The Last Samurai Trailer

I had not thought much of the upcoming movie The Last Samurai (2003) until I saw the trailer today. This could be good.

Madonna Sweeps Razzie Awards

Madonna and hubby Guy Ritchie’s cinematographic fiasco Swept Away (2002) took a full five Razzie Awards this year with Worst Picture, Actress, Screen Couple, Director and worst Remake or Sequel for 2002. Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clowns … err.. I mean Clones (2002) was granted Worst Supporting Actor for Hayden Christensen’s ‘acting’ as well as Worst Screenplay.

X2 (2003)

x2_poster.jpg

Ah, it is fun to find a good popcorn flick you can just sit back and enjoy from time to time. There is not much of anything to think about, ponder, or worry about as you watch the action extravaganza of X2 (2003). What there is, is a lot of ass-kicking fun to be had. Keeping in the spirit of the film I think I should write this one in brief, short sentences (If I could only get some special effects to cut from one sentence to the next):

*SPOILER WARNING* I WILL be giving some surprises about X-Men 2 so, if you have not seen the movie STOP HERE. You have been warned. *SPOILER WARNING*

Angel Fifth Season

angel_buffy.jpg

I don’t watch Angel but know a couple of geeks who do.. so this news is for you Michael and Sven:
From Dark Horizons

Angel (TV): Good and bad news for fans of the Joss Whedon Buffy spin-off series as the fate of the show is finally revealed just after the airing of the fourth season finale which took the show in a whole new direction. Lets start with the good - Variety reports that “Angel” has indeed been renewed for a full fifth season with the new regular cast addition of James Marsters (Spike on “Buffy”). Also some of the best scribes from “Buffy” have come onboard back at the WB to help kick off the fifth season, as will other characters from Sunnydale who’ll put in appearances (who and what capacity is unsure right now). The downside? Cordelia herself Charisma Carpenter is not expected to return as a series regular. The network will announce its Fall TV slate tomorrow.

Bonnie and Clyde (1967)

bonnie.and.clyde.jpg
Starring Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway and a Gene Hackman so young you can hardly recognize him Bonnie and Clyde (1967) has that special quality of 60’s films that I find particularly annoying. I have never fully figured out exactly what it is about these movies. The dialog is written to emulate natural speech, people are uncomfortable the way they would be (should be?) in real life, and the movies in this genre have this incredibly annoying tendency to unapologetically start and end with no ramp up, ramp down, explanation or conclusion. I do not know what the name of this genre is, or what its identifying characteristics are. If I can figure that out I may learn why I find it so annoying and have an easier time staying away from it.

Lacenaire [The Elegant Criminal] (1990)

elegant.criminal.jpg
Set in the early 1800s Lacenaire (1990) tells the story of a well educated and gentlemanly criminal on his way to the Guillotine for murder. Flashbacks are recounted by the editor and publisher of his biography to his childhood thieving, getting in trouble as a school kid, his military days, and various affairs. Daniel Auteuil gives a great performance reminiscent of his role in Reine Margot, La (1994). At the end of the film, however, the viewer is left with that feeling that French cinema is so adept at creating of ’so, why do I care?’
