Reign of Fire (2002) delivers exactly what it promises: fast action, testosterone-laden automatic weapons fire and very convincing CG dragons. If you think you might like to see this movie I recommend that you watch the trailer. If you think you would be happy to extend the trailer for about another eighty minutes, then this is a good movie for you. If you are hoping to find something new or more interesting, then prepare to be disappointed.

Two hours after leavingt he theater I am still recuperating from the impact of watching Pedro Almodovar’s latest Hable con ella [Talk to Her] (2002). The expertly made movie is not so much disturbing as it is touching. There is an honesty to the despair and desperation of the characters that is rare to see in cinema these days.

At times beautiful, at times boring Powaqqatsi (1988) is not as engaging as it’s sister film Koyaanisqatsi (1983) and definitely not as impacting as it’s cousin Baraka (1992). I was tempted to call Powaqqatsi the weak spot in the ‘qatsi’ trilogy but realized I cannot yet make that claim since I have not had a chance to see the last chapter in the series, Naqoyqatsi (2002).

I have been watching Star Trek TNG on DVD. Half way through season four is the episode called “The Game” a.k.a. “The Tetris Episode.” In this episode, Wesley Crusher discovers that a highly addictive game everyone is playing acts as a psychotropic drug. I distinctly remember seeing this episode when it first aired (and when Tetris was the drug of choice at my college). It was during that episode that I coined with the term JGFG. At the end of the episode Wesley and his new girlfriend Robin walk out of her quarters, each with a grin that screams “I just got laid.” When describing the moment to a friend, the natural term to use was a “JGFG”? What is a JGFG? Why that would be a Just Got Fucked Grin

The Internet Movie Database allows users to rate movies. The ratings are generally pretty bad with the masses voting high for movies with lots of ‘if you don’t love this you are a fool’ advertising and low for movies that are beyond the range of your average American Viewer. The list of top 100 movies is pretty bogus, but the list of their bottom 100 films seems pretty accurate.

A good set of actors working with a decent script, Things to Do in Denver When You’re Dead (1995) is a violent movie about five hardcore gangsters who botch a job and are tagged to be knocked off. Buckwheat, they call it, death in the most painful way. Christopher Walken, Andy Garcia, Bill Nunn, Steve Buscemi and the rest give it their all in a series of disturbing scenes of ultra-violence. Things to Do is no masterpiece, but it is worth watching — just be sure you do so on a steady stomach.
