I Robot
[Movie News]Filmjerk.com has posted information on a new I, Robot movie in production. Here is a taste:
This motion picture (most recently revised by Akiva Goldsman, dated January 31, 2003) will concentrate on Detective Del Spooner, who, with the aid of psychologist, Dr. Susan Calvin, will investigate the death of Dr. Miles Hogenmiller, a brilliant scientist who worked at US Robotics.
Posted by Leopoldo at March 11, 2003 10:24 PM | TrackBackLooks questionable. Director is clearly unproven. Writer is up and down. And if they've chosen Will Smith, who knows what their intentions are for the movie. He can do good work, but usually when he's chosen they're thinking Bad Boys meets Independence Day.
Posted by: Nick on March 16, 2003 12:04 PMPlease, respect Isaac Asimov.
He was one of the most important writers of all times.
Well Said Norberto, Asimov was one of the greatest science-fiction authors ever.
He deserves better than a movie that only relies on (reasonably)big names and SFX to make it.
A good story is one that moves people and makes them think- What if?
The story in A.I. was very much in Asimovs moral universe. It was very misunderstood and under-rated, because people are too lazy to think for themselves; they want easy escapism.
I hope Nick is wrong about this one ;)
Posted by: Dark D'Jinn on April 3, 2004 03:13 PMFrom what I saw in the trailer they're completely abondoning the story, and only using the names of the characters.
A.I. sucked because it was over done and dragged on way too long. It overexplained its morals.
This movie will be a terminator rip off in my estimation.

Posted by: Trevor on April 28, 2004 01:54 PMPlease, please, please dont screw this movie up! Great books are better read than ruined in mediocre movies ..............
Posted by: John on May 12, 2004 01:35 PMYes, looking at the trailer they are taking certain ideas and the title and making a conspiracy/action movie. We could be wrong about the trailer, but studio tendency to give away endings and show everything that is going to happen in previews makes me think we aren't. Rather than a single rogue robot it looks like the robots are part of a plot to take over.
Of course the book, as written, was never going to be a major "tentpole" summer movie without a lot of changes. Maybe they could have made a BBC or sci-fi channel TV movie, but a feture film with big stars was going to be more action driven than Mr. Azimov would ever want. Makes me hope they don't discover the Foundation series.
Posted by: Trevor on May 18, 2004 05:51 PMYes there will big big special effects and there will be huge computer graphics.
But perhaps because Smith's character is not Elijah Bailey but some other plainclothesman "they" may be using the Azimov universe and adding a new story beyond the last, Robots of Dawn.
Or, perhaps "they" will incorporate several of the robot story lines to give Azimov's worlds a new twist.
At least we can only hope.
Posted by: nathan on May 25, 2004 01:07 PMI became dubious as soon as I noted that:
1) The lead name wasn't Mike Donovan or
Gregory Powell.
2) It was a murder mystery.
3) There's an "I told you so" aspect to it.
Even if it's a good movie, this isn't
"I, Robot" at all.
I agree with Trevor regarding the movie studios discovering the Foundation series. Isaac was always one of my favorite writers and I sure hope that I Robot (I've not seen the trailers)is at least somewhat true to Isaac's story. As well as Robbie, the robot.
Posted by: Martha on July 7, 2004 09:39 PMYou got to be joking!! This movie was awesome!
The mystery, the action, the technology, the dreams leading to prophesies almost it was so cool and wicked BEST MOVIE I HAVE SEEN SINCE THE FIRST MATRIX MAN ALIVE AND STILL IT was PG that was awesome everyone can see it! Give the author of the short story credit and the director for making it so cool and yet not over the top like some futuristic movies that just aren't believable! This was truly an underrated movie that desirves so much more! :)
