Dead Alive (1992)
[1 - Pretty bad]What is worse than a ceiling crawling crack baby (Trainspotting)? Try a huge deformed brain eating Zombie Baby tossed into a quisinart.
Hypodermic needles punched into people's eyes, doors and windows being barricaded against an army of the undead, zombie mom biting the crotch of a street punk, tentacles crawling up your pant leg, a slimy uncle windmilling at zombie party guests with a cleaver in each hand, clearing your way through a zombie crowd with a lawnmower until the blood and guts are ankle deep. If this is your idea of a good date movie then Dead Alive (aka Braindead) is the flick for you. With cinematography worthy of Sam Raimi Dead Alive is a worthy watch for anyone who can take gore. And in case you had not figured it out, be sure not to eat anything before the movie.
Posted by Leopoldo at January 2, 2003 07:18 PM | TrackBackWe all enjoy a good scare once and a while, but 99.9% of all horror flicks miss out big because they lack one thing: humor. Horror takes itself too seriously. I'm not talking big laughs, but a well timed (focus on well) one-liner or a bit of slapstick can do more for a semi-conscious blood flood than say...more blood. It's what sets cult classics apart from the rest of the fray like Evil Dead. (Especially, Evil Dead) It's pure cheese and Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell knew it. Dissapointing recent films such as Ghost Ship, Fear.com, etc, do more to prove me right than anything I could say. Well, it's this guy's opinion.
Posted by: Flava on January 6, 2003 02:40 PMI totally agree. I hate horror. I love Army of Darkness. Why? Because Army of Darkness is freakin funny! It knows how to laugh at the genre, how to laugh at itself and how to laugh in general. This was the saving grace for Dead Alive for me, the movie did have a good sense of humor. I do have a weak stomach for mulched body parts though.
Posted by: Leopoldo on January 6, 2003 02:56 PMOkay, not an endorsement, but for those of you out there who want to know if it is worth it: Yes, buy Bruce Campbell's book. It's an easy two day read (or a week for slow readers) and provides some cool insights about the man who is more than the sum of "Evil Dead". I mean, the guy won't sign autographs (outside of conventions) cause he feels like my signiture isn't any less important than his. All the success life can offer, Bruce, and all the cheese.
