Birthday Girl (2001)

In this odd little film Nicole Kidman plays a Russian mail order bride who comes to England to be engaged to a banker in a dead end job. After a few weeks of living together without exchanging a word (contrary to her ad she does not speak English) her cousin and his friend show up take over the house and arrange to rob the bank. Aside from the odd plot Birthday Girl (2001) does not have much going for it. Kidman is enchanting and oddly believable as a young Russian girl. Ben Chaplin, who plays the morose banker, is flat and emotionless, but then again he is playing an emotionally stunted fellow. I was amused by Birthday Girl but doubt I will remember it after a couple of weeks.
