Lacenaire [The Elegant Criminal] (1990)

[2 - OK]

elegant.criminal.jpg
Set in the early 1800s Lacenaire (1990) tells the story of a well educated and gentlemanly criminal on his way to the Guillotine for murder. Flashbacks are recounted by the editor and publisher of his biography to his childhood thieving, getting in trouble as a school kid, his military days, and various affairs. Daniel Auteuil gives a great performance reminiscent of his role in Reine Margot, La (1994). At the end of the film, however, the viewer is left with that feeling that French cinema is so adept at creating of 'so, why do I care?'

I never said it was that good of a movie. The remarkable element to this movie was the discrepancy between what was actually said and the subtitles. It was genuinely entertaining to reconcile the two.

The actor Daniel Auteuil was also in A heart in Winter (un Couer en Hiver?) I believe. Gave a solid performance in that as well.
