Donnie Darko (2001)

Dark, mysterious, haunting, and disturbing; such is the world of Donnie Darko (2001). Darko is a sixteen-year-old with a large, nightmarish bunny named Frank as his friend. Frank tells Donnie that the world will end in thirty days, then directs Donnie to increasingly destructive and creative works of violence. As Donnie finds the clues to time travel that suggests Frank may be right, the audience finds itself hoping that Donnie is, in fact, insane. It is either that or accept the horror of Frank.

Baraka (1992)

Magical and enchanting, Baraka is unique in being the only movie I can think of that consistently brings me a smile and a tear. The cinematography in Baraka is so exquisite that I make it a point to attend a screening whenever it is shown on the big screen.

Soldier of Orange (1977)

Co-written and directed by Paul Verhoeven, Soldaat van Oranje [Soldier of Orange] (1977) follows a Dutch aristocrat (Rutger Hauer) as he deals with love and loyalty during the German occupation of World War II.

The characters are interesting and well developed. I read a latent homosexual tension among the fraternity students in the core cast that may have been nothing more than a misreading of different cultural customs. I was also left wondering how much of the movie was lost to me due to mistranslation of the Dutch or cultural ignorance. If you ever wanted a movie about resistance fighters in Holland during WW II, this is the movie for you. Otherwise I would recommend you skip Soldier of Orange and keep browsing the video store.
