Underworld (2003)

[3 - Enjoyed it]

uw2_2.jpg

To say that Underworld (2003) has style is a bit of an understatement, however calling it a good movie is a definite overstatement. Poor acting, bad timing and a weak script undermine what is otherwise a very beautiful and enjoyable experience, which is really rather too bad because it makes it hard to give an endorsement and recommend the movie. If you do go to see Underworld, I recommend that, as I did, you check your expectations at the door, ignore the movie's weaknesses and just enjoy the high-fashion action.

uw2_6.jpg

High-fashion is not a term I throw in lightly, there were moments when the movie felt more like a gothic fashion show than a dramatic event. It seems I was not the only one, after the show one of the first things my companion asked me was 'which of the dresses did you like the best' and not only did the question not surprise me, but I had thought about it enough to have an answer ready (the answer by the way is the one that Sophia Myles puts on for the formal party and does a great job of showing off her beauty). Similarly the beautifully adorned cape Viktor (an Elder and powerful vampire) wears, the battle suits worn by the Deathdealers (vampire shock forces), and the tight-rubber and corset number that Kate Beckinsale has on throughout the movie all provide beautiful eye-candy and give the movie a strong steam-punk styling.

uw2_9.jpg

The fashion is not limited to clothing, the streets of Prague and Budapest, where the movie was shot, appropriate use of low and blue tinted light and very well dressed sets all work together to set an effective mood. The battle scenes on the city streets are effective in giving the impression of an ancient war that rages through the centuries occasionally pouring out of tunnels and dark alleyways to disturb the lives of the ignorant short-lived mortals that occupy old Europe. The tunnels and forgotten sewers where the Lycans (werewolves) hide convey the violence and infamy of the lycanthrope gangs who live day by day barely a step above their bestial cousins while the lush and elegant dining halls of the nosferatu give away the conceit and corruption that herald the downfall of the vampire clans. From hanging chains in the werewolf interrogation room to a vampire research library illuminated by Victorian oil lamps and a laptop computer the props work to set an atmosphere and add to the story, probably not surprising since first time writer/director Len Wiseman's previous professional experience was working props for Stargate (1994) and Independence Day (1996). This is precisely what makes the movie both enjoyable and a failure.

under6.jpg

The first time Selene saunters past the assembled throngs of bourgeois night stalkers lounging in the castle's anteroom I prepared myself for the potential confrontation the warrior could have with her comfort seeking brethren, a confrontation that never materialized. Aside from a few poorly executed scenes with Kraven where the leader seemed more impotent and whiny than conniving the clan proved to be little more than props themselves: thin, pale and beautiful preter-human accessories draped over antiques to give it just the right look and feel. Among the vampires Erika is the only one that seems to show any indication of depth, purpose or motivation, and even she is relinquished to a role of slinking around looking for opportunity for self advancement like a scavenger watching a fight to see what piece of meat she might be able to make off with. Every character that is introduced with potential for creating interesting conflict for our protagonist falls flat and either stands by as the action (note I did not say plot) unfolds or is relegated to some two dimensional actors limbo where there is not else to do but deliver the lines as written. The supposed love between Michael and Selene seemingly appears out of thing air when the couple suddenly kiss in a scene completely lacking in chemistry. Worse of all Beckinsale herself is given little room to breathe life into her character and delivers a performance that is flat and lackluster.

uw2_11.jpg

It requires some effort to set aside the underdeveloped story and the lackluster acting for the mostly flat characters. If you are willing to do so, I say pay matinee prices and let the look and the action of Underworld entertain you for a couple of hours. It may not be a great movie, but it is one hell of a piece of eye candy.

This movie is great! I just love Kate Backinsale's acting. She is so real! It was like she was actually Selene. Not just the acting, but the directing and effects were great too! And the music was rocking! Can't wait for the sequel to come out!

when michael is in the car changing, there are some sound effects goin on when they show the moon and i think its part of a song........and its not worms of the earth because i have that song. can anyone help??!?!?!?!

