The uniforms worn in the Star Trek TNG series changed a few times. In keeping with the original Star Trek series the first few episodes of season 1 show crew walking around wearing skirt style uniforms. Two things stand out during the first few episodes of the first series that unfortunately disappeared pretty quickly: men wearing skirts and ensign redhead. The male crew members in skirt style uniforms was a wonderful departure from the norm and one that showed TNG had the guts to be innovative. Unfortunately the skirt uniforms random crew walking around in the background disappeared after just a couple of episodes. Even more unfortunate was the disappearance of one particular extra that could be seen in the background for just a few of the original episodes. She was gorgeous and had this long red hair that gave a great contrast to the stale future environment of the Enterprise. I wish I could find a picture of her to share, some people remember her, and some do not. Among my friends she was always known as ‘ensign redhead’.

Proving once again that sophomoric humor can be entertaining, Mel Brooks casts himself not only in the lead role, but as 5 of the leading characters as he pokes fun at slavery, the Spanish Inquisition, the French Revolution, Adolph Hitler and of course himself in History of the World: Part I (1981). Full of bawdy jokes and toilet humor this barely connected set of vignettes feels more like a vehicle to put to film all those little jokes that Brooks saved up but did not manage to sneak into his other movies. What is amazing about this movie is that it works. At least, it does if all you are looking for is a bunch of well-executed cheap jokes.

A must have for Matrix fans, The Animatrix (2003) is a collection of nine animated shorts by some of Japan’s top anime artists. Some segments are better than others and some more important to understanding the Matrix Universe. I believe the nine segments each deserve their own short review:

Keeping the sexy edge of Next Generation running TNG Code of Honor has some hot girl on girl action for the fourth episode. Sure the fighting looked fake, but the plot idea was pretty good and it showed the TNG writers were willing to think out of the box. For some reason this episode feels like it belongs more in the original Star Trek.

I will be on vacation for the next two weeks, so the Film Roar and Lion’s Den blogs will be on a two-week hiatus. I usually keep a travel log, if you are interested check The Lion’s Den for updates. Whether the travel log is posted while I am there or when I return will depend on my access to an internet connection while away from home.
