Hmm...I've only seen one commercial for this flick, but I keep hearing about it from friends and reading about it in blogs. Color me ignorant :P, but what's up with all the hype?

Most of the hype is exactly that: Studio generated hype crafted to increase advertising and revenues. The movie has a strong focus market at a niche group of gamers, Goths and vampire fans that latches onto market devices with such fervor they are willing to invest a huge percentage of their earnings towards it. The studios know that and have been very deliberate in their presentation to maximize revenue. That having been said the end result has an appeal that I, like many others, have a hard time resisting.

I guess that if you were a member of their target market you would feel the appeal as well.

....yeah, I guess so.

well of course they would try to appeal to action movie, goth, and vampire fanatics. that is what the movie is based on who else are they gonna market themselves to? besides people in the movie industry know that only die hard fans are the only ones that buy figurines and what not.

the answer to "what's with all the hype?" is that it is KIND OF new concept (it's been done a lot in anita blake novels and white wolf paper games as well as movies ie: the howling) but with an emphasis on action rather than horror or drama. although it is being marketed as a Romeo and Juliet with vamps and werewolves, which is probably trying to get drama and teenager crowds flocking, i heard from a reliable source (someone that watched it in canada at the special premiere they had there) that the romance is very minimal and the action is very much emphasized.

personally i'm a huge vampire fan (lost boys, blade 1 and 2, bram stoker's dracula) and am looking forward to the movie. i hope they kick werewolf ass.

Don't count on it. Almost all the early word is that it bites -- and not in a good way. Even devotees of the genre don't like it. The Blade movies seemed to get a lot more positive word and they were both only mediocre movies, really. It appears, too, that the studio isn't letting that many people see it ahead of time. There aren't that many official reviews. I have a feeling that they don't want negative buzz and would rather just control the publicity all on their side. Good movies usually don't have to do that.

Whenever you have a studio refuse a movie to reviewers, that is usually a drop dead sign that the movie is no good. For more info on the early reviews see:

There was hype but they didn't want anyone to know how awesome this movie was, and it is, its a pheonomenal piece of work, and the sequal will probably have tons of already devoted fans flocking back to the theatre to see it over and over again, I've watched it three times already and I'll probably go see it again and again and again and when the DVD comes out I'll probably end up wearing it out. This movie has been packed solid for the last 3 nights at my theatre so its tough to get into it. MOVE OVER BLADE, BECAUSE THERES A NEW LEAGUE OF VAMPIRE MOVIES IN TOWN AND LETS SEE IT WHILE UNDERWORLD IS 50 MILES AHEAD BLADE IS LAGGING BEHIND. Homage to Underworld.

Well i have seen the movie, and personally think it was badass. contrary to the above comments possibly for the only reason you could think there was bad acting is because everyone but kate and like 2 others are no name actors! but they still did a dam fine job of Vampireism!! heh:P one thing i think is that critics should read the original books first, because if you did you would think that the movie followed the storyline, and just kicked ass! because it did! not only was there some nice visual effects Kate is just dammm hot! :P anyways its a good movie if you like action, drama, comedy, horror all in a spit wad and hitting you fast! heh... hey sarafeen could you send me that pic of amelia!??? sect0r@charter.net Thx!!

Ive been trying to find one specific picture and song actually, at the part where lucian has just been shot in the head and chest, and hes got his eyes all blue, with his shirt off and fangs out, facing the sky pushing the bullets out of his body, that parts so damn awesome, im trying to find pictures as hes pushing the bullets out of his body, and the song that he does it to, i cant find either, so id appreciate any help on this.. thanks

The movie was excelent. I just wish they hadn't shown the vampires to be so weak. Always running from the wolves. Throught the whole movie it seemed like all they could to was fall far live long, and regenerate. Slowly at that. But either way the movie had a good plot and was still awsome. Hope they make a 2nd one. Like to see how that guy fights the next vampire lord now that he's half vampire half liken. he in deep $hit now lol.

Ok now I had high hopes for this movie and I was really let down. The director tried to put too much into the movie and didnt concentrate on one point enough. And when Michael and Selene kissed for the first time it was very underdramatic because there really wasnt anything leading up to it. Also, the acting by Kraven WAS bad. Its not just because he isnt famous.
But I did think they portrayed vampires and werewolves very well and all the fighting and action was really cool.
One more thing though that bothers me. These vamppires have all become very rich from information in technologies and what not. Why then was Amelia traveling on a STEAM ENGINE in the 21st Century!!!??? Get a freaking jet.

i agree with the whole kiss scence. i think that it should have been a longer kiss, and at a different time. the kiss shouldve been at the end when selene is getting micheal out of the werewolves place.

but thats about it, the movie kicked a lot. hell of a lot better than blade.

