The Truth About Charlie (2002)

[1 - Pretty bad]

Some sort of morbid curiosity about how Mark Wahlberg (a.k.a. Marky Mark from the Fuky Bunch) would interpret the role made famous by Cary Grant in the original film Charade (1963) made me want to at some point watch The Truth About Charlie (2002). Stuck in an airplane over a five hour flight to New York I got a chance to relieve my curiosity. The result was a feeling very similar to the flight: I was stuck for two hours watching a movie wondering how much longer it would take to end.

Don't get me wrong, I think Wahlberg is a decent actor (he did just fine in both Three Kings (1999) and Boogie Nights (1997)), but honestly there was no chemistry at all between him and his co-star Thandie Newton who gave a simply flat performance. Then again, I don't know that either of them stood much of a chance given the flat and lifeless script they had to work with. I honestly don't know what director Jonathan Demme ( The Silence of the Lambs (1991), Philadelphia (1993)) was trying to accomplish with this utterly uninteresting treatment of what should have been a fascinating story.

There is nothing in this movie to make it interesting, entertaining, or even worth watching. The only good thing to have come from the two hours I spent on The Truth About Charlie was enough awareness and a curiosity to rent the original classic Charade.
