A trailer for the new I, Robot movie has finally been released and it looks rather impressive. How true they stay to Asimov’s book remains to be seen. You can download a QuickTime of the trailer from Dark Horizons: Trailers

Man, there are a lot of movies about andraids and robots these days. I thought we were supposed to actually have them by now. I want to pay the $9 to see a real, actual android. I’d even buy popcorn

I don’t know about this one. In some scenes it seems to have a look consistent with Proyas’ previous films, but then Will Smith starts spouting off dialogue that seems to be left over from “Bad Boys” or “Independence Day”. I guess the studio decided not to go with the magnificent adaptation that Harlan Ellison wrote many years ago, one so good that a book of the screenplay was actually published even though the film wasn’t produced. Oh well.

They dumbed-down the “Three Laws of Robotics”, and the Third Law sounds downright menacing. That’s one strike against the movie.
Will Smith is doing the same “streetwise, smart-mouthed black cop” bit that every young black actor has to play, probably by contractual obligation. That’s another strike against the movie.
The trailer features scenes of masses of robots leaping about and throwing humans through walls. That’s another strike against the movie.
The Lije Bailey novels are strongly plot-oriented, and might make better movies than the short-story collection I, ROBOT.
