"Donnie Darko" is getting a new theatrical release. Newmarket Films, which originally released the film, is unveiling a director's cut at the Seattle Film Festival on May 29. "Darko" premiered at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival and was released in theaters that fall. The new version will have 20 minutes of never-before-seen footage, new visual effects, and new music. After the festival, Newmarket plans to release the film theatrically in Seattle before moving into other markets later in the summer. "We felt like it was a project unfinished, and there is such a hungry audience for this movie," said Newmarket partner Bob Berney. "Darko" grossed just $515,545 at the domestic boxoffice but has since gained a following on DVD where it has grossed more than $10 million domestically. "Even though I am proud of the theatrical version of the film, I've always felt that the story was somewhat compromised in order to come in under two hours," said "Darko" writer-director Richard Kelly. "With this version I feel like I've finally been able to complete the film.

Posted by: Brandon on November 19, 2004 12:48 PMEvery Sunday I check the movie section of the paper and it has the poster of Donnie holding and ax with the vector beam from his chest and it only says "coming soon" I live in San Francisco California, and it hasn't come yet! We get all the indie films in San Francisco first, too! I'll keep you posted!
Posted by: Robert on August 14, 2004 08:51 AMThe Donnie Darko website says LA, New York, and "select cities." Whatever that means.

I'm thrilled that this movie gets to be put before the public again. I missed it the first time it hit the big screen and I've loved it on DVD ever since. The deleted scenes are going to be a special treasure and I'm going to take as many friends of mine on as many trips to matinees as I can afford just to spread the experience. BRAVO to the cast, crew, and creators: Thank you for this movie. :)
Posted by: Joseph Smith on July 12, 2004 01:17 AMIf you guys and gals go to www.moviefone.com, you should be able to put in your ZIP and find out when it's being re-released nearest to you and when exactly that will be. I tried for Central NJ and there is nothing coming out, even in our AMC 24 theatres. Bullsh*t huh?

Posted by: Supernovaspy on June 7, 2004 09:24 AMHey anyone know if there gonna re realese it in California cuz i really want to see the directors cut even though im sure it will come out on video well if u know please tell me thanx...
Posted by: REsa on June 3, 2004 01:38 PMactually, it's not "new" stuff. if you watch the dvd, it has all the outtakes in the extras, like the extended first scene with frank (which was hilarious, but i hope they don't put it in there), the scene where his psychiatrist tells him that his pills are placebo, and the alternate death scene that shows donnie gored through the chest by a rafter, very much like the vector he sees from his chest. i'm interested to see what they deemed worthy of a re-cut, considering the lack of very valuable information they left out in the last public cut.
Posted by: kackie on May 22, 2004 02:07 PMyeah i think this fucking blows.....just cause... i donno....i feel the 20 min...of unfilmed stuff..could fuck the abstractness(if thats a word) of the movie....i donno...im just upset about the re-release
