Grease (1978)
[1 - Pretty bad]
I was curious to find out what made Grease (1978) so popular that a lot of people consider it a classic so I rented it with high hopes. I really should have known better. As I have mentioned before I really do not like musicals. I ended up fast forwarding pas the songs by Olivia Newton-John and spent most of the movie looking at the clock and wondering how much longer I had to go. I thought the dancing during the dance competition was top notch, but otherwise I did not find much of value in this movie. And oh yeah, does anyone actually believe that ANY of these 30 year olds are in high school?

Posted by: Sara Koopman on September 3, 2003 08:57 AMAs a Gen-Yer I have to admit that I barf at the very mention of this movie. Although this may be a bit unjust as i've never actually seen it, fortunately for my intellect.
Posted by: dyingofluv on September 3, 2003 03:10 PMI like musicals, but I'm decently tough on them. eg, I don't like many favs like Sound of Music or My Fair Lady that much. I can live without them, though I don't mind them, really. Some like 7 Brides for 7 Brothers or South Pacific just make me want to scream. However, other I really enjoy and love. Singing in the Rain is deservedly a classic, eg. I also really enjoy less traditional musicals like The Blues Brothers. And, I like Grease. In fact, I own it. To me, it's about 4 things:
1) A deceptively simple story about young love that comes across quite authentic and approaches meaningful issues about relationships.
2) John Travolta's and Olivia Newton-John's charisma. That opening song "Summer Lovin'" has so much excellent energy.
3) Stockard Channing's honest portrait of a teen slut.
4) Fun: The songs are fun and the gags are fun, including an exciting Ben-Hur car race.
Sorry, Leopoldo, but you're just plain wrong on this one.
Posted by: Nick on September 11, 2003 03:50 PMGrease may '*approach* meaningful issues' about relationships, but it certainly doesn't come across as particularly authentic. And insofar as true cinematic brilliance is concerned, it falls far short of the mark ... All the fun, dancing, and singing in the world can't redeem this meaningless caper. Grease is aptly titled.
Posted by: heathcliffe on September 12, 2003 09:31 PMGrease was a great movie, I loved it. And I would half to agree with nick on this one. Grease is a classic, the music, he dancing, it all fits and belongs in the movie. If this were not a musical, I couldn't see it being as good and great as a classic as it is. The singning gets the audience to join in a sing along, making it more enjoyable then withought it, it is the songs and singing in this movie that makes it so populare and there for a timeless classic.
And wethere or not the actors/actress's are a bit older then they should be shouldn't matter as much. For even today there are a hole lot of movies that question the age that the character should look and is no way compatable. If you are to criticize on film, why not criticize them all.
Posted by: tears_on_starry_night on October 18, 2004 06:22 PMPersonally I have only liked a few musicals. It is not really my thing listening to people chirping songs and try and act at the same time. But I have to admit Grease is one of my favourite films as
1) It is indeed a classic and doesn't get the appreciation it deserves.
2) The amount of effort that was put into that film, the gruelling dance routines,Olivia Newton John having to wiegh 6 stone in it and had to eat very little. Even if they are older they were stylists working there arses off to make them look sweet 18
3) THe music and Acting that was put in it with every might and will. By the actors and everybody behind the scenes.
I grew up with this film and I hav prob watched it about 800000 times and more. Its like marmite you either love it or you hate it. i have to say I love it.
Posted by: Aphrodite on October 30, 2004 06:23 AMit is so good at frist so sayings like flog your log make no sence but after listing to it much more u get to mean what they are saying and I'm only 13
Posted by: Carla on April 23, 2005 11:18 AMGrease is a feel-good movie. Movies don't have to be intelligent or thought-provoking to be worth watching. I'm 14 and the T Birds and Pink Ladies are still icons. It's not one of my favs but I'd definitely want my kids to see it, coz it's popularity made it a classic. You just gotta know about Grease - it's the word.
Posted by: Fizza on May 25, 2005 12:52 PMI have always loved Grease, it is the only musical that I have ever loved. To tell the truth until recently I never noticed it was a musical. I think most adults read too much into the movie, and should just enjoy it.