The silver sports car looks like a celica to me and i think Toyota make them but i think im wrong. About that kiss scene i thought it was sweet and what i liked was the fact that all of you say it was at the wrong place. I hate it wen actors are talking and then you see them stop and look at each other and then youre like they're gonna kiss, i liked it the way it was so unexpected and the point it was at...she'd just saved him and went against Kraven and Viktor all in all i thought the movie rocked! I cant wait for the sequel! I loved the ending too! Kate has such a beautiful narrative voice, it just suits her character so much

Though shalt no disrespect the greatness of Guillermo del toro and the films Blade/Blade2.

Just seen the film, its fantastic in its concept ,the look, the action/carnage and of course KATE. But yeah the plot/story is a bit haphazrd. Still good though a most refreshing change of film than the usual 10 to the dozen cops 'n robbers crap films. The silver car is a Maserati 3200GT, drove one last year, and yes the back end slides out as easy as in the film. Roll on Underworld 2.

I loved underworld i saw it three times already, but most of my friends havent even heard of it! the best part was when kraven slipped off the ladder that was halrious i cracked up all three times!! micheal and selene were really hot! i so hope they make a sequel. i think the move was f*cking excellent, but some of the actin sucked. all the english actors did really well, specially kate (dint she look cool in dat leather? i want some) but y did kraven have to be an american actor? n offense u guys, cuz sum americans can do english but he definitely couldnt. i spent the whole film wondering who he slept with to get that part.

Hey guys. Alot of you talk about how it was a horrible movie, I think it was an awesome one. One of the best i have seen in a while. Blade/Blade2 had some really bad graphics, and i didnt like the story line. The other think i noticed about everyone here is no one is as amazed as me about the main character, I mean he is the only person to become both vamp and lycan. I mean thats the coolest think since sliced bread! I have been trying to get some pics of him to show my friends who havent seen the movie yet but i cant find any. First up let me just say Underworld was superb, i have heard some harsh reviews but ive seen the movie many many times and it is very good. So what if holes can be picked, its good fun and my GOD kate looks hot.

The reason by the way (shadow) that she says about the bite killing michael is because he was already bitten by Lucian. A mixed bite kills, the viruses clash - if only she knew he wouldnt have died but would have become hard nut abomination!

My biggest question to the writer if i had one would be why Amelia doesnt kick lycan ass in the train, she should have at least held her own against a fair few of them. Okay so i realise toe to toe a changed Lycan kicks most Vampire's to the dirt but not an elder, her age alone would grant her certain strengths.

Reading the novel now, keep ya updated if anything ultimatly cool comes up! Already i know for certain Marcus is an abomination like Michael, i couldnt help but read the last page when in the shop and it says he is definatly one.

Marcus is also used in Legacy Of Kain: Blood Omen 2.He is one of the Vampire's that betrayed their race to work for the sarafan. The charectors seem to be completely unrelated though, at least to me.

Also, the only problems that I know of to the creation of an underworld 2 is lawsuits from whitewolf publications (which I think is BS) and from an author named nancy collins.

we don't really get to see Amelia fight. I haven't seen the movie in a while, so maybe I'm mistaken, but we didn't get to se her actually get attacked, did we? or how many lycans? She could have had over a dozen of her simultaneously. Even victor couldnt hold off a dozen lycans attacking at the same time.

This movie rocked! i just got the Dvd yesterday and i have already watched it 6 times. One right after another. I can't wait for the sequal. I am also really into vampire movies. And by all means this is my favorite one ever! A girl kicking ass really rocks. So you go Selene! Kate Beckinsale Rocks!

I LOVE THIS MOVIE. The only downside is Kraven... He couldn't act his way into a childrens play. Other then him, I loved every minute of the movie. It was a great consept and story that was cleverly done. The wolves in the movie were awsome and I like the fact that the vampires in this movie didn't advertise what they were just based on looks as in movies like "Interview With A VAmpire"
I also see a bit of a hole in the theory. it was my understanding that the only way to start the hybrid chain was through the direct decendant of the original imortal. If a vampire bit a werewolf, are vice versa, they would die. How then could Marcus become a hybrid and survive? They need to clear up that little oops, unless I just misunderstood something.

