Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow Pictures and Trailer
December 25th, 2003 at 9:27 am (Movie News)
I just got my first glimpse at the upcoming movie Sky Captain and The World of Tomorrow (2004) from the trailer and am rather taken by the distinctive look of the piece. The movie is set in 1939 with Sky Captain (played by Jude Law) saving America from giant robots created by a mad scientist bent on world domination. The film also stars Gwyneth Paltrow as the intrepid reporter, Angelina Jolie as Captain Franky Cook and Ling Bai as “The Mysterious Woman”. Sky Captain is the movie that made some waves around FX circles when it was announced as the first project that would exercise first time writer / director Kerry Conran’s unique CGI program that allows the movie be shot almost entirely against blue screen with sets added in post production. I don’t know if this movie will be any good but I do know that I like movies with a look and style of their own, so I will be keeping an eye on this one (plus it is about time we had more mad scientist made giant fighting robots).
Here are some screen captures from the trailer for you to enjoy:

Updated 4/23. I am adding 3 more pictures that were sent to me and compliment the set:

A distinctive looking film. I saw the trailer for this at the same time i saw the trailer for The Chronicles of Riddick ( Essentially Pitch Black 2 for thos that dont know what i’m on about ) on the Apple site.
It has a most interesting look and feel to it in the trailer. Having enjoyed alot of B-movie or similar in the past this should be wuite interesting to see how it turns out.
And i suppose in thend if it’s pretty bad i can always do the MST3K routine to it heh.
P.S. Merry Christmas to you all.

The director has obviously studied the Superman cartoons that the Max Fleischer studios put out in the early 40’s. The look of “Sky Captain” seems to be very influenced by those films, not to mention the serials of old. Let’s hope that there is a story that matches the imagination of the design, unlike the disappoinments of “Dick Tracy” or “The Rocketeer”, which leapt into my head as I watched this trailer.

Great. Googley. Moogley.
Could it be? Could it really, truly be? Is Hollywood really beginning to make movies that are geared to my demographic? Because via Lileks I see that a film called Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow is coming out,

The look of this film will be the key to weather people will go see it or not. But the story? Well, we all know that in the past we have seen many trailers that looked great, but the movie fell short. Let us hope this is not the case with “Sky Captain” because I believe it has a mind blowing look that captures the imagination, and if it has a great, solid story to match, I assume this film will do well at the Box Office. On another note, I thought Dick Tracy was very well done, and the Rocketeer is one of my favorate films. Let’s see what Hollywood has for us next…

I agree with John that the director is obviously a fan of the old Fleischer Superman cartoons as am I. I have to admitt that I’m a little bothered by the fact that he lifted what appears to be the
exact design for the flying robots that Fleischer used in “The Mechanical Monsters”, one of the Superman episodes I have on my Fleischer
Superman DVD. Still, I’m very exited about the film. I too enjoyed the Rocketeer. It’s a shame that that movie didn’t do well enough at the box
office to warrant a sequel. The sequel would have had the advantage of not needing to put so much time in introducing the characters and putting more time into more action. I love retro thirties/ forties sci-fi adventure. I’m still hoping someone will do whatever it takes to make a good film version of the thirties-forties pulp adventures of Doc Savage. I vote Jude Law for that role as well, providing he put on some muscle.

I think it looks great. It also reminds me of a character in my youth in a comic called Eagle. He was Dane Dare Space Pilot of the Future which I wish someone (British hopefully) would also make into a movie.I know George Lucas copied the Mekon’s flying seat that Yoda rode in that terrible last Star Wars movie. Boy were they both crap those last two movies.

There is some good information on Sky Captain including a description of footage, the question of whether this may become a new serial and links to external articles at: Dark Horizons: “Sky Captain” Soars Online (Feb 3rd, 2004)

Just like the others,as soon as I seen this trailer I got thrust back into Kindergarten when I first saw “The Mechanical Monsters” .When they landed I couldnt beleive it,I was expecting superman to fly in and save the day .Not sure how I take that but it might still be a good movie but knowing its not original is going to bother me

Finally, a good movie on the line! My officially stand on this shall forever be that the creators watched Metropolis while on crack, but that’s is not a bad thing! Wow! I’ll most definetly be the first in line for this one, you can bet. Beautiful P-40, giant robots, flapping Horton bombers… Oh, man. I think I need some prozac. *chuckles*

Sky Captain is such a blantant ripoff of the computer flight simulation “Crimson Skies” that just cannot be ignored. It also rips off the b&w film scene we saw in the “Rocketeer” where the nazis in helmets were wearing rocket packs and flying over N.Y. in the scene where Howard Hughes show the b&w film. Another “Terry and the Pirates” and “Tales of the Gold Monkey” genre set in Indiana Jones era. Just hope Crimson Skies and the Rocketeer get their credit for the ripoff. Still going to see it though. Hope it does well. Guess the 1930’s/40’s serials still live on? Remember “Blackhawk”?

Hey Bill,
Where did you think that Crimson Skies and Rocketeer got their ideas from? Do you really think that they were original? Sky Captain is inspired by the same pulp material that they were. This movie was actually in the works before Crimson Skies was around.

Hey Dex.
Crimson Skies is older than you think it is. It originally started as a FASA Board game.

Take a look at Miyazaki’s movie “Castle in the Sky” for a primary source (his movie “Spirited Away” won the best animated Oscar in 2002)as well as Crimson Skies. The flying robots are dead on. But then, if you’re going to copy, you might as well copy from the best, which Miyazaki is.

If you like the look of this, you should watch The Shadow, with Alex Baldwin and Penelope Ann Miller. It had the art deco vibe and I don’t care if it didn’t collect critical acclaim, I REALLY liked it and all the sets and costumes were from the 30’s or 40’s and were true to the period. This movie, Sky Captain, also looks GREAT!

I am very angry at this film because i love crimson skies and it gets no credit from this RIP-OFF movie!

The film looks good, Dex don’t you know that crimson skies has been around for like ten years, Jude Law wasn’t even famous then. have you ever heard of the crimson pig? its an old anime about dogfights, ’skies’pigs and now the ultimate version of the story. on the main website i saw the inspiration for the characters and it was aload of rubbiush. they stole the characters from crimson skies. i feel angry the movie better be good!
