of alexander cirvinus making it posible for him to transform into a hybrid. If you do not beleive hes a hybrid read my next post...

Here is the end of the underworld movie tie in story. It signals that there will be a second movie. Enjoy...

Hours had passed in the silent crypt. The body of the lycan scientist Singe had gone stiff with rigor mortis. But his immortal blood continued to creep slowly across the marble floor of the underground chamber, threading its way through the intricate design containing the sacred tombs of the elders.
The sanguinary tide passed by Viktor's empty niche, then Amelia's. Yet, with perverse inevitability, it came to rest atop the polished bronze plaque bearing the sculpted letter M.
For Marcus.
Rivulets of lycan blood seeped through the edges of the burnished hatch, slithering downward into the sepulchral cavity where Marcus, the last surviving elder, hung upside down inside his tomb, lie a slumbering vampire bat. The energizing blood poured over Marcus's emaciated frame, streaming down his skeletal body until it reached the thin, withered lips of a skull like face.
Minutes passed, until a dormant heart began to beat with growing strength. A sigh escaped the parched red lips, and a pair of hungry eyes awakened deep within the sunken recesses of their matching sockets.
Jet-black eyes, just like Michael Corvin's had become.
Hybrid eyes.

Does anyone know when the sequal is coming out. My friend and I really want to know.

Posted by: AKRO on January 14, 2004 05:19 PM

The sequel was greenlit but is not in production yet. Do not expect any date announcements until much later in the year.

Posted by: Leopoldo on January 14, 2004 07:03 PM

What the sequal will be called? Like is it just gonna be called Underworld II or something else?

Posted by: AKRO on January 16, 2004 06:53 PM

I,m SOOO excited about UNDW2. I know that u'll be posting when it comes out way later but could u tell us when so I can check it out? U know what'll be really awesome 2 half vamp.,half lycans! It's either gonna be a bloodbath or a family reunion.

Posted by: Shawna on January 17, 2004 11:10 AM

I think Underworld is the best vampire and or werewolf movie ever made. I can't wait to see Underworld II! Though the special effects were spectacular, they in no way detracted from the terrific performances given by the actors, particulary by Shane Brolly and Michael Sheen, although all performances were excellent. The film did not get due props from the critics, but what else is new? Bravo.

Posted by: Amy on January 17, 2004 11:17 AM

I enjoyed it. It's too bad no one can ever make a movie with dark mysterious people in long black coats who shootup dimly lit ceramic tile rooms without thinking of The Matrix. But they did an excellent job.

The drop from the building was sweet.

Posted by: Makki on January 17, 2004 08:35 PM

The movie is straight pimpin, I love it. I'm stoked about a sequel comming out, it'll be rad as hell. I agree some critics shot the movie down but what do they know it was AWSOME, I loved the story line and everything about it. I'm all ears for new news on the sequel Kate is hot...had to throw that in

Posted by: Tom on January 17, 2004 08:45 PM

I was wondering, is lucian going to be in the sequal i thought he was at first but now im not so sure, Could anyone tell me if he is or not? And if so is he going to have a small or big impact in the movie, will he be in the movie more than 2 seconds will they show him throught the movie? PLEASE SOMEONE TELL ME.

Posted by: Erika on January 18, 2004 09:03 PM

now that i think about it i think he will...i read somewhere that the sequel will have a lot about the past and the beggining of the war..SO if so lucian will be in it ^_^

I have good news for all you Kate Beckinsale fans. You enjoyed her as a killer vampire in Underworld (2003), now take your first look of her as a vampire killer at the GeekRoar Van Helsing gallery captured from the just released Van Helsing Trailer.

Posted by: Leopoldo on January 18, 2004 09:37 PM

I was inserted in learning more about the lineage and history background that the story was all tied together with. Most of all how they tided the story all together with the first immortal (Alexander Cornius) and his sons. If anyone has information on this, with other web sights and such. This was the first time I had ever heard that the werewolf and vampires were related by one common ancestor.

Posted by: Keith on January 19, 2004 12:45 PM

What is this Van Helsing supposed to be about, looks interesting enough......

Posted by: Tom on January 19, 2004 06:15 PM

Thanx for answering my question but i have another one will the sequal be the same as the first one i mean will they just have flash backs of the begining or will there be more to it. And people (My friends) are wondering is the scientest in the first one, was he a lycan they keep buggin me and i say he was but they say he was'nt but i am not so sure no so if anyone could fill US in i would like that. THANKS

Erika, in the novelization of _Underworld_ by Greg Cox, on page 74 it reads: "Singe had been a prominent biochemist in his native Austria before being recruited into the pack by Lucian himself, who had offered the dying scientist immortality in exchange for his loyalty and genius." So, tell your friends that you're right. :> I loved the movie so much that I had to buy the book.

For pictures of the beautiful Lucian, you can look at a few right here, I don't know about other places. The cast of this movie are all so gorgeous, it's a shame that there wasn't a calendar. Maybe next year!

Posted by: Amy on January 20, 2004 08:02 AM

To tell you the truth i never knew there was a book, i watched the movie about..... two weeks ago and i cant stop watching it so i looked the movie up online and saw tons of people talking about the book so, were do you get it? can you get it at any book store? Well thanx for Answering my (our) question Now i can rub it in there faces =-) well talk 2 you all later im lookin for more pictures of the gorgeous people in the movie (LUCIAN). Later

I had been wanting to see this movie since it was out in the theatre, but with my busy schedule, I was never able to. But, I finally rented it on netflix.com and I absolutely loved it. Normally when i build up the movie in my head and don't see it for a while, I get disappointed - not in this case! I kind of knew there had to be a sequel though, they totally left you hanging. But, I am real excited for it to come out even though they are not even in production so it will be, like, two years before we ever see it! But, good job! I can't wait to see the next one (and this time I will HAVE to see it in the theatre!

But, I am still a little confused about some of the things, like Kraven - where'd he go? And, Michael - who's side is he on? Will Selene still hunt werewolves now that she's in love with one?

Posted by: Kara on January 22, 2004 11:19 AM

I can't believe some of the comments about Shane Brolly's performance as Kraven. I found him to be very believable as Kraven. He was excellent! Physically he's tall, dark AND handsome plus he's very brooding...which in my personal opinion makes the Kraven character that more fascinating. Perhaps it was the fact that he is handsome that puts off some...therefore they judge him unfairly by saying "he can't act". Can you say "jealous" boys and girls?
PLEASE cast him again for the sequel....his character is very much needed! He lived through the first movie and was one of the leading characters! Uumm.. Hello! How could you NOT have him in the sequel? Hell...he's one of the reasons why I want to go see the sequel! Kate Beckinsale and Michael Sheen rocked as well!!
The special effects were awesome btw.

Posted by: Mary on January 26, 2004 09:22 AM

Just rented the dvd and watched last night.
Kraven was a bad mother-f'in vampire!! Kate Selene) had it going on...I love how she dropped from the building and just walked away like it was no thang!
Bad ass movie! Can't wait for the sequel!

Posted by: Neal on January 26, 2004 09:28 AM

Great movie! The who got all negative on Kraven are just a bunch of wimpy, dateless dorks who got mad at how good he looked. My aunt thought he was da' bomb! She don't even like vampire movies but was totally crushin' on Kraven.
Hey dorks don't hate just celebrate!
Lucian better be back for the sequel!
Much love to Selene

Posted by: milos on January 26, 2004 09:33 AM

Who's the Van Helsig character? Is this a totally separate movie from Underworld? I'm just confused because from the pic gallery it looks as if Kate B. is playing a vampire - once again! I just don't see her playing 2 different vampires for 2 different movies. Isn't that Hugh Jackman (Xmen I - II)?
Any info would be appreciated! Thx!