Posted by: Jay on April 26, 2005 06:42 PM

The reason they are in the sequal is because it shows flashbacks of the battle between the vamps. and Lycans.
Marcus will be played by Tony Curran, He played Rodeny in "Flight Of The Phoenix", and Skinner the invisible one in "League Of Extraordiniary Gentleman".
Alexander Corvinus Will be played Derek Jacobi
Which played Gracchus in "Gladiator"

the song that is on when michael is transforming i'm pretty sure is "worms of the earth by finch" the song in the trailer is "red tape by agent provocatuer.
the model of guns selene uses is berettas,Rigel uses walther pistols,Raze uses a sub - machine gun,And trix( the lycan from the subway selene chases him to sewers.) uses a desert eagle.
hope these are helpful:)

Oppsy spelled Lycans wrong. Never really saw it spelled before and looked above at the previous post. Mistake corrected!

Awesome movie if you like vampires and... Likins? hmmm well I always heard of them being called werewolfs so this was a new term. I enjoyed the ending very much so as two races of creatures joined as one as we should endure in the human race. I'll stop there cause that could cause some turmoil to some people as their eyes aren't open enough to see that we should all be one. hehe

Posted by: Nautilus on January 31, 2005 09:43 PM

Vampires rule!! that movie is great but sorry guys vampires rule werewolfs " Lycans " that movie was what can I say hmmmmm damn good!! up there with the blade movies and interview with the vampire although the movies Based on the Anne Rice books are way off and cut to much out -shakes her head and sighs- to back they are good books and would have been great movies if they had followed the books plain and simple

Posted by: nightmareangel21 on January 12, 2005 03:49 AM

you cant say that the acting was weak! all the actors made their charactor believable. the performances mightve been a bit cold but this is a dark and cold action movie so its not fair to determine an actor's abilty to act with a movie like this. some peeps are dissing the guy who played Kraven but they dont know shyt.

sry Leopoldo but i thot Matrix 2 and 3 sucked and it did NOT have the intelligence or depth of the first movie! i thot it had alot of weak points (*coughs* Keanu Reeves) but i just saw it for the special effects. Blade was way too much of an excuse to show violence and gore. It prolly didnt even need a vampiric background and coulda made an almost identical movie out of street gangs. i havent seen crow so no comment on that. well.. these were just my opinion on some movies so plz dont hurt me! >

I love the Lycans.. but bad that Lucian never get transformed into a werewolf..the vampires are īkind of gayish

i thought underworld was ok but it had too much of a gothic feel 2 it

Posted by: Gunz Blazin' on September 9, 2004 10:34 AM

i thought underworld was a great movie. i rented it and watched it like 7 times through like 9 days. i dont really think they should make a sequel it might ruin the first mivies story well thats just my apinion mabey if they make one it will be better then the first one i dont know. I thought all of the actors did a really good job. My sister didnt think is that good of a movie she thought it was weird that suddenly kate and scott kissed and it was complicated for her to understand.

Posted by: selene on August 31, 2004 08:28 PM

i loved underworld its my favourite movie. It had alot of great action in it. They made it so there was some interaction between kate and scott and i liked that. I also liked how they made you think that viktor was good but he was bad. I really enjoyed it. For a rating i would give it 8 out of ten

Posted by: sam on August 31, 2004 08:19 PM

I thought the movie was good but it was a dicrase to all lycan movies the way they looked was bad as a lycan I myself would know

Posted by: Josh on August 26, 2004 03:58 PM

I dont really care If Underworld Took Ideas from other movies, they did a better job at it and it made alot of cents, I dont like vamp films that are stupid and all the plot is is the Vampires drinking blood then they die at the end? what is that all about? At least this Vamp movie is telling a story that seems Logical. alot of movies dont. Movies Like Blade And Queen Of The Damned I liked because it told a story that was not too far fetched.

Underworld is a great film, I don't actually know how you can say bad stuff about it. Maybe it's just you Americans thinking 'Oh well it's British it must be crap' but you lie! You lie I tell you!

It has some really good actors in it, both American and British. Bill Nighy played the part of Viktor really well, he is a great actor, it may be a different role from his part in Love Actually, but he still plays it well.

