Dog Soldiers (2002)
[3 - Enjoyed it]Writer/Director Neil Marshall proclaims in the DVD extras that Dog Soldiers (2002) is "not a werewolf movie with Soldiers, but a Soldier movie with Werewolves". Whatever. This slash-'em, bite-'em, shoot-'em-up guns and fur fest is nothing short of an exhiting pretty well made B flick. Dog Soldiers has a squad of six soldiers in the Scottish highlands being hunted by a pack of werewolves under a full moon. The soldiers are armed to the teeth and the werewolves regenerate their wounds: you do the math. We all know exactly what will happen, who will die and in what order from the beginning of the movie, not that it matters. The action is fun and exiting throughout. My favorite scene is by far when the squad's bad-ass "spoon" runs out of ammunition on his G3 rifle, tosses it aside, puts up his dukes and starts taking punches at the snout of his nine foot assailant. Probably not a date movie (I guess that depends on who you date) but Dog Soldiers is definitely worth renting for the next time you host a Werewolf movie weekend.
Dog Soldiers better than most american films and does far better than crap with your big hard american softies

Posted by: wardy on September 27, 2003 06:07 PMDog Soldiers, finally got to see it but sadly had to take the DVD back to the rental store. Soon enough I'll have my own copy. Aye I will, Werewolves in Scotland yes, by oath I will. Then I will watch it again and again and write a Film Review on it. I enjoyed it far more than ever expected. These guys must have had so much fun doing this film. Great Brit' humour, the creature creation was good, especially considering the budget. Not only that it was refreshing to see a film which didn't pound you with CGI. And a film were soldiers were the focus and we had some quality military advisers in the background. The sorts of antics soldiers get up to was all in there, the tactics and teamwork, and of course, again, the humour.
Here's one of those rare films I knew I was going to love even before seeing it. Sure enough, Dog Soldiers was a major hit in my opinion. Haven't had such a great laugh since I don't know when. It wasn't a comedy in the strickest sense, nor was it meant to be thought provoking (OK I admit 'what would I pack if I knew Werewolves were on the prowl?' did come up a couple of times... to what I answered, my trusty SLR, or mister G3 thank you very much.) 9mm at even 800 rounds per minute just doesn't cut it for furry bipedals. It was all about pure entertainment. It wasn't trying to be anything - just good fun and an exellent film done on a budget. Regards the last point - it rated far higher than many with the big dollars and the grand special effects, and rubbish acting which seems to typify many movies these days. Suits for the Werewolves? Yes. The classic approach, no lazy technology here, and very well done. Same as Predator, same as Aliens. Two fine films which still rate top in their class. And I do agree - this was more about the soldiers, teaming together to fight a foe, just a different one than they ever expected, considering they were out on a routine Ex. Much more about that than the Werewolves themselves. An enemy that just wants to chow down, and some lads who just don't wanna be eaten and have the firepower to press the point.
And the word 'squad' must sound cooler than the word 'section'. So much for it being a pointer to been a hit in the US. It wasn't given a chance on the releases over there. Real shame, cause the Americans are screaming out for this film. I can see the likes of Amazon doing a real trade on this beauty piece of cinema.
Some decent extras on the DVD as well, including cuts, and interviews. If you want pure entertainment, rib ticking laughs and plenty of lyconthrope action, I highly recommend Dog Soldiers.
A sequal I'm actually looking forward to... Dog Soldiers II : Fresh Meat.
Posted by: Leon Harrison on September 27, 2003 11:45 PMWerewolves scare the ever-loving sheeyit right out of me, and have ever since I first laid eyes in that classic adacption of a book called "Cycle of the Werewolf," Silver Bullet. Then I saw "An American Werewolf in London," and even though I was well and truly terrified- I was only 9 at the time, mind you- I was also hopelessly hooked.
So when I sat down to see what sort of second- or even third- rate crap the SciFi channel was about to show one September night, I was stunned by a movie called "Dog Soldiers." I saw the first run, then sat through an episode of the outer limits to catch the red-eye replay at 0100 hours, just so I could tape it. I was thoroughly impressed with the action, even though some scenes could have been better (why does Spoony jump on the couch when he throws the grenade instead of just ducking down next to the wall?). The "editted for TV" version was not very editted at all. Blood, intestines, gore and flying dead frickin' cows are abundant in this film. It seems to me that they only cut out the overt swearing and left nearly all of the British barbs in place, just to piss the FCC off.
Admittedly, the wereolf suits DID look a bit... well, like werwolf suits, but it really doesn't matter, because you don't get too much time to get a really good look at the monsters until the last ten minutes of the movie.
If you follow the cult classics, watch this movie and prepare to laugh. There are all sorts of homages paid; there's even a guy in the flick named Bruce Campbell.
Horror fans will love it. You intellectual types will hate it. But everyone will more than likely agree that as far as werewolf flicks go, this one has just claimed the heavyweight title.
Spoon should have lived, This much I agree. I nearly said f%#& when, the werewolf grabbed him by the neck. At that I thought he was going to survive, with that frying pan scene. As the other person posted, " LONG LIVE THY SPOON! " ( Spoon was cute....had to get that out of my system. I wish I could send this to him - Abbers, The 1# Fan? )
Posted by: Abbie T. on October 19, 2003 05:47 PM'i hope I give you the shits, you fucking pussy'
you just don't get lines like that everyday
Spoon was very funny. The film was excellent nuff said.
The Score of the England game that one Soldier continually refered to was England 5 - Germany 1
Posted by: Wolven on November 3, 2003 11:37 PMdog soldiers is an absolute cracking film, full of action, laughs, and scary things that r supposed 2 b werewolves but r actually men in badly designed costumes!!!but that aside the film is absolutely brilliant.spoons is absolutely cracking and an absolute babe,if there were plenty more like him in the british army,i would be very happy!
Posted by: sandie on December 21, 2003 03:19 PMthank you AbbieT for mentioning the frying pan scene. I just bought the DVD (in the UK) and ... guess what's been edited out.
Can anyone confirm whether the US version has it in?
I thought the movie was awesome and I think Spoon is really hot. They did say he would be a sex symbol for women. As for the werewolves i think they were pretty cool. They made them animatronic because they wanted you to notice the actors more than the wolves. When they are computer generated you focus more on the wolves than the people and they didn't want that. Theymakeyou fall in love with the actors. Like spoon, total hottie and funny guy. Joe, funny and loves football; and his favorite word is bone. Terry the cowardly lion; i loved it when he puked on ryan. You just love hating Ryan. Hes a jackass. You didn't really get to know Bruce so you don't feel that bad for him. You can never forget the seargent. (When he died i wanted to cry; i love him:( He is funny and he cares for his team.
My favorite lines:
Joe:" we either stay here and snuff it...or we go..and snuff it"
Terry "Dogs...more like pussy's"
Spoon:"I hope I give you the shits you fuckin wimps"
Ryan" chasing after that first kiss are we Cooper?"- When Cooper and Megan have a little close time together.( I wished they kissed)

Oh sorry i keep talking but i had to say this. Spoon doesn't jump on the couch. That was Joe. Spoon stays up against the wall when he throws his. But close enough. I thought it was funny when the werewolf grabbed the gun from Joe and fired back LOL.
