Searching for Bobby Fischer (1993)

[3 - Enjoyed it]

Would you believe me if I told you someone made an exiting movie about playing chess? No? Then you have not seen Searching for Bobby Fischer (1993). This movie has heart, depth and one heck of a kick ass checkmate kind of finale.

It's a bit too sacharine at times and a bit too white hat/black hat, like Josh versus Damion or something. But it's a nice addition to American film which so often has kids hired for no more reason than that they have big brown eyes and rosy plump cheeks. I put it among other films of the era with kids with a brain like Little Man Tate and Fresh, all three of which I like a lot. It's rare that kids aren't morons or little more than props. I think two directors are exceptional at portraying kids in movies (Truffaut and Shyamalan); here are the films I especially like:

400 Blows (Truffaut)
Wild Child (Truffaut)
Sixth Sense (Shyamalan)
Unbreakable (Shyamalan)
Signs (Shyamalan)

I've heard Malle is very good with kids, too, but I've seen few of his films and none that focused on kids. I really need to see Au Revoir les Enfents.