Marcus is a direct decendant of corvinus viktor says that when the lycan doctor guy is brought to to him by selene. Thats how marcus can be come an abomination.

Lucian was my favorite character and I seriously hope they find a way to get him back. I can't express that enough. He's so good, and really a kind hearted person. It would have been nice to be his Sonja.

Kraven is friggin beautiful. especially when hes being really evil. he did a good job at looking the whole every-one-wants me-i-love-power-evil-vampire type thing.

I have to say this. One thing i love and hate about this movie. Raze's voice. On one hand it's pretty funny and you can't help but have a giigle to ya self . On the other it's just so shit and it doesn't suit him. Besides that he kicked ass.

Well anywho i was thnking aboot getting the Underworld soundtrack coz the music with the fight scenes was awesome. But then i thought all the music would be goth and i aint into that kinda stuff. Is it anygood and worth buying?

Well it is worth buying but alot of the songs like 3 or 4 of them talk about goth stuff but the rest are really good, it is more of a hard rock then a goth soundtrack, I bought it about 4 days ago and I really like it.

I have know seen Underworld for the 3rd time now!!! (i dont know what countries u guys are from but Underworld didnt get released in Australia til a few weeks ago).

It's an okay movie! I like the effects and of course, lovely Kate :) But werewolves walking on walls is a bit weird... otherwise it was great! ...obviously open to the sequel(s)... (no doubt)

underworld rocked, the ending was very dramatic setting up a sequal. we can only hope the sequal adds more to the story without taking away the environment as in matrix 2. Also the werewolfs could me altered a bit more to become more animalistic as in American werewolf in paris.
Over all i belive the film was original and hope to see a sequal out soon.

In my mind If they did ever put girls into the warewolf roll the Females should be bigger than the males! I was kinda in the middle about that I was watchin the movie and was on the Lycans side right off the bat, Before that I was kinda a vampier fan but i was always debating, This movie really set me off too be a Lycan fan. I am still debating rather Lucian is alive....that was a good reson 4 him too be, but yet...It seems far fetched but i Guess we will have to wait and see. I was impressed by luciens choice of weponrey, i belive the hidden sword was a great wepon for a werewolf. I mean when in lycan form the dude cant really fire a pistol can he?? Well anyway lucien dosent really have anything else to give to the movie other then being a mentor, and mabye a marytr to the lycan race.

U wanna start a discussion on what race was better, well it would have to be the lycans,not the vamps. the vamps are pussys without there guns. All they can do is dress smart and live for a long time. Oh and it seems that lycans can live long to so in turn the lycans are superior. Plus the vamps are little bitches with the infighting and backstabing. Anyone wanna challenge my view on this bring it on.

Okay Okay Lets not all get in a fight the 2 races are the best in their own ways, For ex. The Lycans are very good at hand 2 hand combat, And the Vampiers are good at Not showing fear and are always on the go to go kick some ass! The Lycans are very good at keepin a cool head Like when vamps are shootin they dont change untill the vamps are out of bullets and they are too, so they both have good ups and downs to the whole fightin thing and in a way they are both the same (IN A WAY!)

Well, looks like im gonna have to add some petrol to this fiery lil debate (seeming as though my opinion goes against the actually question of which of the 2 races are better).
I reckon that the humans would be the most powerful in the war. You may say that the humans are weaker than the 2 but think aboot it. If they were in the war both the vampires and lycans would slaughter them. BUT, the humans are far superior in population and when it's day time and the vampires have to go beddy byes there defenceless. And the lycans dont have as much manpower.

Very good Point....But i would still have to say they would win?........But if the vamps and Lycans and Humans Were all against Each other than....Oh Hell I dont know it is to confusin to say, There are Many Vamps all over the world you dont know how many there are and I dont know what to say about the Lycans, They also have alot of man power but They are so big it would be hard not too spot them!

i liked the part of the movie where michael and hugh were fighting over the crystalls. But the fight should definently have been longer. It sort of sucked that the fairies ended up winning. I like trees.

Hella cool movie!!! if anyone was still wondering, Amelia is played by Zita Gorog. She is an amazing Hungarian model. Her eyes were kickin'. Pictures of her dress would be much appreciated... the costume designer (wendy partridge) did an awesome job (except of course Kraven's sparkly shirt!!!... what's up with that?!?!)

