Please don't murder our beloved Starship Trooper genre. It had to make a decent profit at the box office and it's one of my favorite movies! I don't want to see it be degraded to a B flick! Please get some support and make a real "A" sequel! It deserves this! Not a waist of effort on "B"oredom .

Alas, the rule of returns is golden in film-making. What makes for a good movie is not nearly as important as how much money a production may make.

OH MY GOD, I JUST SAW THIS TODAY, I WILL TELL YOU THAT I AM THE BIGGEST STARSHIP TROOPERS FAN EVER!!! I SAW IT IN THE MOVIES 4 TIMES IN THREE DAYS!!! AND WHEN IT BECAME AVAILABLE FOR RENTING, I RENTED 4 TIMES FROM ONE PLACE, AND THEN SO MANY TIMES AT ANOTHER PLACE, THAT THEY ACTUALLY GAVE IT TO ME. I LOVE THIS MOVIE, AND I HOPE THE DIRECTOR DOESNT RUIN THE NAME FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVENT EVEN HEARD OF IT!!!!

Personally, i think that as long as it is as good as the 1st and Johnny D Rico is just as cool it dont really matter, one thing more make sure there is someone as funny as Ace Levy in it again :D

Whoo baby! I'm very keen to see ANYTHING Starship Troopers 2-wise, low budget or not. I'd read the book before seeing the first film and was pleasantly surprised by the subtlety of the humour and the quality of the action in the film (the book is fairly grim & reactionary)- the only thing that was missing was the notorious powered battle armour of the novel - any chance that we'll see some armoured action in the sequel? Will the black humour of the first film be retained? And when's it due for shooting/release? Any chance of some concept/design art?

Just in, the official cast list for the soon to be shooting "Starship Troopers 2" - and yep, that's "American Idol" starlet Kelly Clarkson as one of the leads.Those that have got the nod to star in the Phil Tippett sequel are; [in alphabetical order] Billy Brown, Richard Burgi, Kelly Carlson, Cy Carter, Sandrine Holt, Ed Lauter ["Cujo"], J.P. Manoux, Lawrence Monoson, Colleen Porch, Drew Powel, Ed Quinn, Jason-Shane Scott, Brenda Strong ("Red Dragon"). The film begins shooting next month in LA.

That Brenda Strong from "Red Dragon" is the same (wonderful) actress who played Capt. Deladier in the first "Starship Troopers". She was killed near the end of the movie, though. I wonder if she is coming back as the same character or as a different one.

Good Catch J. L! I had not noticed. And yes, it is odd that they are bringing the actress back after her character was killed. Makes one wonder if ST2 will take place after the first one. I actually knew Brenda from a guest spot she had on Star Trek The Next Generation in an episode called 'When the Bough Breaks'. I heard its going directly to dvd, and those kinda movies usually suck. they should have tried to get the sci-fi channel to run starship troopers 2 as a mini series like they did with dune

I am a huge starship trooper fan and for me 2 hear that they are making a low budget straight to DVD movie just pisses me off. The sequel should have been made 2 years after the first one. Hearing that Kelly Clarkson is going to be a lead character is juts offending.

Ok, I've been waiting since the year 1997 for the sequel to come out. Its 2003 now, a sequel is in the works. Who the F put Kelly Clarkson in a damn Sci-Fi epic movie?! Sad to say this whole thing smells of one more cheap rip off. Heinleins books are worth more than this. American Idol unknown as lead? Duh,,, what else can they do to turn ST into a cheap T&A ripoff?? For anyone that has not seen the Animated series Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles it is well worth checking out. It feels as though this animated series will be far superior to ST2 anytime. The Chronicles is very good stuff. Only problem is the greedy b. . . tards who hold the license on the last of the series wont release the ending of the series. Which leaves all us fans of the Animated Series in the lurch without any closure. This straight to DVD low budget dog and pony show funded by Sony sounds like a bad deal all around. I AM A Big Fan of STroopers. But this will get a big old pass from me.

Well I am a big fan of Starship Troopers too, great to see part2 to come out... however the low budget part really sucks! I`ll see it anyhow but i think that StarShip Troopers univers with its unic really Goverment system will be changed, reason... democratic system even now fails in the real world, and the National Socialist system shown in the movie shows how good and stable it is. So i think basicly that the part2 will be CUTout of MANYYYYYY things, the only parts that will be left are .. ships,some troops in blue shorts, and maybe spiders....few of them anyhow..