Posted by: tru on January 26, 2004 09:40 AM

Dr. Van Helsing is a vampire hunter character from the novel Dracula by Bram Stroker. Stroker's novel is the source for a lot of the vampire lore we know today and the original inspiration for all the movies, novels, TV shows, games that are popular today. You can get more information on Dracula at Amazon or even better read parts or the whole novel online at Page by Page Books. The new movie adaptation does in fact star Hugh Jackman of X-Men fame and Kate Beckinsale of Underworld fame though in this movie Kate plays a vampire hunter not a vampire. You can get more information on the movie by following links from my post on the trailer or by reading up on the movie at the Internet Movie Database.

i absolutely am in love with this movie.

i'm glad to see a movie with vampires in it that isn't completely centered on sex.
i wish i could get ahold of a picture of the train scene ([2nd]death of amelia) i adore love the clothes.
i actually would be forever indebted to whomever could get me full front and back views of all of the dresses in the movie

Posted by: Rysa on January 26, 2004 06:45 PM

I loved this move.

I bought it on DVD about a week ago just on a whim (I originally intended to only get the Hulk DVD, but I spotted Underworld on my way out and figured I'd pick it up). I neglected to see Underworld while it was in theaters due to all the bad reviews, and I wasn't expecting anything fabulous when I bought the DVD, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Even disregarding the plot (which I felt was good but not great), the characters and world were enough to draw me in for no less than three repeat viewings.

I couldn't really picture Kate Beckinsale as a gun-toting vampyre heroine going in, but she really fits the role perfectly (or maybe it's just the black leather catsuit that fits HER so perfectly). In any case, I'm majorly crushing now.

I also like how Les Wiseman reinvented vampirism in a scientific light as opposed to the fantasy mumbo jumbo we're all familiar with. I know quite a few people complained about Underworld's vampyres having a reflection, not being able to morph into bats, Selene saying that Michael "saved [her] life", etc, but I really prefer that to the nonsensical religious mythos surrounding them. I mean, can someone give me a scientific reason why a vampyre WOULDN'T have a reflection? And can someone honestly say the movie would've been better if Selene could turn into a bat and fly around?

Blood sucking, super strength, uncanny agility, immortality; those are things I can realistically see a virus causing. Not casting a reflection and being able to transform into a bat/mist; that's just hocus pocus.

Now all I need is for Rachael Leigh Cook to be cast as Selene's younger and available vampyre sister in the sequel and I'll officialy be an Underworld fanboy... ;)

I thought this movie was great, it made you think about what was going on and when I saw it in theaters I was surprised and also pleased at the many plot twists, and they were done well not like other movies (*cough wild things *cough). Casting was great, I thought Kraven did a respectable job and certainly looked the part as did all the other cast members, especially lucian. I love dark movies like this that have a sort of gothic aura about them, dont really know why, just my thing. One thing I was a bit dissapointed about was the look of the hybrid, I am not totally displeased but personally I thought during the flick as michael was changing and finding that middle ground between werewolf and vampire he looked better and more intimidating in those mid stages, thats a personal gripe though and totally subjective, I just hoped for something bigger maybe with wings or something( although I realize that is borderline cheesy). One last thing I wanted to see more of in the movie were the werewolves. I wanted to see them dynamically leaping from walls and tearing people apart with ease, scaling rooftops or showing off more of their innate abilities that would make anyone want to fear them even more. Anyways it was an energetic movie,it had great casting and for a rookie effort very pleasing that measures up to the best of filmmaking currently out there. I cant wait for the sequel and hope it lives up to all of my hopes.

Posted by: SlayerX51 on February 2, 2004 01:41 AM

In all I thought the movie was great,Sure Craven was not the Best actor but he was not a totally horrible He fit the part very well and you all have to admit(Ladies) He did look good when he had the Blue Contacts in. They could have shown more warewolves themselves instead of glimps of them, They did a Wonderful job on the Warewolve costumes so they should have shown them off, And Lucian Is the Hot one of the bunch other than Michael but Lucian is Hotter.

P.S. I have a Question, I know Marcus will be a Half and Half for drinkin the Lycan blood, but some people are sayin he will be stronger than Michael? I dont think he will Because Michael has been a half and half for longer, and Marcus is just now turning...So i am puzzled who will be Stronger i think Michael, And if anyone has any cluse for me please post them. (And I know Marcus is an Elder but he has still not turned yet and Tecnecly he is being Reborn into an Half and Hlaf so. HELP ME!

Posted by: Aromine on February 3, 2004 02:13 AM

I dont think the scientist was a lychin. At no given time did they say he was nor did he make any attempt to transform. I think that he may have just been a pet or some mad scientist. I dont see why when he was brought in before viktor that he didnt make any effort to escape if he were a lychin. Also, when markus' eyes turned blue i dont think they were turning black i think it was just fading out to create a more dramatic ending. When viktor claimed markus to be a descendant of corvinus, the scientist said they needed a pure source and that Markus was already a vampire thus would not be able to become both vampire and lychin (if infact the scientist was a lychin). Also, if Markus was able to become both Vampire and Lychin then you would have to consider Selene as well because she bit Michael...I could be way off base but thats what i thought. 2cents

Posted by: Domonick on February 3, 2004 11:47 AM

The scientist was a lycan, The only reason He did not try 2 change at any point was because he had the Silver Bullets in his body and it prevents the change, And yes Marcus was a decendent of corvinus and he was a pure blood and Thus drinkin the Lycans blood he has become an half and half. And selene she will Not become a half and half because when she bit Michael he was not a Lycan yet member they gave him a shot so it would prevent the change for a While. And I just like you Be way off And if i am someone please tell me.

Posted by: Dania on February 3, 2004 10:54 PM

I love underworld it is the best movie I have ever seen. I watched it twice a day for just over a week. I was sort of scared to get it thinking that it would be a horror movie with blood, guts and gore, but it had none of that and now it is my fav. show in the whole world. I agree with who ever said that it they should make a trilogy out of it. My dad thought it sucked, but I told him it was a great movie and that he has no taste in shows at all. My friend on the other hand also loves the show and was crazy when I told her that they were making a sequal. We both think that Michael (Scott Speedman) is hot. We just wanted to say "GO UNDERWORLD" AND "THAT WE CAN'T WAIT FOR THE SEQUAL"

Posted by: Akro on February 5, 2004 08:51 PM

I agree it was a great movie and when your parents see it they think it sucks but they have NO! imagination so......I watched it a couple times before I got the whole Corvinus thing but i get it perfactly now.

Posted by: Unknown on February 5, 2004 10:27 PM

I think that Underworld is one of the best vampire films to come out in the last couple of years, not forgetting blade of course :).

The dark ambient atmosphere was incredible and really set the mood for the whole movie. There has been so much care taken in the whole production; the music, costumes the story line. I believe that it gives justice and honour to the vampire myths and legends.

All the actors did extremely well, and I mean ALL the actors. Shane Brolly played Kraven convincingly and does not get enough credit for his fantastic job as the dark lord. I think some people need to check themselves first before they go criticizing others for pouring their heart and soul into a such a role that has given us the opportunity to see such an awsome film.

Posted by: mel on February 6, 2004 11:28 PM

Underworld has certainly left a lot open for the sequel. It is quite obvious that Markus will be a hybrid in the sequel, otherwise why waste the last scene of the movie just so we can see some blood poor into his tomb, come on the eyes clearly go hybrid black. And i am not convinced Lucian is dead, The more observant would have noticed Lucian injecting Michaels blood while waiting impatiently for Raze to return with the female elders blood which which Raze belatedly and conveniently drops at what he thinks is lucian's corpse. I believe that Lucian then injected the vampire elders blood off screen when he comes to which combined with michaels blood would make him a hybrid. From then on he put on another phoney death act in front of Kraven so he could make another suprised return to take his revenge in the sequel.

