TNG: The Big Goodbye

[Trek Talk]

There are two things I particularly enjoyed about TNG: The Big Goodbye. The first was seeing Crusher in a 1940s costume. She wears it well. The second is the concept of a race with a very complex and meticulous language that demands they be spoken to with full lingual decorum. I thought the series was more willing to innovate on how aliens may look or behave in the early seasons and I really do wish they had kept this adventurous spirit. I know that adventure equals risk and risk is not a word that the people putting up money for the show want to hear, but it was the risks they took that made this show stand apart from the others.

What about the Children of Tama, in the episode Darmok? That was fifth season.

Good catch. That 5th season episode was also quite good and felt to me like it recaptured some of the spirit the series had in the first couple of seasons and that dwindled later on.

I like risktaking but it can sometimes degenerate into the ridiculous, like in this episode (or at least I think so). it's the classic quest for New adn Different Aliens, but goes a little too far. Also why would the Chief Engineer need help from a fifteen year old to get them out of the holodeck?

Oh yeah, as for the holodeck, this is like the first of too many holodeck glitch ones. For Original it was the transporter glitch; for TNG it' sthe holodeck.

But as far as the '40s stuff goes, it's great. i'm a big fan of lit from that period. And yes, Crusher does indeed wear it well (better than Troi would if she were there)

Oh, yeah, this is a really good episode. I love the holodeck, so it's always so cool whenever there's a holodeck scene in an episode. And jsut for the record, Geordi did not *need* Wesley's help. Any other engineer would have done just as well, but for Pete's sake, it was Wesley's mother who was stuck in there. And obviously, he knows just as much about getting malfunctioning doors to open as any of the other engineers whose mothers aren't in there. Otherwise Geordi wouldn't have had him helping! Does this clear up your confusion?

no not really

Geordi understood that Wesley knew just as much about opening malfunctioning holodeck doors as any engineer, and also because Beverly was stuck in there. *Now* do you understand?

The most annoying thing about this episode is the stupid guy who wants to shoot everyone, Felix Leech. (and he's aptly named. I cannot stand leeches)

I am pretty sure that Leech is supposed to represent Peter Lorre from Noir films:

Yes, I was aware of that. But why did they have to pick the name ofa species of what are possible the most completely revolting creatures that have ever existed(leeches, y'know)?