According to an article from Variety the Underworld sequel is due to start shooting this fall. Len Wiseman will direct again and Danny McBride is set to have the script completed by early April.

Was I the only one that totally despised the desighn of the Hybrid? I mean....he was blue. He looked like Nightcrawler from X2! That's the only part that I don't like. That, and the fact that Viktor sort of kicked his butt at the end. Selene had to save him. That kind of took away his whole point in the movie. And why, exactly, does he have so few lines in that movie? I thought Micheal was suppose to be the second important character...person, type. Ah well, the movie still rocked. I really like the fact that it's so realistic. Movies like Blade don't really know when and where to use their computer graphics. The stuff in Underworld was done by stunt doubles and actual actors, not by an image on a computer, and that makes it a lot better than plenty of movies that I've seen. The portrayal of vampires and werewolves comes across very well. Once again, very realistic. Though the kissing scene is a bit out of place...there's really no reason that they should have at that one point. I mean...they had only met like three or four times before that scene. It would have been better at the end, when they stood for about two to three minutes just staring at eachother. I look forward to the sequel...in fact, I pray for it! This movie rocks, and I don't really get how anyone would think that the plot is incomplete.

The ending I thought was great! The reason why Michael needed help to kill Viktor may be because although he was a hybrid, he didn't get the blood of an elder. The blood of an elder should have made him the most powerful, but since he got Selene's blood instead that could be why he needed help. However, he was able to put up a great fight against Viktor by himself when you compare him to the other vampires and werewolves. I just wish the vampires came across a little more vampirey in this movie. I thought they could see in the dark, however in two separate parts of the movie they can't see at all at night. I've watched this movie at least fifteen times and I could watch it fifteen more! This movie is awesome! Was there a mistake in this movie with Kraven telling Selene that Lucian had no use for a human? It was when he was arguing with Selene, before she awoke Viktor. I swear he said the word, Lucian would have no need for a human or something like that, and that should have given him away right then. Instead we get the whole scene with Selene reading their history book to find out what actually happened. I absolutely love the part when Selene is thrown in the room by Kraven until she can be judged and she asks Kraven if Lucian cut his skin for him! Wonderful movie moment! I laugh every time I hear that part!
I would love to see Lucian come back in this movie too. He and Selene and Viktor were great in this movie. I thought they played their parts very well. I didn't get to hear enough from Michael. I thought he should have had more trouble with accepting what had happened to him. Can't wait for sequel!!

And i think the reason why Michael needed Selene's help at the end was because He was Tech. just born, think about it take vamps and Lycans a long time to become powerful Like Viktor or Lucian and if michael was just turned into a Hybrid and he was that powerful or at least powerful enough to put up a good fight with Viktor that over time.....WOW he will be one f***in POW-ER-FUL Dude do all of you fallow me here if you dont then let me know State it on the message board.

I thought the movie Was Great, Not alot of people can pull off the whole Vampiers vs. Warewolves, But he did, It was perfact the way he blended the Computer Effects in with the real thing, and did not use computer effects when he did not need them, Movies can do that some times. The Actors were also amazing, Kate beckinsale was very dedicated to her roll and did a wonderful job, so did Michael Sheen He was very....confusing But in a good way....You never know what he's going to do. I have been looking for a curtain picture from the movie Underworld; but I cannot seem to find anything close to it. I'm looking for a "Movie Still" of Selene and Michael during the end of the film. For those of you who have seen the film; I would like a "Movie Still" of Michael. After he "forms" back into his normal hot self. When Selene is picking the medallion up and she turns around all dramatically; to find him (Michael) all topless and sexy. I want a picture of that. Michael topless and sexy. I thought the movie was a little corny but I watch it over and over just to see parts like that. Heh. It's a girl thing. I'm a vampire-fan (I guess, my pseudonim shows it) and I really enjoyed this movie!