Posted by: Napoleon Solo on February 7, 2004 07:34 AM

U know what Napoleon I never thought about him injectin himself with the Elders blood, I in a strange way that lucian was not dead because Lucian injected himself with michaels blood....Oh which means that he could inject himself with the Elders blood!! I am soo Dumb, Good lookin out. And Mel U are right Kraven did not get enough credit... He played the part of a dark lord,Well i better go and cheack out the movie again, I gatta study it movie more to see what else i have missed.

Posted by: Q on February 8, 2004 04:17 PM

I enjoyed Underworld as it seems many people did. A lot of the things didn't make sense. For example, how the hell did her pistol shoot like it was a freaking machine gun? it's like she had 20 bullets in one clip, but then again .. it is just a movie. =P Also, Marcus becoming a hybrid didn't make sense. Singe explained it as though the combination of the vampire blood and werewolf blood wouldn't work. I understand that he's a direct descendant, but isn't his blood tainted? I thought they need the pure form of the virus for it to work. The only way the last scene would've made sense to me is if Singe injected himself with Michael's blood already.

Anyways, other than some of it's discrepancies, the movie was pretty good.

Posted by: lia on February 12, 2004 11:30 PM

Underworld was such a good movie. We LOVED it. at first it was kinda confusing on who was good and who was bad, but it made it clear later. besides the confusion hooked us in and made it more interesting. We think kraven owned to much silk, even for a girl. We can't wait for the sequel. Selene kicks major ass! Her Charactor is our idle! This movie was the best.

Posted by: Colleen/Danie on February 15, 2004 10:56 PM

i thought the movie rocked right after i finished it i went to the computer and looked up if there was going to be a sequal i really hope there is and cant wait to see it. to my understanding the sequal will have old battles in it that is going to be so cool will selene be in it she is so hot overall great movie

i just mad a comment if anyone nows about hte sequal email me aight i gtg back to class im in school right now gtg lata

Posted by: Jason on February 17, 2004 07:18 AM

Jason....I think the Underworld sequal is goin to be about the vampiers and Lycans past, There History, That is what i herd from diffrent people, It would make sense though, The movie started out kinda raw, I am not sayin its bad it is a bomb azz movie but that would be good for the sequal......it would make alot more sense if you ask me. I could be way off but you never know!

The whole thing how Marcus turned into a hybrid confused me. At first they said the lycan/vampire viruses were transmitted by a bite, but Marcus turned hybrid after swallowing blood. Also if this is true that blood can change you, shouldn't Selene be dead as she drank Michaels blood to change him? She hasn't got corvinus blood. Maybe shes fine coz Michaels got corvinus blood but still, shouldn't she be a hybrid? o_0

Posted by: Lanfear>> on March 2, 2004 08:23 PM

Okay this is the deal! Marcus has the corvinus blood so he can change like michael did and the reason Selene is NOT dead after she drank michaels blood is because he was not a Lycan yet, Remember Lucian gave him a shot so it would stop him from changing into one, so that is why she did not dye. If anyone has any more questions about the movie or is very confused about what i just said then State it on the message board

Posted by: unknown on March 3, 2004 09:00 PM

the whole deal with Marcus is he's not a hybrid. he had the potential to become either a vampire or a lycan and as fate would have it, he was bitten by a vampire thus, transforming him into 100% vampire. at the end of the movie when the blood of the scientist poured into his mouth i'm pretty sure that was marcus in pure vampire form opening his eyes. if it looked different than the regular vampires it was probably just cause the director wanted to make him look unique in some way. no vampire who bites a werewolf dies. it's just like sucking blood from a human, no adverse effects other than the human can be turned but a lycan cannot.

likewise, when Selene bites Michael, one of the few of the decendants from the Corvinus that can actually be turned into a hybrid and who has already been bitted by a lycan, becomes a species of both. and since he had not been turned 100% into a lycan when she had bitten him, his human form was able to turn hybrid.

What makes u so sure that u are right? I get were "Unknown" is commin from and were you are commin from but does anyone "Really" know what happenes have you seen the sequal yet? so untill anyone see's the sequal you could both be rong 4 all we know but it is always good to throw out ideas.
By the By who agree's with who? Ok there is "UNKNOWNS" part and "CHRIS'S" part and whoever has any other ideas then please feel free to tell us!
No Need To Start Up Any Trouble Here! Jus Wounderin?!

Posted by: Kibble on March 8, 2004 03:42 AM

I kinda agree with Unknown because I always thought that even though Marcus could choose weather he could be a Vamp or Lycan and yes he chose Vamp, But that does not really mean that he cant become a lycan aswell or a hybrid, I get were your commin from about the "Full vampier" thing but no matter what he still has the corvinus blood no matter what way you look at it, The way you (Chris) made it look is that he can't be a hybrid, but he really can, its not like he has no blood line in him.
And I also agree with Kibble nither of you know weather or not he is one or not, cuz nither of you have seen the sequal yet!

i love this movie and have watched it over and over again at least a dozen times and i hope it doesn't flop like the matrix did. i think that marcus is able to drink the blood of a lycan because he is a direct descendant of alex corvinus but he cannot change into a hybrid or lycan because he is already a vampire. but the fact that lucian was going to do what seems to possibly happen to marcus towards the end makes me wonder if its possible. but then again michaels blood is the only bloodline not tainted, and therefore mixable with all to form a hybrid, so ultimately i would say that marcus cannot change with just the blood of a lycan. i also think that this was an excellent cast to include kraven. Remember he was a buerocrat not a warrior, and he depicted that role well. selene was a trinity times 2. and victor was powerful and captivating. Actually, i was upset that he had to die in the end. but the only question i have is that victor told selene right before his battle with michael that he had to kill his daughter because the baby in her womb was an abomination. but how could she be pregnant or how could the blood lines be mixed that way if they needed a direct human descendant in order to survive a blending of the species. who can answer that one!

ok, from what I understand they needed a pure strand of the virus to _inject_ into lucian, not to become a hybrid, and for those of you who say that it was just an effect of Marcus' eyes turning black to make the ending more dramatic, come on, give the director more credit than to make a mistake like that, any legacy of kain fans notice an eerie resemblance between the hybrid and the ancient vampires minus wings, well I guess mainly cuz he was blue... but still, it was exhillerating, I didn't have so much a problem with the reflections as the constant water, when I think vampire, I am tainted by Legacy of Kain, where sunlight doesn't mater, but water is deadly, Kraven was ok, oh one thing, how can marcus be the first vampire if viktor is supposed to be the oldest vampire? it was cool how everyone jumped off four story building and just walked away like it was nothing :-D I don't think they went into the sunlight and silver nitrate bullets enough, they were just kind of there. while I am one of the biggest vampire fans ever, I still would have to side with the Lycans, oh and the scientist definately was a lycan, otherwise the bullet would have done nothing to him, he just got shot once in the arm (I know this cuz I'm watching it now and the part did that) that wouldn't do much to a human if anything, but it completely disabilitated him. wasn't it awesome when viktor killed him? and when selene killed viktor? anyone notice that only marcus has a c in it, everyone else has a k where a c would be found? and to contridict an earlier statement, couldn't they get both the strain and the powerful elder blood from marcus? well I'm hoping this post made sense, cuz I get the feeling it's disjointed but I'm to busy watching underworld right now to care so there ya have it