Basicly isnt much to wait for..

Starship Troopers 2: 'Jon Movie Man' was on-set of the sci-fi sequel and has this exclusive report with all sorts of plot spoilers: "It takes place 5 years after the first movie, the opening scenes are of the propaganda commercial stating why you should join the Federation Troopers, lots of scenes of Troopers running and then a scene that is a copy of the Iowa Shima Flag Lifting. Immediately cuts to planet Zulu where the troopers are surrounded on a cliff by bugs and they are blasting away and are told to retreat. Nearly ¾ of the troopers are killed as they retreat towards an abandoned military base. They arrive at the base and get no response from the Federation when they ask for evacuation and pick up, meaning they are stranded there. There is also a subplot that the bugs have engendered a virus that infects some of the troopers and the bugs are trying to get the infection to go all the way up to the heads of the Federation. This virus turns it's victims into Zombies of sorts"

You know, I never did like the movie much, but I am a bibliophile. I always have to compare the way a movie is made to the original book. I have an original edition of Heinlein's first printing of the novel, as well as two other copies that I read.

Go get the book! It's even better than the movie.

Oh, and as to what prompted this post.. The movie ends in much the same place the book does, except that Jhonny dies in the book, assaulting a bug hole.

I just hope that powered armor and jump suits make it into this movie, as they should have in the first!

this is in response to calmiche on May 28, 2003. Juan Rico doesn't die at the end of SST (novel) while taking a bug hole! What book are you reading. As a Third LT he assaults a bughole, gets knocked out, and his team takes a Brain Bug, but Rico doesn't die! How could Rico die if he's the narrator right up to the end? What, he's writing it from heaven?

Also, I think this movie is a disgrace, its like T3, its nothing but a cash cow. The book was never meant for a sequel, and I think creating a low-budget sequel to the movie (which was a crude representation of the book) is a disgrace. Robert A. Heinlein is rolling over in his grave at what you have done to his novel.

This is troubling news indeed. When I first heard that there was to be a sequel I was so happy, I had been waiting for this for 6 years now. How unerving it is to see that it's gonna go straight to dvd and not make a cinema apperance. Low budget, no name actors, straight to dvd, it doesn't look good.....

Its disappointing that this film is given a low budjet considering the amount of money that Sony throwns at worse films. I personally enjoyed SS1 and was hoping they would have made a sequel. Its a shame they waited so long and are not bringing back any of the original cast members.
I would have loved to see Denise Richards to play the same role as Dina Meyers. That would have made for a great shower scene.

wow.. to think my excitement has completely subsided when I found this was going to be a low budget movie.

I don't get why they can't get some of the old actors back onto the set, considering that SST 1 was filled with unknown talent. Casper Van Dein still makes low budget movies as we speak.

also the startshiptroopers2.net site says a Kelly Carlson will be casted in the movie, not Kelly Clarkson from American Idol.. so all hope is not lost yet.

plus the director was responsible for the special effects in the first movie, not to mention other movies like Jurrasic Park.. so the movie just might be in good hands. sad that it isn't getting the attention that it deserves.

Starship Troopers 2 is set 5 years after the first movie, so it's not surprising that they are using new guns. Also, during the FedNet add at the end of the first movie, they say something like "We have the weapons", and you see a trooper blasting something with a huge gun. I don't think that's the same gun they are using in the sequel, but the idea is that weapons are improved with time.

I have the feeling the new guns have more to do with a smaller budget than the new timeline.

You may be right, Leopoldo. However, if they wanted to save money, they could have used the old weapons from the first movie. (I mean, I don't think they were auctioned to collectors like other props). Besides, when filming started I read somewhere that producer Jon Davison was very happy with the new weapons, or something like that.
Anyway, what I really wanted to tell you is that I've just found a (posible) release date for the movie at filmreleases.com (updated yesterday): It's May 5th, 2004, the same day as WB's Starsky & Hutch. No word on wether this is the date for a theatrical release or just the announced DVD/VHS release.