I saw Pearl Harbor a few weeks ago, I only watched it because it had Kate Beckinsale, and I wasn't that happy with her performance in that. In Underworld she rocks. Is it just you guys thinking 'Oh a guy could have played a better part?' It's nice for it to be a lead woman.

Now all you guys are talking about Kate Beckinsale being eye candy, she is very beautiful woman. But there is some eye candy for the girls as well, such as Scott Speedman and Shane Brolly.

The comstumes rule in this film, they have a gothic style which is usually assosiated with vampires. I love the gothic style, it really makes the film.

Underworld does have a different approach to vampires. I have read many vampire books and seen many vampire films, and they all have a different approach.

Someone asked what the name of the piece of music on the trailer was, I know most of the songs because I have the sound track. Do you what? They missed the best song off the soundtrack, you know the one where Micheal is in the police car changing into a lycan. I love that song, it rules.

A lot of you are saying Underworld took ideas from other films, well they all do that now. They just take a few ideas and change them to suit their film. We all take ideas from other places. I do it, when I write my books.

From a teenagers point of view it is a kick arse movie.

Ok Ok, let me get this strait, Kate broke up with Michael or Vise Versa I knew that, And I knew that she started dating Len Wisemen But I had no clue that she is engaged to him! wow.....thats crazy....But on the good side Michael is single....or is he? Does he have a girl that I dont know about? well any ways I still cant get over that...But I am happy for her though, Good for her.

Posted by: Unknown on March 5, 2004 12:29 AM

I liked the movie. I thought it was good, but then again, the only thing it takes to please me is some cool monsters. The werewolves. The Werewolves made the movie for me. The kissing seen was pathetic, but that is okay.

Does anybody know when the sequal is goin to come out? Is it sometime late this year? Or sometime Early next year, They better hurry up there have been no GOOD movies out latly that are worth seein, For me that is!

Posted by: Q on February 9, 2004 02:04 AM

There is going to be a sequal to the movie every one has talked about it at one time or another, i have seen people talk about it on here. It is going to be about the history of the Lycans and vampiers, and not their future, well some of their future i think, so to answer your question yes there is going to be a sequal.

Posted by: Farie on January 29, 2004 05:47 PM

um well first of all i think there should be a sequel to underworld like for say underworld 2
well thats it thats all i have to say
by the way i like underworld and because i like it is cause i'v always wanted to see a movie where vampires and lycans fight for freedom

Posted by: silaz on January 29, 2004 01:23 AM

I loved this movie.

I bought it on DVD about a week ago just on a whim (I originally intended to only get the Hulk DVD, but I spotted Underworld on my way out and figured I'd pick it up). I neglected to see Underworld while it was in theaters due to all the bad reviews, and I wasn't expecting anything fabulous when I bought the DVD, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Even disregarding the plot (which I felt was good but not great), the characters and world were enough to draw me in for no less than three repeat viewings.

I couldn't really picture Kate Beckinsale as a gun-toting vampyre heroine going in, but she really fits the role perfectly (or maybe it's just the black leather catsuit that fits HER so perfectly). In any case, I'm majorly crushing now.

I also like how Les Wiseman reinvented vampirism in a scientific light as opposed to the fantasy mumbo jumbo we're all familiar with. I know quite a few people complained about Underworld's vampyres having a reflection, not being able to morph into bats, Selene saying that Michael "saved [her] life", etc, but I really prefer that to the nonsensical religious mythos surrounding them. I mean, can someone give me a scientific reason why a vampyre WOULDN'T have a reflection? And can someone honestly say the movie would've been better if Selene could turn into a bat and fly around?

Blood sucking, super strength, uncanny agility, immortality; those are things I can realistically see a virus causing. Not casting a reflection and being able to transform into a bat/mist; that's just hocus pocus.

Now all I need is for Rachael Leigh Cook to be cast as Selene's younger and available vampyre sister in the sequel and I'll officialy be an Underworld fanboy... ;)

I have good news for all you Kate Beckinsale fans. You enjoyed her as a killer vampire in Underworld (2003), now take your first look of her as a vampire killer at the GeekRoar Van Helsing gallery captured from the just released Van Helsing Trailer.