A note on the people who keep saying Singe *the scientist* wasn't a lycan..yes he was ^^;;; The novelization goes into much greater detail than the movie was able to..*damn studio execs...* but according to the novel Singe was a biochemist in austria dying of leukemia, and Lucian offered to save him via making him a lycan if he'd use his brains to help his people. So Singe was a lycan..just a brainy one instead of pure brawn/muscle power like Raze was. Lucian was more intellectual as well, hence why he never took full lycan form in the movie (and why he yelled at Pierce and Taylor for brawling in the beginning of the movie and said they were acting like a pack of rabid dogs.. *love that line..* the only time Lucian really `wolfs out' is when he bites Michael..but only his eyes and teeth transform. In the novel Singe wasn't even looking forward to going to retrieve Michael..because as he said, he was a scientist..not a thug lol but...back to Singe..in the movie itself, when he's being interrogated by Viktor and Selene and he's explaining Lucian's plan, when he talks about how they mixed vampire and lycan blood and the cells attacked each other, "even at the cellular level our species seem destined to annihilate each other" so poor Singe `was' a lycan...*sniffles* *definately a lycan fangirl here..poor Lucian...grr...Viktor got what he deserved..creepo...*

Underworld is such an awesome movie! My favorite part was when Viktor's head was sliced in half. It looked so COOL! I like both Vampires and Werewolves. But anyone who insults either of them are just stupid!

Underworld Fans,
If you loved the movie please, get the novel. It is even better than the movie. It can be found at any book store and many drug stores. The novel gives much more information on the story.
I also recommend listening to the commentary on the DVD. The story writters Kevin Grevioux (aka Raze), Danny McBride and Len Wiseman give details you will love to sink your teeth into.
Lycans and Vampires are welcome to E-mail me. My address is hrhaurora@yahoo.com. Just put Underworld in the title. Thank you, to all of you who have listed sites to get even more information, and a special thank you to the person who gave the name of the second Underworld novel to come.

I believe that Marcus was turning into a hybrid. The Lycans' plan wasn't to turn Micheal or Marcus into a hybrid, but to turn Lucian into one. Lucian was not related to the Corvinus bloodline so he needed both the blood of a ancient vampire and the blood of either a human or a Lycan who was part of the Corvinus bloodline.

The rules are aparrently different for someone who is a member of the Corvinus bloodline. Micheal was infected by both viruses by Lucian and Selene, neither of whom was of the Corvinus bloodline. If Marcus also of the Corvinus bloodline follows the same rules then yes he could easily be a new hybrid.

As for why the Lycans didn't try to grab Marcus. First, they might have realized that Marcus could become a hybrid. That would just be making their enemy even more powerful. Second is that attacking the mansion would have destroyed their alliance with Kraven, and finally there is a good chance they would lose such a battle anyways.

Hi. I love Underworld, and I've been looking for weeks for news about the second one Blood Enemy so if anyone has any news about it please tell me...

great pics

Posted by: lycan65 on April 5, 2004 08:28 PM

Um...Sorry to burst your bubble here. The next movie will NOT be called "Blood Enemy". That's the name of the book coming out later this year by Greg Cox, the author of the book adaptation of Underworld. "Blood Enemy" is a book written in the Underworld "extended universe".

Underworld 2 is not scheduled to begin filming until later this year. In fact, all scheduling is tentative until they get the script finalized, which they have not. IF they finish the script, and IF they manage to begin filming in late 2004, then the movie won't be released until late 2005 AT THE EARLIEST.

Using simple logic here...Why would they release the book for Underworld 2 if they won't even premiere the movie until at least a year later (late 2005)?

I really loved Underworld. I love vampire movies and after seeing this movie I have a huge respect for the Werewolves too. I thought it was cool how they changed. I can't wait for the sequel to come out. I heard that there will also be a prequel. I was just wondering if this was all true. Also, I am looking for the book and I wanted to know if the name of the first book is the same as the first movie because I know the second book is named "Blood Enemy" or something but the sequel will not be called that. But anyways. At first I was hoping the vampires would win until I heard the history behind the whole war between vampires and lycans. (Lucian and Sonya's story, which started the war in the first place.) It was pretty sad. Then I kept hoping Victor would get what he deserved for what he did. I wonder whats gonna happen between Selene and Michael. I just can't wait for the sequel this was an awesome movie

Those of you who doubt that the scientist was a lycan, watch the scene when he's explanning to Viktor what the Lycan's plan was...."even at the cellular level OUR species where destined to destroy each other.."

Posted by: Eli on April 14, 2004 08:08 AM

yeah he cant be turning into a hybrid, that is, marcus, because the scientist explained that he was a vampire. but perhaps... we dont know. and i think that is part of the genius of the film.

I think it is a cut above alot of the films i have seen recently which involve sci-fi or action, because not only does it contain powerful performances from all, but it also has a very intelligent and interesting story backed up by those involved, passionate performances, and stylish and intense action.

there were also many interesting and unexpected plot twists in the film, which was one of the reasons why i loved the film so much - we spent most of the movie seeing lucien as the bad guy, and viktor as the saviour, when in fact viktor started the whole war in the first place; and lucien was found to be alive when from the outset celine told us he was dead. there was alos a moment when lucien and the scientist was discussing micheal and lucien asked 'could he be a carrier' and the scientist says 'imagine what could happen to the vampires' or something along those lines, and i heard that and thought that perhaps micheals blood contained a VIRUS???

either way i loved the film for its great metal music, interesting action, involving performances, superb storyline and open end. i will look out for the book, and i am eagerly awaiting the sequel, and hope sincerely that it is as good as the original.

Posted by: garett on May 6, 2004 06:49 AM

Awesome movie indeed. Well, i really dunno about Marcus becoming a hybrid or not, but he wouldn't die just for tasting werewolf's blood, remember on the train, there were a lycan feeding himself from one of the council members, he wouldn't do that if it was deadly to him.

And, yes, Singe was a lycan. ;)

Posted by: Drakull on May 10, 2004 12:41 PM

I love the movie very much! I dont usually like vampire kind of movie, but this one is really makes me love vampires/warewolves. The story line is muchxx better than van hielsing btw.

Anyway, a bite of vampire doesn't mean the blood is transferred to the vampire same goes with the lycan, i guess. It has to be injected in someways. Otherwise Lucian who wanted to change himself into a hybrid, didn't have bring michael back the 2nd time to get his blood, coz he already "tasted" his blood in the first time. and therefore, Selena wouldn't get any blood (the hybrid/lycan's blood)from Michael after biting him in the last scene. She just transferred her blood to mike.

In case of the awakening of the elders, it is probably different. The blood is somehow transferred thro a device around the coffin. Altho during the awakening of viktor, it was clear that the blood drops to his mouth. And also i guess Marcus will be a hybrid after getting the blood from the scientist.

The Scientist could have been wrong about the whole Marcus was already a vampire, thus can't be a hybrid. becoz he never got a sample of Marcus blood, so he never tested blood from pure decendant of corvinus who already was a vampire can actually be a hybrid if combined with lycan's blood. And why Marcus never change himself into a Hybrid, 1st it might be that he didn't know about this thing, 2nd he would have betrayed the vampire kingdom should he turn himself into a hybrid. Should Marcus become a Hybrid in the next sequel, he would not be one of them anymore (Vampire)!

I agree Lucian would have survived and become a hybrid as well. In the scene when Raze returning with Amelias blood, the syringe wasn't broken eventho it was dropped. He might had injected himself with amelia's blood later on.

Well all these things are just my thoughts and opinions :) whatever happens, love this movie a lot ! PEACE !

I'll admit the movie was pretty good and all but the only reason i saw it twice was becuz when I saw Kate Beckinsale wich plays Selene in the movie i just fell madly in luv with her. And also in Van Helsing which was simialar to underworld becuz it was about vampire v.s ware wolf ecept it was more about special affects than costumes.