Dammit yeah! ST2 will be a favourite no question. One thing i noticed about the first one is "who really are the good guys?" If you look close the psychic guy's rank bars on his collar are the same as the ones worn by the nazis during WW2 (an unsuccesful sequel). Sinister eh. A second rate "B" movie that isn`t even going to the cinemas, isn`t going to have any of the characters from the first, isn`t even going to have the same amazing special effects and probably won`t be recognised as a film connected to another.

We all hoped and dreamt of seeing the same characters (espically Denise Richards!) from the first in a huge spectacular that would dawrf the first, we thought we would finally see the "mech warrior" like battle suits and battles like those out of "starship troopers roughnecks" but on a large real life scale. What we`re getting is a piece of crap about some squad getting trapped on some insignificant planet way out there.

My only hope is that they make enough money from this one to consider making a spectacular Starship Troopers 3

I just checked out the SST2.net site. Maybe I'll give the new film a chance. A few of those actors have been around for awhile ("Captain Dax" [oh c'mon now, I think ST:DS9 when I hear that! Couldn't they come up with a different name?] is the dude from the TV show "The Sentinel") Ed Lauter (from a whole bunch of movies) is on their as well. We should keep an open mind. If it sucks, then oh well. It never happened. Just like there were no Highlander sequels. They were just a nasty rumor and a bad dream I had. And as most of you probably know by now, that's not Idol Kelly Clarkson, but a Kelly Carlson, who's looks kinda hot in those promo shots. Hot chicks in uniform...I can dig it! :)

You know, I read the Dominant Species comics. Did you know that Rico changed it from Rasczak's Roughnecks to Rico's Raiders? If they do make a Starship Troopers II, it could still be cool as a PG-13. What this movie needs though is the powersuits! The suits of mechanized body armor that enable troopers to lift boulders, leap over buildings, and carry gargantuan weapons into combat.

Starship Troopers w/o powersuits is like Superman without his cape, costume, and superpowers.

If they can't give the MI powersuits. The at least give them tanks, armored vhelicles, 50 foot tall battlemechs to fight alongside with. And give the troopers laser weapons to slice through them bugs.

I have seen the new 1 minute trailer and new photos on www.starshiptroopers2.net and the movie looks great!!! also paul verhoeven was very much involved, tippett was constantly consulting with him and he even visited the set.
he coudn't put his credit because of obvious reasons.

I have seen this movie and it's great! Actually a lot more intersting than the first one. The first one was more for kids, this one is for adults. It obviously had smaller budget but the effects are great. I think it's the best direct to dvd ever.

Although the first movie left me with the need to stick Doogie Howser with a shiv, I liked this movie better than the first.
However, in my view, its more of an episode in a TV show than a movie. I'm reminded of the cartoon series "Roughnecks". But then, given a small budget, I didn't expect an epic journey.
Since it was a movie, I did hope for a few new bugs (even "Roughnecks" intoduced at least one an episode).
Overall, I think the movie was a good start for the director. Unlike the first film, this was more suspense driven than action, which I felt had potential. However, the hints were too glaring and much of the possibility was stolen.
Some of the nude scenes would have done better to use suduction than sexual attraction, but all were still appreciated ;-)
It would have been interesting to watch the bugs mistakes as well as successes in suduction and ambush.

Thats soooo stupid! They should have just gotten different directors. Strait to dvd movies suck it BIG TIME! This movie is gonna suck ass, it would only be good as a major hollywood picture. I dont get why people hated the first starship troopers. It did horrible in theatres but I LOVED IT!!! now this piece of crap comes along, just greaaaaaaat!

Is it just me, or is everyone had they're brains sucked out by that big rubbery thing at the end of the first movie? I have to admit i did actually love the film the first time i saw it, but i was eight and haden't adjusted to the go-go 90's. It was stupid. Any political satire or references to WWII were completely lost in the film against the needless special effects that only served to cheapen the experience. And now theres a sequal? There is no god.

I want to know if they mention anyone from the first film, or suggest anything that has to do with them at all??? Anyone? Im very curious about this. I think its quite gay that they have made a sequel. If you want to make a good sequel, you should try to atleast incorporate some original cast members. Jeez. I cant wait to never see this movie, but if they mention anyone in the first, I might consider it.

Gods, I loved the movie but I was really curious whom that guy who played, "Billy". The blond haired, innocent guy.

I don't know why people didn't like it, personally, I hated the first one because it looked so.. freakin' old.
