Good Bye, Lenin! Trailer

good-bye-lenin.poster.jpg

I just got a view at the trailer for the German movie Good bye, Lenin! (2003) and am very intrigued. The movie centers around a young man living in East Berlin who’s mother falls into a heart attack induced comma right before the wall comes down and wakes some months later. The doctors are afraid a shock or excitement might force another heart attack forcing the son to create an intricate deception to keep his mother from learning about the changes her hometown has undergone. If the trailer is true to the movie this could be an enchanting piece!

My Dog Skip (2000)

mydogskip.jpg

Even though I much prefer the satirical “I will never forget that crazy summer” delivered by Christina Ricci in Film Roar: The Opposite of Sex (1998) to the heartfelt reminiscences delivered in kid-meets-the-world flicks like A Christmas Story (1983) and Stand by Me (1986), I cant deny the charm and intelligence of the coming of age tale in My Dog Skip (2000). I think I was curious to see it mostly because of the praise young actor Frankie Muniz (of “Malcolm in the Middle” (2000) fame) had received. Luke Wilson, Diane Lane (I) and Kevin Bacon (who with 52 titles under his belt I am glad to see is still acting) do a good job backing Muniz up, but the kid and the dog really do steal the show. Lets hope that Muniz escapes the drug and money craze that seems to sink most child-stars and that between now and then he gives us a few more performances like this one. I feel that I have filled my cute-kid quota for the year, but do recommend My Dog Skip to anyone looking for a family movie that both the kids and adults can enjoy

No More Star Trek For Stewart and Bambi II

patrick_stewart_headshot.jpg

I learned two odd things today while reading a short article on SyFy Portal based on an interview with Patrick Stewart. The first bit should really not be much of a surprise is that after the box office failure of Film Roar: Star Trek: Nemesis (2002) Stewart states he is not interested in reprising his role as Captain Picard should another Star Trek movie be made. The second bit tossed in at the end of the article made me do a double take as I read that Stewart will be doing voice work on a sequel to the Disney movie Bambi (1942). Bambi II coming to a theater near you? I mean really, wasn’t Bambi Meets Godzilla (1969) the definitive reprise of the doe-faced hero?

Monster’s Ball (2001)

I had read critical praise for the Billy Bob Thornton / Halle Berry drama Monster’s Ball (2001) but did not make any effort to see it because the story did not seem very interesting. When I saw a copy sitting at my local library I decided to give it a try, and was quite glad that I did. The story is pretty much as the reviews state it: A racist prison guard falls in love with the (black) wife of a man he has executed shortly after his son commits suicide. What makes the movie interesting is not the story but the characters in the story. Both Thornton and Berry are in top form and nail their characters. There are scenes of deep release as well as desperately withheld and repressed emotion that show off the talent of the actors as well as director Marc Forster. Monster’s Ball is a movie about people dealing with loss and pain, and as such can be a bit painful to watch so don’t rent a copy if you want a feel good evening. I do recommend it though to anyone interested in good acting backed by a good script.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Trailer

A trailer for the upcoming movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) gives us the first view of the latest from the brilliant and twisted mind of screenwriter Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich (1999), Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2002), Adaptation. (2002)). In the new movie In the new movie Jim Carrey plays a man that hires an agency to erase his memory of falling in love with his girlfriend played by Kate Winslet. The movie also stars Kirsten Dunst, Tom Wilkinson, Elijah Wood, and Mark Ruffalo.

Risky Business (1983)

I have seen the scene of Tom Cruise dancing in his tighty-whitties and heard people refer to Risky Business (1983) in conversations about 80s films enough times that I decided I had to find out what all the buzz was about. I was disappointed to find not much more in Risky Business than an odd story about a rich kid trying to deal with a prostitute (played by Rebecca De Mornay) who will not leave his house. The movie has charm, or rather Cruise and De Mornay have charm making it an amusing flick.. but surely not worth talking about twenty years later.