Posted by: bernardo escobio on May 13, 2004 02:02 PM

hi, um , i loverd the movie, but i kind of wish that sequal would really be a sequal!! i want to know what happens to them, and i think that marcus was changed, because at first lucian wasnt sure that michael's tranformation would work because he was so far down the blood line, so possibly marcus could be stronger because he's so close to his father..(if that made sense) anyways i liked lucian!! darn them!! I hated craven, liked him for telling selen the truth but other than that :P oh well later...

Posted by: Tiffany on May 20, 2004 09:01 AM

Kate Beckinsale was wonderful in the First One so it would really be cool if you kept most of the cast in the next one ,if any. I have always gotten disappointed with sequels because they almost never had the same actors, actresses,or graphics for each character. This trilogy will work wonders if it is created. I'd very greatful.

hey guys ... i have got to say that underworld is prolly the best vampire movie made!! Kate Beckinsale looked awesome ... but then again she looks good in any movie she plays in!! ... i went and saw Van Helsing the other day... and damn just when we think she's looking her best ... she's wearing that tight suit ... she's lookin good ... theres always something y about a woman kickin the out of a big bad monster. Plus she looks good in leather!! ... but anywho Scott Speedman was looking pretty damn good in that movie to but then again when dosn't he!!! he's a y beast!!

Firstly, I thoroughly enjoyed reading everyone's comments, and I really want to get my hands on the book!
About the dicussion of whether Marcus can or cannot be a hybrid is the most interesting. My thoughts is just that: What was Lucien's real motive behind finding the Corvinus bloodline. Was it to create a hybrid or make himself into a hybrid. After all, revenge is a dish best served by yourself. *grins* I would imagine that Lucien wanted to kill Viktor himself, and being a hybrid was the only means he knew how.
That would make Michael necessary, being a pure strain of the bloodline for him to inject. It probably contained a catalyst that Marcus's blood lost once becomming a vampire.
Also, if you think about, I can see the war being encouraged as a way for Viktor to keep something Sonja's and Lucien's love from ever occurring again. What better way to prevent inter-breeding then to have both the races trying to kill each other. Brilliant man he was *lol*
Another thought to ponder. Will Marcus be exactly the same as Michael in powers and appearacnce. Since the Corvinus bloodline had the ability to change and mold the virus to benefit themselves would each hybrid be unique. Just a thought. And I can't imagine the elder vampire awakening in a very happy state to find that he is suddenly part of a race that his own despises.

I can't wait until the sequel to see what happens!

I bought the DVD since I couldn't catch it in the cinemas, and absolutely loved it. Vampire movies aren't usually my choice but this movie really captured me with their concept of death dealers. Are they the coolest or what?
Imagine this: Ethereal-looking vampires who are called Death Dealers, with their well concealed weapons under that black leather coat, walking among us in the rain.
That's just totally COOL, right?

Posted by: aelly on June 14, 2004 06:52 AM

I think it's totally possible that Marcus could become a hybrid.

I know that everyone is talking about how he's 100% vampire already, but there would be easy explanations, like this:

The reawakening process is such that the subject is literally "reborn" and goes through all the stages of new life progressing to where they left off. They did show all sorts of flashbacks when Victor was being awakened. This would make it totally feasible that Marcus could be changed to a hybrid during his awakening process, and still let the logic hold that *living* 100% vampires couldn't be turned to hybrids.

Posted by: Groves on June 14, 2004 07:12 AM

Could Lucian have injected himself w/ Amelia's blood and possibly not died?

Posted by: S on June 17, 2004 05:28 PM

Oops! Sorry, I just noticed the comments above...bad habit reading from the bottom up.

Posted by: S on June 17, 2004 05:34 PM

I don't mean to be rude, but I think the fact that Marcus is a hybrid now has already been established. Taking the content of the movie literally and the book clearly informs us that Marcus awoke as a hybrid. The same goes for Singe being a Lycan. Sorry guys, I just had to get that off my chest!

Posted by: smoak on June 22, 2004 10:01 PM

Yeah but... If Marcus and Lycan (whoever he is) are from the Corvinus bloodline, then where does Viktor and Amelia come from? (Too bad she died btw, woah* she was **hot**, sure well preserved and she's got wild hips for a senior citizen vampire. One thing I didn't like though, the last fight btw Viktor and Mikey wasn't as spectacular as it could have been and it was filled with lousy punches even a myope could have seen coming 10 miles ahead, plus it didn't last that very long either. Were they afraid of Viktor's pacemaker to fail in the fighting process? Don't get me wrong I LOVED the movie but I thought the finale could have been way better.

Posted by: PJ on June 24, 2004 07:52 AM

I saw the movie and I loved it, I lost the count of how many times I saw it. I thing Shane Brolly (Kraven) was really good, he is handsome, and a good actor, so I really think that he has to be in the sequel, he is an important caracter for the next part. And for those who like this handsome actor, read his book.

Posted by: Jennie on June 24, 2004 09:22 PM

Singe CAN'T be a lycan. Otherwise, he'd be immortal and would have regenerated from Viktor's fierce punch.

Posted by: PJ on June 25, 2004 01:23 PM

If you have any questions about the movie, the book by Greg Cox really clears everything up:

- Singe is a lycan. He was riddled by silver bullets by Selene so that he couldn't transform into a werewolf.
- Lycans cannot transform into werewolves if they have silver in them or have been shot with silver bullets.
- Viktor (and the other elders) are the most powerful vampires and would also be stronger than lycans themselves. This is why Viktor easily killed off Raze who was one of the 'senior' lycans and why he was an equal match for the hybrid Michael.
- Marcus has become a hybrid (like Michael) by drinking Singe's blood. He is from the Corvinus line and is capable of mutating both the lycan and vampire blood.
- Remember Singe's important line: "half vampire, half lycan. But stronger than both." Expect Michael and Marcus to kick lots of %$@@ in the next film.

Posted by: Marcy on June 27, 2004 01:29 PM

People! news flash! Singe could have done somthing wrong and made a mestake abt marcus and the whole needing a pure bloodline or wtevr.at least that is my opinion. KRAVEN IS HOT!! HEY! leopoldo! i just saw the movie again and lucian injected himself with micheals blood!

Posted by: Krystal on June 29, 2004 08:13 AM

Hey every one,
I just stubled uppon this site and read some things that didn't make too much sence...

Yes, Alexander Corvinus was somehow able to mold a virus to his benifit; the black plegue was what the scientist guy said it was. And yes, he became the first true imortal from this. But this is where someone got mixed up. Alexander had TWO sons, not three. One son was bitten by wolf, another by bat, the other to walk the lonly road of moratily as a human? Well, that was lord Corvinus humself, as said in the movie, he WAS as Hungarian war lord.
Lucian and his Lycan followers were trying to find a pure sorce from the humans in the corvinus line. But they kept failing because it stayed in it's DORMANT form until it reached Michael Corvin, which I believe means he would have been an imortal human if the lycans havent gotten to him and changed him.
Also, Marcus is A DECENDANT of Corvinus, that doesn't mean he was one of the sons, remember, even Victor said it was a "legand", so it was ancient even to him, so ancient that it was only believed to be a legand to him and untrue. So, if this is a "legand" to the Oldest one of them all, then BOTH the sons have obveously died decades ago, or were still alive but unkown to victor and his followers because I believe this little double clan of vampires is still just a clan, I think there can very easily be more, they just don't know about them because they are so much in hiding that they don't even know about eachother.
So, for all anyone knows, Alaxander could still be alive and both his sons can be as well, but doubtedly alive if they would be THAT acient because they could have been killed by some kind of vampire slayers like some Van Helsing guy or there could be wars between vampires and lycans in other parts of the world and between other clans, there could even be wars or fudes between lycans and lycans or vampires and vampires.
So, the posabilities are endless. The only facts are, that Corvinus is the First True imortal, it was never mentioned that he was the ONLY imortal, so there could be more, and that he had only two sons, and Marcus and Michael are only decendants with the corect blood to fuse with both bloods.
Of course though, Marcus wasn't bitten, he was awakened with Lycan blood giving life back to his body, and it was only said that a BITE from both would normaly kill someone, taking of the blood could be a little different, and even if it's not, that still only means that the blood in marcus was obveously not dorment... It's as simple as that.

