Season 5 of Angel to be the Last

[Movie News]

angel_season5_cast.jpg

Well it's official, WB has cancelled Angel in it's fifth season. Series creator Joss Whedon has been given notice that the remaining eight episodes of the show will be the last produced so any story arcs he wants to wrap up need to be taken care of now. In a reaction to the news Whedon posted at The Bronze that his heart is breaking and urged fans to mount a campaign to keep the show on the air either on the WB, UPN or any other network that will take it.

I just started watching season 2 of the show and so far it has failed to really engage me. If my experience with Buffy is any indication though once I watch another season I will probably be most upset that the series has been cut short.

In related news while looking for an IMDB link to Whedon I noticed the database lists Firefly (2004) as being in pre-production. I do not know what form the movie will take (Theatrical? Made for TV? Miniseries?) but it does seem to be a continuation of the very short lived TV show Firefly (2002).

Hey guys. My big concern is that we just realized in Season 5 that the Shanshoo Prophecy is about Spike, that is left completely unresolved with Angel ending abruptly. So are we now going to have a spin off of a spin off? Which would be fine with me cause I personally love Spike, the character is great. I think the studio should just carry on and make a sixth season to wrap everything up, we don't even know how the battle turned out in the last scene of the vary last episode this season. They should make at least enough episodes to answer these questions, its just so frustraiting, not knowing what happened to them and mostly Spike.

I feel that Angel has been cut short in what should not be its final season. It is the last show on that I truely enjoy watching. I just bought season five, and after seeing the final epesode of that season I am sad to hear that there will not be a season six.

I cannot stand the fact that everytime I get into a show it is cancelled without warning and it's always the same excuse not enough viewers and it cost to much money to produce and they aren't making enough from it. There was another show called Wolf Lake that I loved and tried to watch every week but couldn't because they kept taking it off for other things and it only lasted four or five weeks and then never appeared again. They put the shows on later now and take them off earlier and this year Angel was off for three weeks then came back and they was already talking about the seris finale I think that by them taking the shows off and then putting them back on weeks later people can't keep track of the shows and the lose interest because we get tired of hunting for our shows and when they are coming back on.And this just isn't the WB that is doing this it is all stations that is following these tactics. You lose viewers if they can't find their favorite shows every week. But that's just my opinion.Thank You

We all know that Joss takes care of his own, and he is out to prove it again. Gina Torres told a crowd gathered for Sci-Fi Slam in Pasadena that Whedon is working on getting David Boreanaz a role in the Serenity (Firefly) movie.

Buffy&Angel were excellent shows. When Buffy was over all I had left was Angel, and now they took that away from us too. I think it's a load of crap. Angel was doing fine, maybe it struggled a bit; but fans aren't going to care, it's to be expected. I sure hope that it's ressurected. If not I guess I'll just be pissed off. It's really too bad that there's nothing we can do about it?

David Boreanaz has expressed relief that his career as Angel is over. Details are at a short interview at Tv Week

Hello again, Leopoldo!

I got into AtS late in the game, same as I did for it's mother show, BtVS. I believe the loss of this show will be felt widely after it is gone as a glut of replacement reality shows start to give everyone a large case of brainburn.

Rumor has it that AtS was dismissed to make room for the new Dark Shadows remake series (or even the remade Lost in Space), Also, the execs have stated they need timeslots for re-airing of other higher rated fare. What that fare is is not germaine to this issue.

For the first time in 7 years, there will be no new Joss Whedon shows on the air, only in reruns or the DVD collections. Does this mean there will never be another Whedon show? Of course not. But the wait may be in excess of 2+ years at the earliest.

What worries me, and perhaps should worry every other genre fan, is the way things were done to AtS and what the WB execs believes is a winning formula for a TV show. First and foremost was the format change for this season - mostly stand-alone episodes on a drastically cut budget, and with increased humor. Not the dark humor that was the core of the earlier seasons, but much lighter humor infused in a darkly thematic series. I have researched this issue and several writers who have worked on TV shows have either stated directly or in a round-about way that serial shows (where episode 1 must come before episode 2) always do better than stand-alone shows (pick an episode and run it). What was forced on AtS seems now to have been the death nell for the show as it has too much backstory to simply ignore.

Lastly, since the show was reworked for this season, why was it only given 1/2 season to make the transition and bring in new viewers? On the surface it appears the execs wanted Angel to reach the magical 100 episodes needed for its higher profit afterlife in syndication. One also wonders why the execs (who must have known AtS was to be cancelled) would spend the time and effort and money to get AtS on a recent cover of TVGuide magazine. If not to help hype the show, what then?

AtS wasn't the best show nor the worst. At times, it was extremely witty, darkly humorous and mature in its approach to storytelling. Which makes its departure all the more puzzling to me.

So, when whatever the next show is that takes this time slot starts to whither or gets cancelled, I think we should remember what was lost when AtS was put into its grave after this season.

Kudos again on your site. I do try and visit often, but you know how it is.

Cheers,
TW

There are a couple of petition movements underway to save Angel. While I doubt online petitions or letter writing campaigns have much potential to be effective interested parties should visit: http://www.buffy.nu/article.php3?id_article=3258 and http://www.petitiononline.com/ai5d0162/petition.html

so i haven't been hugely thrilled about this season yet, and the ending of last season made me hope this season was going to be a lot better. still, given the amount of money which gets thrown at absolute schlock, tv is better w/ angel than without.

Although this disheartening news doesn't come as much surprise, I have to say that - as much as I like Angel - it's better to have a series cancelled in fine form than to have it die in ignominy, i.e., a Star Trek series that will go nameless. (And no, I don't mean Enterprise.)