I loved this movie, it was great because it intriduced to me the concept of werewolves and vampires beating down on one another, the scene at the start were the nameless death dealer faces off against raze in the tunnel was awesome, if they had of shown a lot more of it I would be happier, I think that Viktor was the best elder vampire ever, his killing of raze was cool, amelia, played by Zita Gorog, was just DAMN fine, her character intrigued me and she is an incredibly beautiful woman, a few fun facts about the movie, it was filmed over the course of only I think 4 months, and the budget was maybe 27 million dollars, which explains why they filmed in budapest, just an awesome movie, I look forward to the next one were marcus and michael will face off, it brings something up though, will marcus be more biased in his appearance to vampireism, or will he be like michael, because of course michael was bitten by a lycan and marcus is already a vampire, it is a question that has been plagueing me for a while now, anyone know?or have an educated guess?

Let me just throw out my opinions here.

1) The werewolves look just fine. If they looked any more animalistic they would have to be called dire wolves.

2) Michael's hybrid form, no matter what you all say, is kick a**. And it's blue because a vampire's skin is very pale. Which in turn turns his normally dark hair, a lighter blueish-gray color.

3) Amelia wasn't powerful because she was basically only there for looks... All she had was elder's blood. But she never fought. Therefor had no experience.

4) Werewolves are the official vampire-killers. They exist pretty much to destroy vampires. That's why they're so much more powerful than the leaches.

Okay, So i have read most of the comments posted on this site and there are a lot i dont agree with... but I wont go there right now... I mainly wanted to comment on the last one made....

a) Dire Wolves and werewolves.. there is not much of a difrence... I think the lycans looked just fine in their werewolf form... the fur could have looked more real and the skin not so plasticy.. but apart from that they looked great.

b) The vampires pale skin has nothing to do with the hair colour michael has... The skin colour that is formed when the lycan and vampire races are crossed is blue because one of the races has fur and the other doesnt. The reason it is blue is because althought Michael is a vampire,the pale coloured skin tone crossed with the brown fur colour created a furless blue tone
(confusing but understandable)

c)Ok... Amelia must have fought at one piont to have gained the experiance to persue the title of ELDER. She must have had some sugifficance or they would have never mentioned her.. after all in the end of the movie it is Selene who crosses her blood with the Lucians blood that was enjected earlier.

d)If there is another movie... and Marcis and Michael have a face off they will both be part of the abomanated race... ya, know how selene who awoke Viktor by pouring her blood into him? Well at the end of the first (currently only) movie the scientist is bleeding on the ground and he is already a lycan... his blood pours down the holes in Marcus' crypt and Marcus wakes up... since the bloods are now mixed... he is a cross now too.

I know this entry was long but I just wanted to state the previous things... I have seen the movie 18 times now.

I love this movie.I'll admit, some of the things that the characters said - like when Viktor said, "Whats this rukkus" and pretty much every time Kraven talked - were a bit over exagerated, but The movie had a great plot and, I thought, cool effects.My fav character would have to be Lucian, allthough I love vampires, and It would definately rock if He came back.The theory of the Elder's blood is a good one, and it might just work. Besides, after all that Lucian went through, to die like that would be quite unfair.Oh well, we'll just have to wait and see if there'll be a second one ^_^.

Seen Underworld about 11 times now, have to admit itsa shame we never see Amelia in action, she could have kicked butt. Also does any one know where I can find pictures of Soren Kraven's bodyguard and Marcus in the last scene? I've got pics of most of the others just not them.

I just want to know two things. I want to know why Lucian was so much stronger than other Lycans if that age and getting stronger theory only applied to fucking vampires. And Id like to know why the abomonation was blue and why Viktor was still kicking his butt? The movie made no sense and they can rebound with a good part 2. They copied Blades layout too much.

Well, being vampires were white and lycans black...why not blue?
As for Victor being able to kick the 'abomonation's' butt, if you payed much attention, he was not bitten by an 'elder'vampire, but by Selene, therefore he is not as strong as they had expected him to be if he were infused with elder blood.
And of Lucian being stronger, he might have been the only 'elder' to escape. The others would have been killed in their cages if a war broke out...Would they not? They had been slaves of the vampires...
And about the 'vampire' theory of becoming stronger with age and not lycans, well, it's just how they were created. There are many 'types' of vampires and werewolves. That was just another 'type.' The whole werewolf being immortal is questionable also. But then again, the 'types' apply here as well.

I LOVE Kate`s teeth! I've been wearing dental acrylic fangs for a long time. I have many sets of different styles, but I'm running outta ideas for new ones. I dont know about all of you but the sequal is called Underworld:Evolution and it will show flash backs because it shows who will play a younger selene, and Lucian is in it which means he is either in the sequal or just in the flash backs. Give me some openions people.!