Come discuss underworld news at the new underworld forum

http://p069.ezboard.com/bnocturniaunderworld

Posted by: Striiife on July 2, 2004 08:41 PM

I love the part in the subway when Raze yells: "BLOODS!" when he sees the vamps.

I believe that there are only 2 methods of creating a hybrid. Procreation (Lucian & Sonya), and anyone containing a dormant version of the original Corvenus strain virus being bitten by BOTH a Vampire AND a Lycan. (perhaps Sonya was a carrier)

The hybrid capable carrier would be a vampire if bitten by a Vampire or a werewolf if bitten by a Lycan. They would only become a hybrid if ever bitten by the other species. This is never done because "no one has ever survived being bitten by both species."

Markus is a carrier, when he fed on Lycan blood he crossed over. One of the few beings that could.

Lucian injected himself with michaels blood so his body wouldn't reject the vampire blood, allowing him to crossover. I think he wanted the blood of a vampire elder for the racial memories it contained.

A final word on "hybrids". I believe they existed in the past. I think there is a name for these creatures....

Gargoyles

Posted by: Sinju on July 4, 2004 06:18 PM

Hey, I know this is kinda random, but does anyone know the name of the song that was being played in the credits? Like right when Marcus' eyes turn black, then like a few seconds later you hear this loud rock song...yeah, it wasn't on the soundtrack. :-(

Posted by: huhu on July 7, 2004 03:55 AM

Yo, was up everyone i just watched underworld for the first time an hour ago so i havent gone through it again and reasearched facts but i think its pretty clear that the doctor was a werewolf and that Marcus will be a hybrid, why would they zoom in on the same dead guy again at the end if it held no crucial significance (hope i spelled that right lol). Saleene and micheal are in love now and when viktor is killed it shows all the surviving werewolves going back into the shadows leaving them in peace, i think in the sequal in the on going war between the lycans and the vampires saleene and Micheal are ethier A)going to be neutral (atleast as neutral as possibal fighting for their lives against Marcus) or B) live among the lycans, i mean the lycans are probably afraid of the now hybrid Micheal as for saleen it seems she is on everyones bad side at least the lycans wouldnt touch her with micheal by her side. One last small thing what ever happen to the other girl vampire, the one that was jealuse of Saleen and wanted to be with Kraven is she dead, and if not i have a wierd feeling she might have an important...small but important part in the sequal. Just my thoughts....take em or leave em

I just want to add, if Corvinus was supposed to be a immortal, then where is he now? Immortals aren't meant to die right? And i believe Marcus IS the orginal son of Corvinus that is being bitten by a bat because vampires are supposed to be immortal so he should still be around, unless he was killed by the lycans. Bt i don't understand when they say Viktor is the oldest and strongest among them because what about the son of Corvinus that was bitten by a bat? Wasn't he the start of this vmpaire thing? So how can Viktor be the oldest?

Posted by: Schiffer on July 18, 2004 11:41 PM

What was the whole purpose behind the elder vampires lying dormant for some many years at at time?

Why do they skip through time as suggested?

These "dead" beings can have sexual intercourse and reproduce?

How does one become an elder or master vampire? is it just by age? Were Victor and Amelia the first vampires made by Marcus?

Posted by: Jacques St. Germaine on July 24, 2004 12:43 PM

jaques,
the elder vvampires i belive age slowley if they lay dormant. one vampire at a time is awake ruling a coven. amelia was ruling a coven across the ocean leaving kraven in charge of the main one. they probably have intercoures but are undead so there is no reproduceing unless they use humans. elder vampire are the oldest. viktor is older than marcus so marcus did not make him. im however unclear about amelia.
good luck, hope this helps.

I mean don't get me wrong, I love this movie...but I hope the second makes more sense.

I haven't posted in awhile, so Ram, if you get this im not dead or anything, lol. Yeah, underworld kicks ass, second one should kick even more ass. But i got pissed because only Marcus is left of the Elders now, and victor was the most powerful, and i thought the most badass........

Posted by: blake on August 27, 2004 09:36 PM

Marcus is a decendant of Corvinus. It never specifies that he is the original decendant who was bit by a bat. The fact that Marcus is a vampire does not mean he cannot turn into a hybrid (he carries corvinus blood in his veins)...I believe that the pure human strain was needed to enable lucius to make himself a hybrid ..(thats why he injected himself with micheals blood) and why he wanted the elders blood I forget her name. As for micheal ..yes he was already a lycan when Selene bit him...the fact that the injection was inhibiting his transformation means nothing...the fact that he began to change at all in the back of the cop car proves that. When selene bit him it could be that she didnt drink his blood(when Lucian bit him he didnt have to drink micheals blood to infect him so it could be that selene transmitted the vampire virus without ingesting blood although she was on him a while ...Also remember that lucius was having a baby with Sonya(Viktors daughter) so the whole thing about lycans and vampires not mixing might just be propaganda or error...well my 2 cents its late and Im a liitle incoherent gnight

Posted by: tony on August 28, 2004 10:00 PM

Gotta keep in mind blake, we havent yet even seen what Marcus looks like yet, so you cant make that judgement. For all we know, Marcus could be the far more powerful vamp as compared to Ameilia and Victor. As far as who was the lycan side of the corvinus family, i believe that is either Lucian, or an ancestor of him. If i recall, Lucian tried to turn himself into a hybrid, but unless he was a direct decendant of alexander corvinus, then this wouldnt work. Then theres the other question about the leapfrogging through time that the elders do. I think this is probably to keep a balance of power between the three elders so that no one elder gets too much power

In sceen 6 were they show Kraven close up standing by the window smoking a cig. The bottom right window pane there is a reflection of a boy. Has anybody else noticed this or I am just seeing things.

I don´t speek english very well, but it´s movie I like much. The history between werewolves and vampires is fantastic.

how could markus be a hybrid when he has not been bitten by a werewolf, i mean just because he drank some of the blood doesnt mean hees a hybrid, because if they just have to drink the blood that would mean that michael isnt a hybrid for he has drank no blood. Great movie tho any pics post them in please

Posted by: Jermaine on October 19, 2004 09:08 AM

hellow.. i loved Underworld and i would like to comment on a few things so here goes..

i think that Marcus DID turn into a hybrid because i saw his eye at the end of the movie and it was all black and that shoulda been proof enough.. but if it had to be specific on how he turned, i'd say the scientist's blood was mixed with his werewolf saliva because alot of the blood did come out of his mouth. so Marcus drank the scientist's blood/saliva.

also, Lucian could turn into a hybrid assuming that he was a desentdent of that corvenus guy or something but i think 6, 7 silver bullets would kill anyone, lycan or hybrid. besides, i doubt Michael Sheen would want to play as Lucian seeing that he was a former parter of Kate Beckinsale and she ditched him for the director of Underworld

Posted by: Peter on October 24, 2004 08:41 PM

I agree; The casting of Kraven was the worst part of Underworld1. Its not just bad acting it was a bad casting decision. Everything else in Underworld1 was excellent and would have gotten much better reviews had it not been for the acting of Kraven's character. I hope they don't make the same mistake again for the actors and the movie's sake.
I love Kate Beckinsale in the first Underworld Movie but thought her accent didn't work in Van Helsing which was also a casting mistake on Van Helsing.
Other than that I am really looking forward to a sequel with out the actor that played Kraven or at the very least make him go to sleep for a few hundred years and just show his casket every once in a while. When one actor can't act in one of the main character's roles it makes all the money, time and energy of a lot of people worth a lot less.