Posted by: Leopoldo on January 18, 2004 09:29 PM

I alsa thought this movie was amazing, the look and feel of this film reminded me of another favorite of mine, The Crow. All this talk about a weak story and timing I don't see. I actually enjoyed this one better than the Matrix sequels (not that I didn't like them just not as much). The wire work I found to be better (Alot smoother and believable) and my favorite thing was the lack of CG replacing real people. No matter how you put it, you can't replace real actors with CG ones yet, it's just not life like enough ie Matrix sequels. I can't wait for the UnderWorld sequels!!

Posted by: JP on January 17, 2004 09:55 AM

I LOVED Underworld!! I thought it was a unique twist to the traditional movies about vampires. The story was quite original. I enjoyed the performances of all the actors except for Shane Brolly (Kraven). I thought he was the weakest link.

As far as comparing Underworld to the Matrix films, I think it's like comparing apples and oranges. Besides, the last 2 Matrix installments didn't come close to being half as good as the 1st one, nevermind the fact that Keanu isn't half the actor that Kate Beckinsale is.

Bottomline: I thought Underworld rocked!!!

personally, i LOVED the film. maybe ppl just expected too much from it considering it has a great trailer full of artistic style, action, and unique story. i was appalled after seeing the trailer, yet the curiousness led me to anticipate for the film (since i am deeply interested in the supernatural & sci-fi stuff). And i still loved Underworld! I'm proud to say it! i don't care about the bad reviews it has gotten (and is till getting). Though i know it's not a perfect movie, it touched me in the most surprising of ways and made a good impact on me as a movie lover. i would still be utterly willing to see this movie again if chance permits me to. Also, i just LOVE kate's character, style, & acting in this movie. and she's way more gorgeous than trinity. :)

so, if there's any1 here who feels the same way, i would be glad to chat w/ you about how great this movie is. i'm utterly excited about underworld's sequel and whatever comes after that :)

Frankly, I was in no way surprised to discover that this movie, well, was significantly lacking in the quality department. Shall we say. Any flick involving a stretch-leather-clad Hollywood chick storming around battling against the odds is bound to fall short, particularly if the aforementioned chick's last name is Beckinsale ... So, I would only recommend this for those able to suspend their growing disbelief in lieu of gawking at Kate's rack, which I guess is after all not a whole lot to ask of your typical viewer. Doubtless its opening success can be attributed to these qualities.

I thought this was a great movie,it might'nt be as technical as the matrix or as cool as the crow but i think it still kicked ass!I thought the plot was good but not very strong but I heard there's 2 more underworld films planned a sequel first then a prequel which might fill in the gap's this movie left out,but weather thats true or not i dont know.
I think Victor's costume was one of the best in the film, there has to be a sequel,we never even seen some of the characters that are mentioned.Maybe it will have a bigger budget & deeper characters, but all in all i enjoyed this film.

Hey Nick. If you are going to want to see it, you may want to catch it in theaters, just for the 8.2 surround sound and full resolution Beckinass. As for a relative placement to similar movies:
The Crow - Not nearly as good as. The Crow not only had style but it engaged you, made you care. Underworld does not manage that.

The Matrix - Funny you should ask. Something I did not get into in my review is how blatantly they stole from the Matrix. I mean whole shots ripped right out. Once again this has neither the style nor the intelligence of The Matrix.

Blade - Now that is a bit more the scale.. though once again I think Blade did better than Underworld did. Blade did not have any great acting or writing in it, but it was more coherent and had a better sense of timing.

Leopoldo, you might just want to add ***SPOILER ALERT*** or something like that to comments that give away stuff. That way you don't have to delete it.

Well, now I'm torn. Should I go just for the cool factor? If I were a kid again, I'd just sneak in to a second flick. I have a feeling, though, I'll wait for the DVD.

Where would you place it relative to other similar movies like The Crow, or The Matrix movies (especially the second one), Blade, etc?

i loved the movie. it's not perfect but that's not the point. it's entertainment, and i definitely felt entertained. good eye-candy, good plot that made sense to me...

I have already had to delete two comments that made specific references to events near the movie's end. If you have seen the movie and would like to talk about it, please have the common courtesy to not ruin any of the plot for those who have not seen it yet.
