Enterprise: In search of Writers

It seems clear to me that the Star Trek Enterprise writers have a message they want to deliver, and the message is “Please Hire some writers!”
Did anyone watch that latest piece of cinematographic crap by Madonna? You know, Swept Away? And if you did would you admit it? Well what do you think could possibly be worse than admitting responsibility for that piece of crap? How about imitating it? Badly.
Today’s episode of Enterprise, Precious Cargo, has Trip crash land on a deserted planet with a spoiled princess who is obnoxious and bossy up until the point where she falls for him. Well, that might be giving the plot of this episode too much depth. Not only is the story sadly lacking, but the writing is inane as well.
What is going wrong? This show had promise, a promise that is being lost on writing so crude it is hard to sit through. The episode before this one (T’Pol tells the tale of how her grandmother crash landed on Earth) was enjoyable. Not necessarily good, but not at all bad. But the previous one? Wow, you think they would want to hire writers for this show!

This is why after DS9, I stopped watching. It perserved the good memories.

You know this actually became a problem for me.. you see I never intended to become a trekkie (or a trekker as the case may be) but alas I got into it and I did. I have the pleasure of saying with confidence that I have seen each and every episode of Star Trek Next Gen at least once and now that I am going through the series again on DVD that will soon be up to at least twice. I watched DS9 faithfully during its first season, then less faithfully, and eventually stopped watching at all. By the time the Dominion War was going on I was tuned out leaving me with a significant gap of knowledge.
I watched most of Star Trek Voyeur… err.. I mean Voyager and have seen most of Enterprise (though at times grumblingly) so my view of the universe is mostly complete.. and yet this gap remains that comes up from time to time as I miss some cultural geek reference in conversation.. it is really rather quite unnerving.

Archer’s good, T’Pol’s good, but why, why, WHY did the writers have to go and put stupid Risa in the series? (Ugh, I hate that planet. i bet Risa was invented by Brannon Braga…)