Posted by: Grogue on October 31, 2004 08:01 PM

There is no way that Markus will become a hybrid. Of course they always have creative license but due to continuity they should follow the scientist's statement that 'they needed a pure source'. Remember the scientist stating that Markus was already a vampire. Did anyone catch the acronym Viktor - Amelelia - Markus (VAM) ? I find that more that coincidence. Interesting to see the names of the successors, if any. Finally, everyone seems to be in agreeance that the guy playing Kraven MUST GO. I refuse to qualify him as an actor, just a guy.

Posted by: Frank on November 22, 2004 07:50 PM

Just to let everyone know, Underworld 2 is coming out on November 23, 2005. They cast Derek Jacobi to play Marcus so we'll have to see if he is a hybrid or what. So its less than a year away and i honestly cant wait

There should be a sequel, and one with the guy that was part lycan/vampire at the end.HE WAS SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HOT!!!!!!!!!!!

It's amazing how many people leave comments refering to 'that one vampire/lycan/hybrid guy.'

How hard is it to learn a name before you post?

Posted by: Aleena on December 10, 2004 03:28 PM

The Sequal is called Underworld:Evolution and it says that selene, michael,Lucian, marcus, viktor, soren, and a younger selene will be in the second one. which means lucian is still alive or he is just in the flashbacks. All we know for sure is that it will show more of what happend in the past, How selene bacame a vamp and what not. I hope Lucian is in the second one..... he played a good character in the movie, it is a tie between Kate and Michael(Sheen) at who did the better acting. I dont know about the guy playing marcus I forgot his name, but I have seen him in other movies and he is a good actor and all but I dont know about playing a vamp. but I guess I cant judge untill I see it. Tell me what all of you think.

Posted by: Unknown on December 20, 2004 03:09 PM

I've watched this movie over 40 times. I find the only thing that bothers me watching it is knowing that michael and selene will never really get so close. At teh end of the movie you expect a bit of affection, but most likely we won't see to much of that not even in the sequel. Kate's husband is the director and i'm sure that's awkward. Also the character who played lucian fathered kate's 6 yr old daughter and they only broke up a short while before filming Underworld. That's why you see very little of Selene and Michael allowing their desires to come into play. I'm so looking forward to seeing how they act in the sequel, I can only wonder what it's like to be an immortal couple. Khan has signed on for the sequel. He dies in the first one, so i think he is in the flashback scenes.I LOVE THIS MOVIE AND CAN'T WAIT!

Posted by: Maribel on December 26, 2004 11:37 PM

i think this movie is awesome!! i just cant believe theres controversy on whether marcus is a hybrid or not. did you guys miss the eyes?? and the werewolf blood seeping into his vampiric mouth?? if he wasnt going to be a hybrid, he wouldnt have woken up. i do remember the part where the lycan scientist says they needed a pure source. so what? whos to say it wouldnt have worked on an already vampire? i dont remember the lycan scientist saying it WOULDNT work on marcus. marcus is the direct descendant of corvenus just as michael is, therefore they both have the potential to become hybrids. michael already became one... so marcus can too. hello! the blood running down INTO his mouth and his EYES opening. those were without doubt lycan eyes.. jeez people!

Posted by: Tawsh on December 28, 2004 03:40 PM

lucian wanted michaels blood, and that of an elder (Amelia), to become a hybrid himself. mixing michaels blood with that of Amelia's would theoretically make it possible for lucian and or other lycans to become hybrids.

we never see Khan actually die... we see him get attacked, scream, cut sceen, and then gunfire. he may have survived.

Lucian may yet come back also, if the needles of Amelia's blood are injected into him, we saw him inject a serum made out of Michaels blood in the movie.

Any thoughts?

UNDERWORLD is so my 2nd favorite movie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've got a question. Who was that guy with the whips fighting against a werewolf? He looked like Kraven. Was he a right-hand man or something? What is his name????????? Tell me!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: sOmeOne on January 13, 2005 11:56 PM

The guy with the whips was Soren, or Zoren (I get the 2 names mixed up). He was Kraven's right hand, the one who was sen to "pick up" Amelia ect.

I love Underworld it's a brilliant film i was wondering, Does anyone have any pictures of Nathaniel and Rigel? They are the two vampires who are with Selene at the beginning of Underworld because i think they are so beautiful and sexy. Rigel was taking photos of the lycans then he went down into the underground station with Selene and Nathaniel was standing at the foot of some steps watching the lycans coming down them then he went down into the underground station to chase the lycans because he heard gunshots coming from the underground station. So if anyone does have any pictures of Nathaniel and Rigel could you send me some please? Thank you.

This film was FANTASTIC! Every review I've seen so far completely trashes it, which p'sses me off - they don't mention a single positive about it. How can you ignore Kate Beckinsale running around as a vampire shooting things? Kraven was slightly annoying (YES he's hot, we've decided that) becase he could NOT act. Apparently he's back for the sequel, which should open in early December 2005. Selene is 5'7", so Nathaniel and Rigel are about 5'10" - there might be some more info in the book about them. *drools*
As for the fight scenes, the Lycans were NOT CGI, they were real stuntmen in prosthetics, so no wonder tey were a little clumsy. I was laughing my head off seeing Viktor fight - he actually looked his 1400-year age, and his punches were AWFUL. Still, you have to give Bill Nighy his due for doing all of his stunts himself and acting so well in the Crypt. Does anyone know what the "23 minutes of new footage" are on the extended DVD?

Posted by: Francesca on March 6, 2005 02:47 AM

What happens when Michael (lycan-vampire hybrid) bites another? Are other hybrids formed?

Wouldn't these be even more powerful than Vampires and Werewolves?

Posted by: Joey on March 13, 2005 03:18 PM

Wow, I never thought of it like that......Good Question Joey, That is a hard one to answer, In My openion the people he bites will probly die, that is my theory.

Posted by: Unknown on April 5, 2005 04:30 PM

I've seen the movie quite a few times & I'm sure all our questions will be answered in the sequel. One question I haven't seen raised here is why are there no female Lycans? Is this explained in the book? Lucian said he was born into servitude as a daytime guardian of the Vampires. Wouldn't that have made his mother Lycan as well? My theory is that in Underworld's vision Vampires are not "undead" as they are in all other Vampire films, that is how Sonia could be pregnant & why Erica cast a relection in the mirror when she brought the dress for Selene. Remember, they are "immortals" this word by definition means LIVE forever, not remain DEAD forever.

Posted by: Bob on April 15, 2005 06:17 PM

I cant be bothered to read the whole of the comments so someone could have already aksed this but is that erika chick in the sequel. She wans't on the casting list but she might be in the flashbacks. If she is in it does she actually do anything important instead talking and jumping up onto a wall.

Posted by: trueblue on April 23, 2005 01:41 AM

Ah, sorry bout the spelling.

Posted by: trueblue on April 23, 2005 01:44 AM

Actually that question has been asked in another site, If there will be female Lycans in the second one. I think they should it would make a nice little twist.........There could be only one female Lycan like the mother of them all that sorta thing. But I dont know I am just throwing out suggestions.

Posted by: Unknown on April 23, 2005 11:43 AM

What is so complicated to understand about Marcus' eyes?

