The Geek Hierarchy and Animators

Sunday night I had dinner with my friend Teresa, the most excellent animator who worked on (amongst others) Chicken Run. Teresa had a copy of the Geek Hierarchy to share with me. We got to talking about how animators fit on the chart and figured that two more tracks should be added to look something like this:

Stop Motion Animators
|
Puppeteers
|
Muppetteers
|
Marionettists

And:

Horror Movie Fans
|
People who know the names
of prosthetic artists from
horror movies
|
People who make their
own prosthetics

Ouch, I fall under a lot of categories on the flow chart. Oh, well, it means I am a well rounded geek. Funny list. BTW, let Teresa know Chicken Run was an excellent film! HEY! That reminds me, we aren’t discussing any animated films on here. What’s up with that?!?!?! Claymation, computer animation/cel animation, you know, whatever you might want to discuss. I think mostly a lot of animation (I will use the word animation to denote any type of frame by frame filmed medium) is either considered “just for kids” or great in special effects, but lacking in plot. Sadly, most of this is true. Chicken Run was an exception, though, and was appropriately slanted towards adults in many respects.

…Plus I had an undeniable attraction to Ginger.

Rest assured reviews of animated movies (I am posting movie reviews as I watch them) as well as discussion on animation is to come. I do not know if you knew but I worked at Will Vinton Studios for five years and before that shot some stop motion animation in college. One of the things I did at WVS was hunt for people using the word ‘Claymation’ online without attributing it to the company. The word is a copyright of Will Vinton Studios… so you will see me use ‘Stop Motion Animation’ instead.