When Viktor awoke, his eyes did the same thing when the blood got to him at the beginning of the awakening. This is all there is to it. It's a part of the physical transformation or morph or whatever one would like to call it during the awakening process.

There is nothing 'telling' about the eyes regarding their bloodline.

Marcus is of the line of Corvinus - as Viktor stated.

Posted by: Vampf on April 23, 2005 02:45 PM

Like I said on another post, they mention a female lycan in the start of the second book so it is most likely that we will see female lycans in the sequel and probably in the flashbacks if we see lucians mother but i doubt its goin to be a queen of lycans kinda thing. Nice idea though.

Posted by: trueblue on April 23, 2005 08:53 PM

Hey It was just a suggestion, I have never read any of the books, I did not even know there were some. What are the names of the books and how many are there? Oh and where can I find them?

Posted by: Unknown on April 27, 2005 11:16 PM

There is two books, the first is just called Underworld and the second is called Blood Enemy. They are both by Greg Cox. Ive been finding them a little tough to get in Australia where i live but you might not have as much trouble.

Also for anyone trying to find the song from the trailer (how aewsome is it) and the theme music you can get it on the 'Underworld [Original Score] Soundtrack' (spelt just like that). This is NOT the normal soundtrack with all those random bands which i personally cant stand.

To finally clear up this how can Marcus become a hybrid stuff. First off I approached a chemistry and biology teacher about this and they agreed with me.

Now Singe said that they needed a pure source, untainted. Why? Well, remember they were planning to turn Lucian. Marcus had the Corvinus trait to turn hybrid, but he also had Vanpire in him. They were probably afraid that if they injected Marcus' blood into Lucian, the Vampire trait would kill him before Marcus' hybrid allowing trait kicked in. Not to mention it would be difficult to get his blood than Michael's since while Kraven was with them he had no knowledge of the plan to make a hybrid. Also, how could they take his blood? He's been living off the blood of his victims for centuries. When you become a Vampire you stop producing blood. That's why they need to drink it. He probably used up all of his long ago. So any blood they got from him wouldn't have the trait at all, just Vampirism.

Marcus was able to turn because while he is a Vampire already, he also already has the hybrid trait so he wouldn't have to worry about it kicking in. Also, they wouldn't have tried to make him one since he's a Vampire lord and he would still kill them all. He wouldn't stop hating Werewolves just because he was half of one.

Also about the reflections, mist, and turning into a bat... Well, you make a reflection in a mirror because light reflects off of you and to the mirror. This is also how we see. Light reflects off of an object and into our eyes. The only was to not have a reflection is to not have light reflect off of you. If the mirror couldn't reflect you than we couldn't see you. You'd be invisible. As for mist, that probably took hold because Transylvania has mist like any other place, and Vampires probably 'disappeared' into it before so people thought they became mist instead of hiding in it. As for the bat well, imagine compressing a person completely. Everyone know that something big can be squished into something small. But unless you use something like thoe things they use to crush cars, could you really squash a person's body to the size of a bat? I don't think so. That idea came from the fact that vampire bats drink blood so they thought it was a Vampire transformed not a mere relation. It really would be as if one of the bats in the area cought the virus and passed it on through it's decendants...

Hey pls. pls. tell me about Amelia I'm very confuse why she become an elder vampire, but she's really hot, her dress was very elegant. now I knew that the vampire are very elegant

Posted by: jomar on June 10, 2005 08:18 PM

the vampires and lycans aren't dead, Selene drowns in the movie and micael has to do cpr to get the water from her lungs so she can breath and to restart her heart, clearly defining the fact that she is a living being. I know it's hard to ignore previous vampire lore, especially if you've read Dracula that really does define the genre, but try to take each story and particularly this story at face value.
in vampire lore the reason vampires don't have a reflection is because a very long time ago people believed that a mirror reflected your soul and vampires being dead did not have a soul, therefore no reflection.
the guy playing Marcus in the next movie was a vampire in the second blade movie and it is confirmed that he is a hybrid and much stronger then Micael. so argument over.
the major problem though is how was Marcus infected by the blood entering his body through his mouth but Lucian isn't when he bites Michael. and niether is the lycan feeding on the train.
I accept the explanation of Selene not being infected, though it doesn't quite ring true.

other then that the movie was brillient and I'm itching to see evolution, the lycans were the best werewolves I've ever seen, in the past moviemakers have focused too much on haveing a wolf like muzzle and lots of fur, cutting the length of the muscle and limiting the fur made the lycans more believable and more frightening then any other werewolves because of the believability.

I really hope to see more of Michael Sheen in the next movie, I'm hoping he's not relagated to the 15 minute backstory and is an actual player in the developing story. he really is an excellent actor and bloody fit as Lucian.

as for Shane Brolly, I couldn't see his performance because of the terrible accent change that occured every half second, it was really off putting, the charecter was supposed to be english apparently, but the actor is Irish and couldn't pull the accent off, they should have just let him play it Irish, it would have simplified things and maybe improved the look of his performance.

Is Soren/Zoren (whatever his name is...) gonna be in the sequel???????????? Raze is cool. Definitely. So is LUCIAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He's the best!!!!!!! Kraven sucks! Hope he dies in the sequel. Why did Raze have to die in the first movie???? Is Lucian gonna live or not????

Posted by: sOmeOne on July 15, 2005 02:16 AM

Why do you all hate the actor who portrayed Kraven with such intensity? He is a good actor. Kraven is a very unlikeable person, and the actor showed that very well. You are not supposed to like Kraven, but that does not mean that the actor is poor at his job. Rather, the opposite.
Furthermore, to those of you bewildered by reports of Marcus, Viktor, and Lucien being in the sequel; how dense can you possibly get? It is obvious that they are going to have a 'flashback', a history of sorts. Read around; countingdown.com mentioned the 'historical' beginning to the movie, set in the dark ages. Five minutes of simple research with google could you save you from looking too great a fool...
The movie looks good. Let us hope that they remain as inventive and original with the sequel as they did with the original.

Posted by: Lotus on July 15, 2005 07:03 AM

You're all nuts.
Marcus didn't become a hybrid. He died.
The only reason he is going to be in the second is because it has bits from the dark ages, with Alexander Corvinus and the plague and all that.
His eyes went black in a different way from Michael's. More like he was dying.
I'll be proven right yet......

Posted by: Fifth on July 15, 2005 07:11 AM

marcus was not bitten by a bat.
absolutey impossible.
viktor said marcus was a descendant of corvinus not a child of corvinus. and viktor was supposed to be the oldest living vampire (up until he was killed, anyway, so marcus couldn't have been bitten by the bat. only the first was bitten by a bat, and that can't be marcus.
think about it

Posted by: anonymous on July 15, 2005 07:24 AM

Markus is dead you dumb people!
So many of you boast about how many times you have seen the movie; so what? Obviously you haven't seen it often enough or you would have noticed that when Michael's eyes turn black, they do it in a different way than when Markus's eyes turn black. Markus's eyes just fade away like he is dying. Singe said (in response to Viktor's "there is a descendant of Corvinus lying there...") that they needed a pure source, so so obviously Markus cannot become a hybrid. He is awakened because it is blood, but then he is killed because it is Lycan blood.
Do some research and take the time to THINK! Play devil's advocate with yourself before stating your view as irrevocably true.
I can't believe you people are even suggesting Markus could be alive. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Posted by: Jonathon on July 15, 2005 08:13 AM

Dudes! Okay, so Markus is dead...yeah, and the other people like Lucian and the rest won't be in the movie, just in the flashbacks. Okay, chill! People just wanna have their own views about the sequel...Kraven sucks, not the actor. Hey, isn't anybody discussing about Erika??? What's gonna happen to her???? Is she good or evil?
